I followed Ina's instructions to the letter and the cake came out unbelievably good!! Nothing but raves, and orders to make more. The only thing I would do differently is increase the amount of cream to make more filling. I will make this again and again!

This recipe is excellent!!! My whole family loves this recipe. Every one comes back for seconds! It was not the easiest recipe, but it was not too hard. The cake itself is very rich nad the whipped cream compliments it. The only thing is that you really have to watch the cake in the oven.... the edges get brown very fast and you don't want it to burn. I made this for my mom for Mother's day and she loved it!

My sister made this for her husband's birthday and it was great. She doubled the whip cream topping. I did think it was a tad bit too sweet so I would cut some of the sugar.

Loved it

I loved the dense texture to this cake. I used homemade strawberry jam for the filling and topped with fresh berries. A little orange in the icing/filling... WOW! Great base cake for almost any filling.

My husband loved this cake. I am not a huge strawberry shortcake fan, but did enjoy it. The cake has an almost coarse texture, which adds a nice dimension to the dish because the whipped cream is so airy. People loved it.

I made this for my office and it was great in the hot summertime. I didn't put the cake together until the morning before I went in because I was afraid it would be too soggy. It was actually better the next day after being in the fridge. The citrus flavor was much more evident the second day. Next time, I'll make it the night before.

Loved It!

I only had non-fat sour cream on hand, so I think that had something to do with the cake coming out slightly dry. BUT, everyone raved about it and finished it off!

I went to a cookout where everyone brought something. When we arrived I placed the cake on the table with everything else. Five minutes after the eating began the cake was gone. I was also asked for the recipe. This is a keeper.

This was a wonderful, easy cake to make. I did not have an 8inch pan, so I used a 9inch springform pan, and put the remaining batter into greased ramakins(so I could try the cake before serving it, as my baking skills are not the greatest) It turned out great! I think if you wanted to try something a little different you could make individual cakes for your guests and use the same filling.

This is my favorite strawberry shortcake receipe. I first tried this cake two years ago and I lost the receipe. I was so glad to see it again on the food networth. This cake is very moist and all the flavors of the cake blend in with the strawberries to make it my family's favorite receipe. I use a lot more whip cream than the receipe calls for making it even more delicious.

I have made this cake several times. In fact, I made this for myself for Mother's Day this year and ate most of the cake myself!! It is easy and delicious. Don't leave out the zest, it gives a great flavor to the cake and is a nice companion to the strawberries and whipped cream.

This is the third or fourth recipe by Ina that I have tried, and I am so pleased with the clarity of her instructions. Follow them to the letter, and you will love the results. This cake turned out exactly like the one Ina made on her program, and my family and I loved it! Ina has such a wonderful way of making cooking seem relaxing and fun, and every time I try one of her recipes I see that she's right. She's so down-to-earth and personable and she demystifies the things about cooking/baking that can make some people shy away from giving it a shot. I would try any of her recipes, any time. Keep them coming! :-)

Very easy and delicious cake. Follow good baking practices(see the baking911.com website if you don't bake much) and it will come out great. I used a 9X2 round pan to get a bigger cake and put the extra batter in a 7X2 loaf pan. It baked perfectly at 45mins in my oven (the loaf was done a few minutes sooner). I drizzled the smaller cake with lemon icing and served it with lemon curd. The possibilities are endless because the cake has such a clean, versatile flavor and great crumb.

Perfectly Beautiful and Delicious

I made this for my sister's birthday and it turned out wonderfully. Using farmer's market strawberries makes all the difference. The quality of the berries really makes the cake. The hints of lemon and orange zest are refreshing in the moist cake. Some said it was dense; it wasn't. It was very moist, light, and soft. I think if you overbeat the batter (which you are warned not to do in the recipe) then this might happen. This is easy and will impress!

Delicious and simple country dessert

User: LINDA from Hackettstown, NJ    User Rating:
A lovely cake; sweet and simple to prepare and enjoy! Since the recipe yields two 8" cake layers and only one is needed, I simply halved the cake ingredients and it came out perfectly. The orange and lemon rind add just the right touch of flavor and the sour cream adds tenderness. To those who found the cake dense: make sure to blend the room temperature butter and sugar for several minutes at a high speed 'til it's light and fluffy and try not to overmix the batter once it's all combined. So good - I'll take this over traditional strawberry shortcake any day!

Great flavor, not so great texture

I may inadvertently be punishing the recipe rating because of my own admitted lack of baking skills, but my cakes turned out a little too dense for my liking. My family still liked it, but I was expecting something a little more airy and moist. Based on flavor alone, however, this rates a 5--the citrus notes in the vanilla cake enhanced the sweetness of even winter-cultivated strawberries.

YUMMY! :>)

Delicious cake and whip cream topping. Best time to make this cake would be during the summer time when strawberries are fresh, sweet, and inexpensive. Easy recipe. Thanks Ina!

Great cake, but in your recipe you said cut one of the cakes in half. So does this make two separate cakes? Or I'm not sure what you meant. I didn't see the show but I always check your recipes, and when I read it, I naturally thought to put one 8-inch cake on top of the other, but then you said to cut one in half. Just not clear on what you did.
