This Artist Puts Food Scraps to Work in Beautiful Images

By

Thrift is admirable. Creativity can inspire. And sometimes, when you combine the two, magic happens.

Take, for example, the work of Lauren Purnell, a food artist and photographer, who uses her ingenuity to transform kitchen scraps into beautiful art. Purnell can turn eggplant leftovers and parsley into a charming bamboo-chomping panda. She can combine mushroom, sweet potato and chives to summon forth a pretty spring robin perched in grass. In her hands, slices of blood orange, parsley, melon and berries become a lovely bicycle, with a bright yellow seat and a basket of festive flowers hanging from its handlebars.

Purnell regularly posts her graceful designs, which pop with color against the clean white plates she uses as a background, on her Instagram page and blog.

She writes that she enjoys sharing her “love and appreciation for food through ‘Food Art,’ ” explaining, “it’s art made out of fresh and healthy food which I call ‘Culinary Canvases.’”

A feast for the eyes!
