Their growing reputation for tasting great as well as being packed with nutrition is giving these tasty root vegetables a major surge in popularity. Mashed, baked, or pureed into a soup or a pie, sweet potatoes make beautiful side dishes or desserts. Sweet potatoes and the much larger and more savory yams are actually different vegetables, but the name is often used interchangeably. Ask your grocer if you're unsure, but true yams are fairly uncommon in the US. Avoid sweet potatoes which look shriveled or have black spots and store them in a cool, dry place.
