I cook bacon first and use half bacon grease and half olive oil to fry mine. what's the butter for? 05/01/2008 at 07:59pm User: yvonne from greenville, TX User Rating: This is a good traditional recipe. I wonder why the butter. There are no instructions for the 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter. First time making this--easy and tastey! 01/10/2008 at 11:52pm User: Emilie from Lakeville, MN User Rating: My Mother-in-law picked a bunch of green tomatoes, so it gave me the idea to try fried green tomatoes for the first time. This recipe was exactly what I was expecting, but didn't expect just how good they were going to be! It makes ALOT, so be prepared to eat alot, or feed alot of people, they weren't so great reheated, but delicous fresh. Fried Green Tomatoes 05/29/2007 at 08:48pm User: Lisa from Sunnyvale, CA User Rating: I have had these at resturants and really like them so I thought I would give it a try. The cornmeal was gritty and the whole thing didn't have a lot of flavor. My guests liked them though. They're terrific! 08/11/2006 at 09:21am User: SHARON from Germantown, MD User Rating: Have made them several times and each time had to double the amount of tomatoes I made. My family could not get enough. The only change I made was to add 1 tsp. of Seasoned Salt to the dry ingredients. Crowd Pleaser! 07/05/2006 at 12:42pm User: TRACY from Houston, TX User Rating: Not only was this an easy recipe, but my friends were eating them faster than I could cook them. I liked them plain, but the crowd loved them with the tobasco and lemon. Good 06/04/2006 at 08:02pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Very Good Just as good as in the South. 05/29/2006 at 09:25pm User: Brynna from Tallahassee, FL User Rating: The only thing that I would change would be to add more spices. But as is the tomatoes are great, espically when made with green heirloom tomatoes. Best recipe yet 11/08/2005 at 01:56pm User: Russ from West Hollywood, CA User Rating: I've tried making fried green tomatoes several times before and always ended up throwing most of the dish out. This is the best recipe I've found for them yet. I'm not sure I'm destined to become a huge fan of fried green tomatoes, but this recipe is worth trying. I'll make them again next year. It's not easy being green! 11/04/2005 at 11:00am User: JOANNE from Shirley, NY User Rating: What else other than pickling and frying can one do with green tomatoes? Frying was the only alternative for us. It gets 4 stars just b/c they were eaten and not wasted, but they didn't knock my socks off. Had them along w/our eggs for breakfast. They were tasty that way, altho' the coating didn't fully adhere to it, and I had to keep adding more oil to the pan b/c it kept disappearing. You DO need 1/2 cup of oil for frying, maybe more. I felt that adding the salt and pepper to the liquid ingredients lost its effect. I'd add it to the dry instead. We had to add salt at the plate b/c they tasted bland w/o adding more at the end. Terrific! 09/19/2005 at 02:03pm User: PRINCIPESSA from Sevierville, TN User Rating: This recipe should also work for frying other vegetables as well. They turned out very tasty and the easy breading had a great flavor. My only trouble was that they turned out soggy, maybe next time I will try to remove some of the seeds. It is awesome and the Hot Sauce is an essential!!! This is good 06/18/2004 at 01:40am User: MISS from Perris, CA User Rating: Not as good as grandma's but that may only because my memory tends to remember things better than they were. When I went outside this morning and saw all those green huge beefsteak tomatoes in my back yard I could not think of what to do with them. Then I found this recipe...a perfect fit!
