My wife made this pie for Thanksgiving. It was the first dessert to go. It was a huge hit with my family. I admit, making it was very time consuming. But everyone was amazed. I can't wait until she makes it again for Christmas. This time she better make an extra one and leave it at home.

I served this to guests this past weekend and EVERYONE was in heaven. Oohs and aahs all around! The combination of banana, chocolate and caramel in this dessert is incredible, not to mention the presentation. It does take some time to prepare so plan on that. To the previous reviewer remarking on the unset custard I would say that maybe you gave up just a little too soon. If you are patient it will all of a sudden thicken to an incredibly thick pastry cream. After all, it has 1/2 cup of corn starch in it. However, as the recipe warned, it may separate some. Mine lumped a bit but I had the mixer handy and beat it till smoothe and it was wonderful! And don't shortchange the recipe by not using the real vanilla bean; it adds tons of flavor. If you want to impress just about anybody, I encourage you to try this pie. It is like no banana cream you have ever tasted.

recipe missing a step?

I know this is rated expert but 3 of us tried to make it together and it seems as though a step is missing. We ended up with a huge bowl of unset custard, so we used an old recipe from Betty Crocker cookbook for banana pudding and finished this recipe accordingly and it was quite delicious. Would like to try Emeril's version though.

this is it...believe me!!

this cake is fantastic, my family don't particularly enjoy desserts, but they tried this one because it was my sister's birthday...and they finished the entire cake! highly recommend it (though the crust can be a little thicker). enjoy!

If you ever have the chance to eat at Emeril's in Miami, do not forget to try this superb and decadent dessert! After a week long Carribean cruise, the thing I remembered most was the unforgettable meal at that fabulous restaurant! I couldn't wait to get home and make it for my kids!

I first had this pie at Emeril's restaurant at Universal Orlando. It really is amazing. The first time I made it the pie never set up - although it was absolutely a delicious pudding in graham cracker crust! The second time I used a hand mixer and beat the egg mixture for about 3-4 minutes until quite thick before adding the hot milk/cream. It separates very quickly when you put it on the heat so I just used the mixer again and beat it for 5 to 7 minutes while it cooked. It was the correct consistency at that point and it turned out perfectly. Do not skimp on the vanilla bean! The second time I made it with only half a bean and used some vanilla extract. It did not taste nearly as wonderful as the first "mistake". Great recipe - thanks for sharing Emeril!

AWESOME!!!

This is the most amazing banana cream pie! I brought it over to a family member's gathering and everyone still raves about it. I added/changed 2 things ... I melted chocolate and added it to the graham cracker crust as a layer. Also, I used cinnamon graham crackers. Does anyone have any tips to getting the crust to not fall apart when you cut the pieces?

Wonderful recipe. Just make sure you leave enough time for the pie to set. I was on a time crunch and tried to cut a little time off and the custard was not completely set...which was totally my fault. But great pie!

I'm not a big banana cream pie fan, that being said this pie is truly amazing. My family had a piece of this at Emeril's restaraunt and I immediately came home and looked for the recipe. It's a bit of work making the pie and the sauces but when combined at the end..it's truly worth every bit of the work. If you want to make something impressive...this is the recipe!

it was awsome

My mouth has been watering for this since I saw someone else eating it in his restaurant. When I made it myself, the caramel didn't work out. I think the term for it is "sugared"? Since then, I have seen other caramel recipes where you don't stir, you just shake the pan. Is this a mistake in the recipe, or did I mess up somehow?

An Awesome Pie

This was an incredibly tasty pie. Not low-cal, but very delicious. My crust was maybe a little thin but with the cream, caramel, and chocolate it really didn't affect the presentation or the taste. If you've never made anything with custard, practice with a simpler recipe first and then come back and make this!

Absolutely delicious and looks great too!

This banana cream pie recipe is superb!!! I couldn't find vanilla bean at the store so I substituted lots of pure vanilla extract and it tasted great! I can't wait to try it with the real stuff once I can find it!

Good Review from Guests

This was very time consuming and for a first time cream pie maker...a little challenging. I didn't know how think the custard should be and I took it off way too early. I ended up with a huge bowl of custard soup which overflowed in my pie crust. In the end, after reheating the custard the next morning, it was much better. I think the flavor was compromised though. Will make it again now that I know what consistency I'm going for.
