A Perfect Setting: Rachael Ray

Fun & Festive
On 30 Minute Meals, Rachael Ray whips up her quick and easy dishes in a colorful kitchen with vintage accents. For a holiday table inspired by the queen of quick, Food Network design director Wendy Waxman incorporated a similar mix of fun and functional pieces.

Wendy's Design Tips
1 Wendy opted for a bright red color for the surface of Rachael's actual tabletop. To achieve this look, she went to the Nemo Tile Company and bought 1' by 1' sheets of red penny tile ($8.95 per sheet), and then had them professionally mounted. It is possible to make a similar tabletop yourself using plywood and white grout (both of which can be purchased at your local home improvement store), but Wendy warns that it will be time consuming.
2 Rachael likes to use a lot of metal and plastic trays, but Wendy spiced things up by using Ditte Fischerlok porcelain plates from Clio that are made in the shape of trays.
3 Wendy's a pro at scouring her favorite New York City flea markets for interesting pieces to incorporate in her designs. Here's what she found for Rachael's tabletops at her favorite flea markets:
   Vintage white and red striped napkins
   Red silverware with metal studs from Thailand
   Retro red Pyrex refrigerator jar that she used as a flower container to hold green Spider Mums
   Vintage milk glass salt and pepper
   Green and white striped Vaseline glass
   A vintage piece of Catherine Holmes cookware that doubled as a vase
4 Rachael always likes to have nuts or pieces of shrimp in tall glasses with stems. Wendy used a type of retro glass that's called Manhattan glass - they always have the ribbed edges. Sometimes you can find these reproduced in stores. Wendy found hers and the two little gravy boats which can be used for sauces at Mood Indigo.
5 The shot glasses Wendy used could hold alcohol, or to be more like Rachael, she advises sticking in a shrimp or something savory.
6 Square shaped wine glasses are clean and modern, perfect for wine or even ice cream and fruit sauce -- or both. (Terence Conran Shop, 407 E. 59th St., NY, NY, 212-755-9079.)
7 Wendy used a big tray that you'd normally put fish or olives in to hold a selection of Christmas ornaments. She opted for wool balls from a sheep farm in South Africa which added a unique touch to the table, (available at Mai Mai, 251 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY, 718-624-4620) but there are other Christmas ornaments that have a similar style in retail stores.
8 Little rectangular plates from Dean and Deluca can be used for dipping sauces.
9 Wendy found the chopsticks and the long white plate holding the ornaments at Pearl Rivermart (477 Broadway, NY, NY, 212-431-4770).
10 Wendy suggests using the Art deco sugar bowl from Mood Indigo for sugar, salt, pepper, or condiments.
