Soon, You'll Be Able to Send Your Friends a Sandwich Emoji

Also a coconut, a broccoli and a slab of steak.

One day, not long from now, we’ll look back on these days as a primitive era when we couldn’t text someone an emoji of a sandwich on our iPhones whenever the sandwich-y mood struck us.

That will change later this year, when Apple releases its new sandwich emoji as one of 56 new emoji characters that will be made available for iOS, macOS and watchOS devices.

The company recently offered a preview of several forthcoming emoji, to be officially released as part of Unicode 10.0 by the end of 2017. The wholesome-looking sandwich — white bread, lettuce, cheese, tomato, and some kind of pinkish lunchmeat, in case you are curious or hungry — was among them.

So was a rugged, split-open coconut. I guess because sometimes you feel like a nut?

Other food-related emoji due for release, possibly as part of the launch of iOS11 and the new iPhone 8 in the fall, include broccoli, a slab of raw steak, a twisty salted pretzel and canned food. There’s also a bowl with a spoon, a cup with a straw, a takeout box and chopsticks, as well as a dumpling, a fortune cookie and pie.

The Unicode Consortium, the governing body that approves a standard set of emoji every year, announced the list of approved emojis for 2017 in June. Those emoji are then translated by platform, such as Apple, Twitter, Facebook and Google.

In honor of World Emoji Day on July 17 (yes, there apparently is such a thing), Apple also gave a sneak peek at a few other emoji coming soon to its devices — including a zombie, a zebra, an elf, a breastfeeding woman, a woman with a headscarf, a bearded guy, a (cute, but controversial) T-rex, and a blown mind.

I’d probably use that last one right now, if I had it.
