Located at the southern extremity of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, Greece is home to sun, sea, and fresh food. Due to mild weather, delicious vegetables and aromatic herbs are abundant -- and play the starring role in many dishes. Many meals also lean toward the healthy side, finding substance in legumes and grains rather than meat and eggs, although rich desserts such as baklava, made with pastry, honey, and nuts, reign.

1. In restaurants the service charge is included, but most people leave a small tip by rounding up the bill.

2. Cheap snacks include souvlaki (skewered, grilled meat in pita bread) and spanakopita (spinach and cheese pie).

3. Greek yoghurt, much thicker than other types, is delicious and sold everywhere.

4. Ouzo, a sweet anise-flavored liqueur, is usually served as an aperitif.
