Florence, ItalyJust beyond the hordes of tourists in Piazza Santa Croce lies a secluded culinary gem. Without a sign on the front door, La Giostra is (perhaps intentionally) difficult to find. However, once you do find your way to Borgo Pinti, just beyond the San Piero arch, you can look forward to an unforgettably romantic dining experience.
Guests are welcomed with a sparkling glass of spumanti from chef/owner Dimitri Kunz dAsburgo Lorena, a Hapsburg prince, and his twin sons, Soldano and Dimitri. From there, among the low-arched ceiling and twinkling candles, the dining experience begins with a menu rich in the flavors of Tuscany. Favorite dishes include Carbonara di Tartufi Binachi, a rich pasta with white truffles, Ravioli di Brie con Carciofini Morelli, a homemade Brie-stuffed ravioli with fried artichokes and Spinata alle Erbe Aromatiche di Maremma, a dish of thinly sliced beef topped with fresh herbs.
While it may be off the beaten path, La Giostra is popular with Florentines and the lucky visitors who are in the know. Reservations are recommended.
