Under-whelmed

Out of 12 guests, 1 guest told me "these are really good." Guests were taking second helpings, but I was a little disappointed I didn't get more compliments. It is a very good idea to cook and taste one meatball before you bother forming the rest. I think you will find that these meatballs need a LOT MORE seasoning. Add more caraway, more salt, more pepper, more dill, more parseley, etc. I recommend you increase the amount of breadcrumbs, and I would consider making the breadbcrumbs from rye bread. The mixture was too loose with the amount of breadcrumbs in the recipe. Lingonberry preserves are NOT a staple at your grocery store. Fortunately, they are bottled in Dundee , Oregon, a few miles from my home. They cost about $8-9 for 12 oz. Frankly, although they are good preserves, I felt I could have substituted whole cranberry sauce and saved a lot of money. Just sweeten the cranberry sauce first. This was a very pretty presentation in the chafing dish, especially for Christmas, after it was sprinkled with parseley and lingonberry preserves, a pretty contrast in red and green. Worth making, but jazz them up a little - these wee bits only have 15 seconds to become famous.

My sister-in-law made these on Christmas Eve. They are the most delicious Swedish meatballs I've ever tasted!!

A little strange

Too much caraway & the soaked breadcrumbs made the texture a little mushy. Will be good with a little modification.

Awesome Dish

I made this dish for a family gathering of 9 plus kids - everyone loved it. With so many meatballs (I made over 40) my pan got a bit sticky so we strained out some of the bits before making the sauce. You can start browning the meatballs early since they can simmer in the sauce for awhile. We'll definitely make this again and am planning on freezing a bunch of meatballs to have them on hand for weeknight dinners.

I made this for my son's coming home party from the Navy and everyone just loved this. If you have a Cost Plus World Market in your area, I got the Lingonberry preserves there.

My family went nuts over this dish! I could not find the lingonberry jelly, so I substituted the red currant instead. It was great, but I wonder what it would have been like with the lingonberry? I'll keep searching for it. Great recipe! :)

This took me a while to prepare but only because i ground up the meat myself by pounding it with a big knife. But boy was it worth it! i couldnt find lingonberry or red current jam so i used black current and it still came out FABULOSO!!!!

One modification needed

I loved the recipe. The only thing I won't do in the future is to soak the breadcrumbs. It made the clump together and sometimes you get a mushy bite in the meatball. Do try and find the lingonberry preserves. It is a great flavor.

A HUGE Hit!

My family just went NUTS over this dish! My husband didn't shut up for days after I cooked it...he even told his co-workers! I have a finnicky son who rarely likes anything I cook and he also loved this...I was shocked! I have cooked it a few more times and my daughter even asked me to cook it for her birthday dinner. The only drawback is that it is pretty labor intensive. It takes a while to prepare and there are several steps. But family is always worth the added bit of work! :)

needs a little tweaking

Normally I think that Tyler Florence's recipes are as good as it gets, but this one needs a little work. The meatballs are way too big. Although, that's a very simple fix. The only other adjustment I made was to double the ingredients for the sauce. Otherwise I didn't think there was enough sauce to serve the meatballs with egg noodles.

Very, very good but needs tweaking

First time I made these with the soaked breadcrumbs, it was a mess. Next time I just used dry made them smaller and meatballs held together much better. First time I didn't grind the caraway and second time I did. It makes a BIG difference! I cut the amount of lingonberry jam a little, and added a little more salt. My husband is swedish and he loved them.

Pretty good

This recipe was pretty good and very rich. I wasn't sure if I liked the texture of the meatballs though, it almost seemed kinda dry. I may try this recipe again, but make the meatballs with half beef and half pork.

Outstanding

I made some changes (for the better, I think.) Used hamburger and turkey. b/c turkey is so dry and tasteless, added a few tablespoons of olive oil. 3/4 cup Italian breadcrumbs, lots of pepper and dill weed. Meatballs light and delicious. Used plain yogurt instead of sour cream. To the gravy recipe, added 7 oz. jar gravy (with a nod to Sandra Lee.) My family loved this.

To Die For!

I absolutely loved this recipe. My one suggestion to anyone who is going to try this one is that the meatballs have a better flavor if you prepar them the night before and leave them uncooked in the fridge overnight. It gives the seasonings a chance to meld. The lingonberry jam is a key part of this recipe. Don't cook these things without adding some to the sauce. I serve my meatballs over egg noodles. I can't wait to make this one for my boyfriend this weekend!

Disappointed!

I thought to make these for my Swedish husband but we were both disappointed. Granted, I didn't have a means to grind the caraway. That flavor was overpowering and may have been more subtle if I could have ground the seeds as instructed. However, we found the jam to sweeten the sauce too much and it was lacking something; salt for one, and that tangy kick that we're used to in Swedish meatballs. The meatballs were pretty mushy as well. I did ours over egg noodles and was left with tons of unappetizing leftovers. However, the next night I sprayed a casserole dish with nonstick spray, put in the leftovers, and seasoned with onion salt and lemon pepper, and then topped with some shredded cheddar, parmesean, and munster cheeses. I baked it until the noodles were crunchy and it was actually pretty tasty although that dang caraway was still really strong.

Still Receiving Recipe Requests

I made these for our Christmas Eve party last year and I am still getting requests for the recipe. We had about 50 people over and these puppies didn't last. I made a double batch and didn't even get one! I did, however, make them again for a smaller party and tried them. They are fabulous and perfect the way they are. Don't change a thing! I can see why everyone wants the recipe. Enjoy!

Where's the allspice?

I am 100% Swedish, and what is lacking in this recipe is allspice. A Swedish meatball just doesn't taste Swedish without it.

I just finished eating these and I have to say they were really great, the perfect mix of sweet and savory. I used red currant jelly and beef stock instead of chicken, because I had some fresh in my fridge. My boyfriend who claimed to hate swedish meatballs couldn't get enough of them. I have never made a Tyler Florence recipe that wasn't a hit. Thanks Tyler!

I made these for a holiday potluck and they were a huge hit. I could not find the lingonberry jam, so I used red currant instead. Also, I used regular dry bread crumbs instead of fresh. Like most meatballs, they are labor-intensive to make. But worth it for a special occasion.

I made this for heritage-fest at my daughter's school. There are 19 kids in her class, and with the teacher and parents that were helping that day, I decided to make 32. It was a hit with all the kids! They all but licked the bowl clean! I did not use as much dill, as I made it once before bringing it to school and the dill seemed to overpower the meatballs. Definately worth making.

Great recipe and easy. I used a meat loaf mix (beef, veal, pork) and did not grind the caraway after toasting it. A fresh squirt of lemon to the sauce before serving seemed to enhance all the flavors. Served over egg noodles with red currant jelly on the side. Yum.

Yummmmmmm!

I thought this was very good. My husband thought it was good but not great, and that's why I'm only giving it four stars. I did make a couple of small changes to the recipe. I used light sour cream, and I added more breadcrumbs than what the recipe called for. I agree with the other reviewers that sweetened cranberry sauce would work just as well as lingonberries; would have been less expensive and more conveniently found.

Exceptionally different in a good way!

I'm always looking for recipes that make something ordinary extraordinary, and believe me this is one of them. Ground beef, how ordinary can you get! I made a couple of substitutions because not every ingredient is always available on this tiny tropical island where I live; Curacao. I subsituted cranberry jam for the Lingonberry. I also soaked bread in water (not milk!) in my opinion meatballs just taste better this way. I also added some fresh dille to the cream sauce. And I used cream in stead of sour cream. I also used some fresh nutmeg in the seasoning for the meatballs, and lots of freshly ground black pepper. This is the first recipe that I have found online that actually rocked! Made write a review about how good it was!! Barbara

I absolutely love any recipe from Tyler! This recipe is sooo easy and tasty. The only thing I couldn't find were the ground Caraway seeds, but I just used my grinder to make the seeds into a powder. If you love Tyler...I mean if you love Swedish Meatballs, this is a recipe your family will enjoy for many years.

Served this to a native Swede, he was impressed and said tasted like "home". I made the meatballs appitizer size using a 1/4 c ice cream scoop and served in a chafing dish. I did add another 1/4 of Lingonberry to the sauce but I was using Lingonberry Sauce instead of jam.

I made this for my roommate's birthday a year ago and he now requests it for any special occasion. It takes some time to make the meatballs and fry them but it's worth it. The jam makes a wonderful pink sauce that the boys (actually grown men) fight over. Stephanie, Phoenix

These meatballs were not what I expected considering all of the great reviews. The sauce I think is what killed it. I think I may have possibly added a bit too much of the sour cream. All and all, I doubt if I will be making it again.

Everytime I make these, there aren't any left! If you are going to soak the breadcrumbs, make sure you don't let them go any longer than the posted time! I put them in a fine strainer & press the liquid out with the back of a spoon - you can always add a bit of dried back in if you feel it's too wet. I also make them smaller than the 1/2 cup - I use a tablespoon cookie scoop. These also freeze very well - reheat gently - Great job, Tyler!!
