I made this with devils food cake, cherries with a splach of cherry liquor, and chocolate pudding (whipped cream and almonds on top). I have to say I used like a quarter of the suggested sugar, but it was great! I love the contrasting textures, gives you a bite of everything.

I love this cake! I entered it in my church's cake contest 3 weeks ago and beat everyone - even a professional baker! Of course, I had to alter the name just a tad - the Baptists are a bit too conservative for any kind of "Sex" cake!!! Love it!!!!

I made this cake for my in laws who are professional food critics. By the end of the night the ENTIRE cake was gone. My father inlaw even scraped the remaining crubs off of the cake platter. Everytime they come to dinner now they ask if I can make this cake for them. They have also told all their friends about how wonderful the daughter inlaw can bake.

I wasn't sure at first but BOY was I wrong!!! I love this cake and it is so easy to make!!! I cut the sugar in half (it's still more than sweet enough) and use cool whip as a time saver. I seriously make this all the time. I now always keep crushed pineapple in my cupboard. Everytime I make it, it gets rave reviews! I also have made a chocolate variation with frozen rasberries and sliced almonds.

My husband took one bite and said, "Not even close." But, it was a very, very good cake. It DID have that 'cake mix' taste to it, though. So, next time I will make my own yellow cake, and it will definitely be a 5-star recipe. Light, refreshing, and very good.

We loved this cake. There are a lot of steps, so it is time consuming, but it is soooo good. Only 2 of us in the house, so it was a lot of cake, so we did not put all the whipped cream on the top. Made the cream and topped the individual pieces as they were eaten. Will make it again.

This cake was fabulous!!! Easy to make and tasted delicious. I made it for a SuperBowl party they gobbled it up and everyone wanted the recipe. They requested that I make it again the next week for a baby shower - again there was none left. I made no modifications at all to the recipe. I did however at both cakes, ask the question is it really better than sex? Both times it was unanimous that the cake was beyond delicious but not better than sex!! I will make this from now on as my standrad dessert to bring to any and every event!!!

This is my second time making this cake and it really is a hit. I almost took away a star because several people do not like chunky pieces of fruit in their cake, like my picky husband. It is SO easy to make. You could even do variations of this by using cherries instead of the pineapple and doing chocolate cake or peaches, blueberries, strawberries, etc. You can also combine the pudding with the whipped cream for the frosting but I prefer it seperate. For how easy this is to make and how good it is, I give it 5 stars.

I love it

I was so excited to make this recipe after reading the reviews and it was one of the worst cakes I've ever met. Despite reducing the sugar, it was so cloyingly sweet that it gave me a stomach ache. Even my two boys didn't eat more than two bites. I think if you're accustomed to eating cakes and puddings from boxes, then you might actually enjoy it. Otherwise, try something else. There are much better recipes out there. Sorry Paula--I'm one of your biggest fans.

User: Angie from Oldsmar, FL    User Rating:
I have had this recipe for over 20 years. The only thing I do different is I use a Jiffy cake mix. The cake will be less cake and leave more room in your 9 X 13 pan for all the topping you have to put on top. I also do not add sugar, instead I pour the pineapple with the juice straight on top of the cake. I also add sliced bananas on top of the pudding before I add the whipping cream. Easy to make and everyone always love it!

Suggestions
05/20/2007 at 04:26pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
To everyone who thinks this dessert is too sweet, here are some suggestions: Use pineapple canned in JUICE not SYRUP. Skip the cooking of the pineapple. Don't oversweeten your whipped cream. Use regular vanilla pudding instead of french vanilla. And to everyone who is complaining about the flavor of the yellow cake itself... It's a boxed cake mix! If it doesn't taste good, it's YOUR fault. It's difficult to make a boxed cake mix taste bad.

Definately a winner!

This recipe is soooo good! I make this every Christmas and for most gathering events. There has never been a time that I'm not asked repeatedly for this recipe. For my father in law who's a diabetic I use splenda, no sugar pudding, and unsweetened pineapple and to save a little time I use good ol' cool whip rather than whipped cream. With the splenda mixture you can't even tell it's not real sugar. Enjoy all and thanks again Paula for another wonderful recipe!

I took this cake to a church potluck yesterday and it disappeared fast! I was afraid it might be too moist with all the pinapple juice but it was perfect. My cake had cooled completely before topping with the pinapple because I came across this recipe after I had baked and cooled a yellow box cake. I then put it in the fridge overnight to cool the pinapple and added the remaining toppings in the morning. I used Light Cool Whip instead of real whipped cream and it was excellent. Will definitley make again!!

I wanted to make a special dessert for my office Thanksgiving lunch, so i tried this recipe.I was quite dissapointed with the outcome. The cake actually had liquid in the bottom. I'm not sure if it was from the pineapples or the frosting really didn't get stiff enough and became too liquidity

yes it is!

This cake is delicious! I have several friends who really don't like desserts (yes i know something is just wrong with them) and they all loved this. This is great for a light tasty dessert in the spring and summer. I get request from my friends to make this because it isn't too sweet. To cut some of the calories and carbs out of this I subsituted Splenda for the sugar. I have made it both ways and they taste alike!

So Yummy!

This cake is easy to put together and tastes great. Friends and family ask for it regularly. I cut the sugar a bit..made it more by taste but it still tasted fantastic. This is a really nice "potluck" cake. Feeds a lot of people yet still looks a bit more special than "box" cake. Keeps well in the fridge too.
