Eggy funnel cakes?
11/24/2007 at 06:58pm
User: Michael from Peculiar, MO    User Rating:
This recipe produces as very think "batter" and, when fried, has a very strong "egg" flavor. It's a lot different than what I'm used to for a funnel cake.

Great Recipe. Instead of a cup of eggs, try putting the 4 eggs in a 1 cup measuring cup and fill the rest up with water. If the batter is chunky when you are mixing, boost the speed up a little.

Flavorless -- what a waste of 6 eggs!
04/09/2007 at 04:45pm
User: Liebe from Woodstock, MD    User Rating:
These came out flavorless -- only an eggy aftertaste, which was not at all pleasant. My teenagers won't eat them even though they've been doused with powdered sugar (the cakes not the kids). I made cream puffs with the rest of the dough since no one will eat the funnel cakes. It's a totally acceptable pate a choux recipe. But they need WAY more flavor to make funnel cakes. Yeah, Alton, we GET the whole "multi-purpose" idea, but surely you could have recommended adding more sugar, vanilla, SOMETHING for funnel cakes.

Very Dissapointed

User: Evelyn from Flint, MI    User Rating:
I was greatly disapointed with this recipe. We tried it twice because we thought we had done something wrong the first time. It was way too thick and doughy. Not anything like the ones we get at the fair. We found an Amish Funnel Cake recipe that we enjoyed much better.

What A Disappointment!!

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
The reviews of this recipe were so great for the most part, that I thought that this recipe would be a sure fire winner. WRONG!! I expected something like the funnel cakes we get at the ball park or at the state fair; this recipe wasn't even close! These were far too egg-y tasting and the texture was too much like a meringue.

Great recipe. The funnel cakes come out very light and not greasy. They did not come out as crisp as we would have likes. I am not sure if it's the recipe or how we are cooking it. (i.e. is our oil hot enough)

This is a great desert for those that love amusement park funnel cake. Children and adults alike just loved this tasty treat. The second time I made it, as an additionial topper I had both plain and chocolate whip cream and I sauted some frozen mixed berries as for a fruit topping. I love the food network.

Good, but...
07/04/2006 at 03:42pm
User: Emily from Madison, WI    User Rating:
There is not nearly enough sugar in the dough recipe. I completely agree with the previous reviewer that all the flavor comes from the sugar on top. I will make this again, but add more sugar to the dough next time. One tip: it's easiest to flip the cakes with spring loaded tongs. They don't damage them, and there's less oil sprayed around.

Trickey but worth it!!!
09/01/2005 at 05:09pm
User: Amber from San Juan, CA    User Rating:
This is an easy and awesome dessert. The trickey part comes in flipping the cake. I think when I do it again, I'll make the cakes small so they are easier to flip for a beginner. Also the tip I used on the bag wasn't big enough, so the batter had a hard time coming through. When you put the batter in the pan of hot oil you need to do it quickly in small batches to make it easier the first time. But trust me this is a great dessert.

Certainly not a "carnival-style" funnel cake...
08/28/2005 at 04:37pm
User: ANDY from Lincoln, NE    User Rating:
I agree with the previous reviewers who stated that it was too eggy. Basically, not enough puff and crispiness, and too doughy. Definitely did NOT produce the kind of funnel cake I was imagining... Also, the batter came out very thick and was difficult to pipe into a good-sized cake before the batter in the middle had set.

Out of all the recipes for funnel cakes I've tried, this one proves to be the most tedious and least flavorful, especially when you're not depending on the powdered sugar to add to the taste.

I love Alton's show, and many of his recipes, this one however is way too eggy, funnel cakes shouldn't taste like a fried egg. I read Gale Gands recipe, will try that one, it includes ingredients that will cut that egg taste.

Too Egg-y
03/06/2005 at 01:09pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
Sorry Alton, I love your show, but when I made the funnel cakes they came out way too egg-y. 4 whole eggs and 2 egg whites are a lot of eggs, so it's no surprise really. Next time I think I'll try cutting the egg quantity in half.

Perhaps Too Good

This was perhaps the best funnel cake I've ever eaten. The batter fried up light, and not at all greasy. It might actually be too good in that it's so easy, and requires no odd ingredients (i.e. it's possilbe to make this at a moments notice).

This recipie is so simple and it tases great. I like to make it on either a Saturday or Sunday morning as a breakfast treat by topping it with strawberry jam and powdered sugar or for a dessert treat by topping it with melted chocolate chips and sometimes a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's a very versatile treat and can be "personalized" to fit anybody's tastes.
