This is a great recipe. Instead of making the mashed potatoes, I use instant to save time. My family & friends love this dish!!!

I made a few changes

User: Michael from La Habra, CA    User Rating:
I had a party and had to come up with some thing that everyone could have and walk around with. This worked great. Although for the meat I used ground beef, lamb an pork all mixed together and then added oven baked bacon for that crunch. I also mixed eight table spoons of bacon drippings to the meat mixture for added flavor. (I bake the bacon on a Teflon wire rack, the one with the squares not the one with the long wires.) I made all the pies in a six inch disposable aluminum pie dishes, 46 in all even though I only had 28 guests I though some people may want seconds. At the end of the day all 46 were gone. I lined the pie dishes with pie dough and baked them first until they were almost browning. Then I poured the mixture in to the baked crusts. Instead of Worcestershire sauce I used Soy Sauce because most of my family is allergic to sea food. Worcestershire sauce has anchovies in it. I browned the mashed potatoes with a torch because they would not brown in the oven as the recipe stated. What a great 4th of July for 2008 I also used one of Sandra Lee's recipe for the drinks.

The gravy for the ground beef really jazzed it up and the sour cream in the potatoes made them lite and fluffy. Made me feel like a cook!!!

Had some leftover ground beef, half an onion, some old peeled baby carrots and 4 "getting old" potatoes...what a great dinner it all made! The only variance was corn (didn't have peas) and I added garlic salt just in case it was bland. Superb...the family ate every bite! Thanks RR!

We loved this Shepherd's Pie recipe. Wonderfully easy to make, hearty, and filling! REAL COMFORT FOOD! I did do a small variation which turned out to be an extra treat....I used invidual ceramic ramekins and layered all the ingredients per the recipe and topped with finely grated cheddar & monterey jack cheeses in addition to the fresh chopped parsley and paprika. Each member of the family enjoyed having their own special dish! Thanks Rachel for another great recipe!

Being Irish, I've had my share of Shepherd's Pie at various pubs around the country. But I've never attempted it at home. This was so easy to prepare, and was absolutely delicious! I used more broth than the recipe called for (adding a little at a time to get the right consistency). The flavor was spot-on. If you're in a real rush try refrigerated mashed potatoes on top, just prepare them first.

Easy & Yummo!

I watched Rachel's episode for this shepherd's pie about a month ago. I had some extra ground beef in the freezer and had no idea what to make for supper that night so I tried it. Needless to say...it was great. Of course like most of us I changed a few ingredients to suit my family's taste but it was great! My husband loved it and he is the type who usually never makes any type of comment about his meals. Thanks for a quick and tasty meal.

We make this as a easy yummy weeknight meal....great comfort food. My husband was a teacher at the Naval Academy and would teach those future Navy Pilots how to make this before going to Flight School. It was a regular occurrence in May to come home and find this meal prepared for us by a bunch of First Class. Proving its easy enough for a beginner and a great budget meal.

This was a good "base" recipe--like other reviewers, I found it to be rather bland and lacking in the amount of meat called for. Spice it up with some other seasonings and it's not so bad. I think I will look for another recipe next time though.

This recipe was very easy to make and also reminiscent of the comfort food dish we were looking for. I wanted to make a 6-person serving, so I used 2 lbs ground beef and a few more peas. I also used 3 lbs of potatoes and just made regular mashed potatoes, using sour cream, milk, butter, salt and pepper. I also added more broth to make it saucier.

more like 2 hrs.

I made this shepherd's pie the other night for dinner and it was fantastic. However, I made it with ground turkey instead of sirloin and I flavored the turkey and the gravy with sage, omitting the worceshtershire sauce. The result was like Thanksgiving Day in one dish!! There are only two of us and we almost ate the whole thing! Also, I ran my potatoes through a potato ricer to make them fluffier, it takes a couple more minutes but the result of the potatoes is worth it. Thanks Rach! This is a keeper

I thought this recipe was easy and very good. Not sure if it came in at 30 minutes or under however. One thing I would suggest is either a tbsp of tomato paste to the ground meat mixture or more beef boullion. Additionally, a little shredded cheese on top would send this over the edge.

Pretty good but.......

I think this was a good recipe but I added more to it. When I make it again I am going to add a few garlic cloves to the potatoes while they are cooking next time. They need more zing. I also added chopped garlic to the mixture along with some tomato sauce. I increased the wocestershire sauce to a tablespoon. Only threw in a handful of peas. I baked this for 45 min at 350 rather than broiling it. Great dish, just needed a bit more zing for me.

User: Kate from Lathrup Village, MI    User Rating:
This recipe builds upon the basic bones of the classic sheperd's pie, but ends up being just a little too heavy in the end. The mash potatoes get mixed with cream AND sour cream AND an egg yolk, and this on top of heavy ground beef and a thick gravy makes for a heavy, heavy meal. I'd recommend 86ing the sour cream and egg, and going for ground turkey and a chicken gravy for a lighter dish.

I love this recipe

I made this last week and right away got a request to make it again. It was a simple recipe. We had everything on-hand to make it as well. The potatoes in this dish are just about the best I've ever tried. The only recommendations I have are to make twice the gravy and a little bit more potatoes if you want to do this in a 13x9 pan. The recipe was sufficient but next time, I'm doing this. We also had leftovers w/ a family of 4.

This is only my 3rd time eating shepherd's pie and my 1st time making it so I don't have a lot of knowledge on the topic, nor do I have a lot to compare to, but this was a pretty good meal. I ended up eating almost the whole thing in one night! I did all beef, ground at home Alton Brown style (1/2 chuck, 1/2 sirloin). It was good but can see why some would say it's bland. I'll use 1/2 lamb next time. If nothing else the cream cheese potatoes, if served separate, would make a great side dish.

This didn't blow me away, but it was quick and I'd definitely make it again. Based on other comments about blandness, I added brined green peppercorns to the lamb and dried mustard to the potatoes. I also skipped the entirely superfluous step of making the gravy in a separate skillet and just added the flour directly to the meat before stirring in the broth. Exact same results, one less dish to do!

This is a really good recipe, especially if it's your first time to make shepherd's pie. One slight suggestion though: make slightly more of the roux base for the gravy than the recipe calls for. Actually, just make more gravy. I increased the butter to 2.5 or 3 tbsp and slightly upped the flour as well. Also, try putting a little grated cheddar (use extra sharp if you have it) on top at the very end of the broiling.

A good start

Okay it took more like 45 minutes, but it was worth it. Based on ther reviews I read I added a little garlic to the meat. I lightened up a bit...cut the butter by 1/4, elminated the olive oil, used fat free sour cream and fat free half and half instead of cream and a dash more of worcester sauce. Everyone loved it. Not bland at all, as some reviewers complained. Easy and tasty

I have searched for a shephers pie recipe that doesn't taste like just crumbled beef with pototes. This recipe has delicious gravy to bring all the ingredients together. It took longer than 15 minutes to prepare but it was easy. I used corn and peas, frozen onions, and forgot the parsely. I have always used cream cheese in my potatoes, it makes them so creamy. I didn't use the egg and used milk instead of broth or cream. My family loved it and the differnce was the gravy added to the beef mixture.

This was a rare meal that both my husband AND both kids loved and ate without complaint. The only thing I changed was that I used a piece of stew meat instead of ground beef, as that was what I had thawed. I just cut it into small chunks and followed the recipe, and then before putting the potatoes on top, I put the meat/veggie mixture into the oven at 350 for about a half hour (covered) so the meat was very tender. Then I added the potatoes and broiled it. It was great!

So I am going to simplify the recipe and just mash the potatoes and put them directly on top.

My fiance and I both love this recipe, but don't be fooled by the 15 minute prep time. Sure, Rachel can pull it off, but chopping an entire onion AND peeling two pounds of potatoes? I don't think so, at least not for us! The mashed potatoes are pretty bland as-is, so I would recommend adding a bit of salt to them during mashing. We also have made this recipe with ground turkey and it's just about as good as with the beef!

I agree with another reviewer who basically said halve the potatoes and double the meat/other stuff. The ratio of potatoes to meat was a bit high. Also, I would bump up the herbs/spices/worcestershire, as it was turning out a bit bland as I was cooking and tasting. However, it is a good basis for Shepherd's Pie, and was quick and easy, so I would make it again with adjustments.

First, it takes longer than 30 minutes to prepare. It took me an hour. Second, you will have to add more spices to the meat or it will be bland. I added some garlic. This meal is filling and sticks to the ribs, but I was expecting a little more. I should of known better because after all it's only ground meat and mashed potatoes.

Frankly, there was so much going on in this recipe that I couldn't bare the thought of having to deal with mashing potatoes on top of it all. It still tasted great though. The gravy part was the best--what an aroma! I will gladly make this again and again. Everyone I served it to gobbled it up instantly. Great comfort food!

Although I altered the recipe just a bit it is still most definly a keeper! The only thing I did diffent was a meat substitution. Some how I eneded up with too little hamberger meat so I subsituted half the meat with breakfast sausgae (spicy). Talk about adding some flavor. WOW! I don't think we'll ever do the original recipe.

This recipe was fantastic - my husband raved over it. But one person doing it by themselves will take longer than the prep time stated in the recipe, unless you're expert at chopping and dicing. But it's well worth the effort. It's also a good recipe to build on - you could add mushrooms or other herbs to your taste because it is a fairly simple recipe.

I added garlic, but otherwise I thought this was great. I was a bit hesitant not adding any salt to the potatoes, but it came out well. I also would say not to super mash the potatoes, as a little bit of lump (not a ton) gave the food some more texture. I loved gravy recipe that you pour on the meat. Next time, I will add corn too.

My friends and I were just amazed how an old classic favorite can just take a yummy twist... One thing I did try though... is I added garlic salt to the hamburg while mixing the broth mixture... and it just added a little yummie kick to it.... but other than that i stuck to this recipe like white on rice.... which I never do becuase I always like to change it up a bit and take it in my own direction.... but this was DELICIOUS!!!
