Best chocolate pie!

User: Heather from Greenwood, IN    User Rating:
This is the best chocolate pie I've ever tasted. It's really easy to make and it comes out like I have been working all day on it. It's rich, silky, and hits the spot when I have a chocolate craving. It's also a perfect dessert for holidays and family gatherings. A+ Alton!

fantastic filling

The tofu filling was beyond fantastic. It was fun making the rest of my family try and guess what was in the pie. I do think it would taste even better without a store bought crust -- I'll make my own next time.

Wonderful

I forgot the honey and my family didn't even notice. I also didn't have the coffee liquer so I used strong coffee with a bit of chocolate syrup. Just a squeeze in about 1/3 cup coffee. I was amazed at the wonderful texture and deep chocolate flavor.

This is the most incredible thing I have ever eaten

User: Kerri from Islip, NY    User Rating:
I have never rated a recipe before now, but this recipe was just so incredible that I just couldn't help myself. I did not use the liquor. When I added the vanilla the chocolate seized up, and I was fearful that I'd ruined it. But I put it directly into the blender with the tofu and it came out as smooth as can be. The longer you let this refrigerate, the better!

I made this pie over the weekend and it was so delicious! The texture is fantastic! I gave my mom a piece and she was in love with it, then I told her she was eating tofu, she was stunned. I don't drink alcohol so I used just a bit of strong coffee and chocolate syrup (together 1/3 c worth) in place of the coffee liquer. Next time I think I'll use milk chocolate chips and only chocolate syrup. It was a little bitter for some of my guests, though just right for my tastes (I'm a dark chocolate person). Fantastic!

Wowza good
04/17/2007 at 04:46pm
User: NANCY from Hanover Park, IL    User Rating:
I didn't have coffee liqueur in the house, but I did have Cointreau (orange liqueur) and I used that (since I adore chocolate-orange). And I just poured it in a bowl to scoop like mousse. Wowza, so good. Once set in the refrigerator the texture is so nice and firm you could scoop it beautifully if you want. I used a very cheap tetra-pack box of silken tofu off the shelf in the asian section (not refrigerated) and that worked great. I did drain the excess liquid. This recipe is a bit nicer than Ellie Krieger's Dark Chocolate Mousse (and without the crust, very similar), well at least with Cointreau. And it was easier too, and this is entirely dairy free.

Best ever!

This is the best chocolate pie I've ever had. Texture, consistency, taste, everything is amazing about this pie. I added good quality dark rum instead of coffee liquor (didn't have any handy) and I also added some roasted sliced almonds to the mixture and it came out great.

I take this to potlucks all the time and have gotten people to eat this who refuse to eat tofu. (Of course I tell them after the fact.) I have even been told that if it wasn't so good, my life would be in danger for feeding them tofu. It is very rich, but oh so good.

AMAZING Chocolate Pie!

Too boozy
03/03/2007 at 08:41pm
User: `D from Alexandria, VA    User Rating:
First the good....loved the texture. Very silky, and it couldn't be easier. But I felt that 1/3 cup (5 Tbs) of coffee liquor made it too boozy tasting. Would cut it back to 3 Tbs and see if that helped. I also used Hershey Special Dark chocolate chips....maybe a sweeter chip would have balanced out the liquor a little better.

I love this easy, quick desert. I'm alergic to milk so there are Very few "creme" pie recipies out there. this recipe is very forgiving. We add an extra block of silken tofu to make a pudding, or I've changed out the chocolate and added peanut butter (with a few modifications can get a little tricky). AND my MILK friends love it.

Not bad
08/01/2006 at 06:03am
User: James from Deerfield, IL    User Rating:
In absolute terms, only taking taste into account, I'd rate this a 3. It's certainly not bad, but there are many better chocolate pies out there. However, when you consider that it's probably one of the healthiest pies, and that it's insanely easy to make, it becomes a recipe worth saving. Note: I made mine with semisweet chocolate chips, and personally think it might have been better with milk chocolate. And I did enjoy this one enough to take the chance testing out this theory in the near future, so we'll see

I used a really high quality baking chocolate to make this pie, along with splitting the 1/3 c. liqueur into both Chambord and Kahlua. It gave me the worst (best?) chocolate buzz of my life.

What a treat!
06/27/2006 at 11:01pm
User: JANICE from Chicago, IL    User Rating:
First, the recipe should point out that "a block of silken tofu," refers to a 12.3 oz. block. I guessed that was what it meant, not having seen the show. The pie was rich and delicious. I used a homemade graham cracker crust to contrast with the chocolate. My husband snarfed it down, liked the thick texture and was astounded to know it was tofu. Cut slim pieces: it's very rich.

I've made this several times it is sooooo good. The last time I made it I was a bit slow in getting it from the food processor to the graham cracker crust and my crust crumbled as I tried to spread the pie in the pan because it had already set up (about 5 min after mixing).

Everyone seemed to love this pie when I made it for a party a few nights ago. I, however, could taste the tofu just a bit... but again, everyone loved it. I'd like to see a crust recipe included with the filling recipe (I found one elsewhere), just to make things complete. Decorating idea: Sprinkle crushed chocolate cookie crumbs and/or drizzle melted chocolate on top. Rim the diameter of the pie with chocolate covered espresso beans. Yum!

Reminds me of cheesecake, key lime pie, mousse - all without being heavy. The pie I sampled was made with dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, and was INCREDIBLE. Each bite was decadent, but without guilt. Sensuous texture, rich taste, melts in your mouth (like M&M's never could.)

This pie is so thick and rich, it tastes like an expensive chocolate desert at a fancy restaurant. I cannot believe I put it together with choc chips, tofu, and a storebought crust. It shouldn't taste that good but it does - pure Alton Brown magic!!!!

User: Kathi from Lufkin, TX    User Rating:
I'm not certain how to rate this recipe. It was certainly easy and the pie setup nicely. I didn't have the coffee liqueur and so used Irish Cream. The chocolate siezed and I didn't care for the Irish cream taste so...I will try again with no liqueur next time or perhaps with espresso powder. Having said all that, my girlfriend loved it and couldn't believe it was dairy free and made with tofu. Also a very rich dessert and goes a long way with a little whipped cream and some chocolate sprinkles.

After watching Alton Brown make this pie, I had to try it myself. I was incredibly happy to find that it's absolutely DELICIOUS!!! Everyone I've made it for has loved it! Sometimes I don't tell them it's made of tofu to begin with becuase some people tend to shy away, but after one bite, they're sold. You can't tell it's tofu at all! So creamy and wonderful! And healthy and easy too! I highly recommend this one!!!

This pie is delicious...after about 12 hours. That's the amount of time the tofu takes to soak up the flavor of the chocolate, vanilla, and kahlua. Before that, there is a background taste of tofu that is rather unpleasant. As long as it has the time to set, this pie is great.

User: DEBBI from Richland Center, WI    User Rating:
I am a confirmed and unabashed chocoholic, and I am anti-diet by philosophy. (Not by necessity, however). I saw the Good Eats Tofu episode, and decided to give Tofu a try. This pie turns out very well. It holds its shape much better than regular chocolate pies that I have made, and don't soften up the crust when a little is left over. I exchanged the coffee flavor (which I don't care for) for almond extract. I think next time I'll try Chambord, because I put a little raspberry topping on it to sweeten it up a bit. The chocolate taste is a little dark for me, I'm a milk chocolate person myself. My husband (dark chocolate person) loved it, and was very surprised that it had tofu, and my 4 year old son LOVED IT!!! So...tofu....who knew?

User: RICHARD from Rockwall, TX    User Rating:
I decided to give this one a try given it's pseudo-healthy contents. What a winner! The filling turns out silky smooth and chocolaty. Way better than any pudding-type filling. And talk about easy, two minutes of blender time after the chocolate has melted and you're done. After a few days some moisture will leech into the crust and take away its crispness as normal with any pie but in reality this pie won't be around that long!

This is so creamy and wonderful. Is great knowing that I don't have all the extra fat in it too!!!

A great way to have chocolate!

My husband and I are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and with this recipe we will never miss the real thing. My husband was shocked when he heard that this pie was made out of tofu and wasn't a regular cheesecake. My brother-in-law who never eats anything low fat devoured most of the pie.

A treat for chocolate lovers

I added just a little shredded coconut for extra flavor and texture.

Tastes sinful!

This is a really good dessert, but it is very dense and rich. A small slice will be plenty.

Excellent All-Around Dessert

I make this for vegans & non-vegans, and it's always a hit. Sometimes I use espresso instead of the liqueur to cut down on some of the sugars. I also make my own crust out of all natural grahams or Newman's Own Organics chocolate wafer cookies, either pulsed with some canola oil in the food processor. Top with berries for a great chocolate treat. Another quick note, I have found that if I double the tofu to make more pie, I don't necessarily need to double the chocolate. Otherwise it's too chocolately, if there is such a thing!

Fantastic

I loved this recipe, and it is great for vegans. Though it's not quite as healthy once you slather it in whipped cream, my preference!

Amazing desert for vegans...

For about a year now my middle sister has been a vegan. The rest of my family, especially my mother has sacrificed alot to accomadate her with special meals and snacks. Cristina has never been all that big a chocolate fan but the moo-less pie is one of her favorite things to eat. The only problem is she has to guard it from the rest of us.
