Go Nuts for These Unusual Doughnuts

Doughnut fans who have been feeling an unmistakable, unshakable sense of ennui as they survey the usual offerings — your run-of-the-mill glazed, iced, powdered or fruit-filled (yawn) — will be relieved to hear that several big-name breakfast-pastry purveyors are mixing things up this summer on the fried-dough front.

IHOP has seen fit to create a French toast/doughnut hybrid it is calling (naturally) French Toasted Donuts. The a.m.-meal mashup, which is basically doughnuts coated with vanilla batter and then, by all accounts, “griddled,” were introduced in July and will be featured on the IHOP menu through September 24. So you’ll be able to go nuts for the unusual doughnuts for a limited time only.

A follow-up to IHOP’s past boundary-pushing French toast experimentation (see here and here), the frankendoughnuts come in three different varieties: Apple Fritter French Toasted Donut (“a warm apple fritter dipped in vanilla batter, French Toasted, and topped with cinnamon apples, powdered sugar and whipped topping”), Bacon & Maple French Toasted Donut (a “sweet, savory … donut dipped in … signature vanilla batter, French Toasted, and topped with maple glaze and hickory smoked bacon”) and Strawberries & Cream French Toasted Donut (“a Bavarian cream-filled donut, dipped in our signature vanilla batter, French Toasted, and topped with glazed strawberries and powdered sugar”).

Oh, the sweetness.

Meanwhile, over at Krispy Kreme, those looking for an unusual doughnut can sink their teeth into a Reese’s Peanut Butter Doughnut. The limited-time choco-peanut-butter offering features a Reese’s Peanut Butter Kreme-filled doughnut that has milk chocolate icing on top and then — on top of that — a mix of Reese’s Peanut Butter Chips and chopped peanuts and — on top of that — chocolate and peanut butter drizzles.

Not that there’s anything wrong with an Original Glazed or anything.

Oh and Dunkin’ loyalists, don’t feel left out. The ubiquitous doughnut shop has introduced its own decadent food-mashup options this summer as well. S’mores Donut or Chocolate Drizzled Strawberry Croissant Donut, anyone?
