Put your architectural and landscaping skills to the test by building your own gingerbread house. If you don’t know where to start, we’ve provided a basic recipe, template and tips for making your house the best on the block.

Ideas and Tips

  • Shingle the roof with cereal wheat squares, wafer cookies or nonpareils.

  • Use colored candies to make a cobblestone walkway. Use frosting to glue the candy into a path that leads up to the house.

  • Make shutters with sections of graham crackers.

  • Sprinkle shredded coconut around the house to create snow.

  • Mirrors and aluminum foil make excellent streams and skating ponds.

  • Fashion chocolate licorice into fences.

  • Stack large marshmallows to create snowmen.

  • Top a candy cane with a gumdrop to make a street lamp.
