It makes sense that most residents of California, where so much of the country's fresh produce is grown, are obsessed with fresh ingredients. From north to south, the pleasant climate and long growing season encourage a light, summery approach to cooking, especially when tomatoes, avocados, citrus, herbs and lettuces are growing on doorsteps practically year-round. Whether you're exploring one of many farmers' markets, discovering wine country, or sampling authentic cuisine from Asia, Mexico and beyond, California is sure to tantalize your tastebuds.

1. Visit local farmers' markets for a great selection of produce, much of which is often organic.
2. Sonoma and Napa are the best known regions of wine country, although Mendocino, Santa Barbara, and areas of the Central Valley produce great wines as well.
3. Tables at well-known restaurants, especially in Napa Valley, are often fully reserved for months. Make reservations as early as possible.
