Cake Decorating--Basket-Weave

PHOTO
To decorate a cake with a basket-weave pattern, first make a double batch of buttercream. Then skim-coat the cake with a smooth base layer.
PHOTO
Choose either a plain or serrated flat tip. Here we have fitted the bag with a serrated tip and filled it with buttercream.

Pipe a vertical line straight down the side.
PHOTO
Then pipe short horizontal lines of equal length across this line. Leave spaces equal to the width of the lines themselves.
PHOTO
Now pipe a second vertical line that just overlaps the short, horizontal lines. Pipe horizontal lines over this, as before. These lines alternate with the horizontal ones from the previous column and fill the spaces between them.

Continue all the way around the cake. You may decorate the top in the same fashion.

Pipe any border you choose to hide the seam.
