I loved how easy this recipe was to make. I also really enjoyed the fact this recipe only needs to chill for two hours instead of the tradional six hours. We had a cookie party and it was much more convient only chilling for a short period of time. Delicious Results. Thanks Alton

The recipe is very easy to follow and the cookies "look great" and were easy to cut in to shapes. But they were bland and tasteless. Looking at other sugar cookie recipes on this site and others, I think some vanilla is missing from the ingredients list.

User: Jessica from Ringgold, GA    User Rating:
This is the first time I have used an AB recipie, but I had no doubt these cookies would be great. They are not too sweet, but don't taste too "floury" either. The icing is good too! This is the best cookie dough to cut out cookies with. It is easy to roll out and does not fall apart on the way to the cookie sheet. Thanks Alton!

The Best Sugar Cookies EVER!
12/25/2005 at 06:41pm
User: Marie from Mansfield, TX    User Rating:
What can I add to all the other great reviews? Well, I can tell you that this is it for me as this is the only sugar cookie and icing I will ever use. My Christmas cookies turned out fantastic and beautiful; and now, I plan to use these recipes to make cookie bouquets for upcoming birthdays. I have to admit that although I have 2 large mixers, I ONLY used my hand mixer without any problem at all. If you follow the recipe to the letter, you will see how easy it is to make these cookies and the Royal Icing. So, please: don't try to tweak perfection! And like Alton says on the show, forget the expensive silicones: parchment paper is THE BEST, especially when used with Crisco's "non-stick spray WITH flour". The flour is already in the spray, thus, spreads evenly on the paper.

User: DeAnna from Watauga, TX    User Rating:
I have never baked ANYTHING from scratch before in my entire life, but after my food-allergic son kept having reactions from store bought dough, I knew I had to do something so he could enjoy Christmas cookies, too. I substituted 2 tbsp. of corn starch for the egg (due to food allergy); used a splash of vanilla extract; 2 tbsp. of buttermilk and 1 tbsp. of milk. Man, these cookies are DELICIOUS! I don't think we'll ever turn back to store bought again!

Great recipe with minor additions
12/24/2007 at 03:41am
User: Rebekah from Ewa Beach, HI    User Rating:
After reading the reviews on this recipe I made some minor additions. 1/2 extra sugar, 1 tsp vanilla. Instead of powdered sugar for rolling out the dough, I made a 50/50 mix of powdered sugar and flour so that the cookies wouldn't burn. I also made sure that I sprayed the bakers non stick spray to the non stick cookie sheets. My cooking time was 3 minutes, rotate and another 4 minutes. The easiest frosting instead of this frosting is powdered sugar and milk. It's easy and tastes great on the cookies!!

I just made these sugar cookies. I know everyone has their own tried and true recipe for sugar cookies and is reluctant to try something new, but you MUST try this one. It's so easy. One batch is not enough- I made a second one in the same evening. Like the other reviewers, I recommend adding a little vanilla. When rolling out the dough, it's a good idea to add some flour in addition to the powdered sugar, just to prevent sticking. You will love these cookies.

User: Annette from Miami Lakes, FL    User Rating:
I've made these cookies the last two Christmases and my family loves them. They are pretty easy to make and easy to roll out. I love the idea of rolling them with powdered sugar, as I have found rolling with flour changes the consistency of the dough sometimes. The only change I make is I add 1 tsp. of vanilla extract but they taste good without them as well. Also, I like that they are not too sweet, because I can leave them plain for those who dont like things to sweet and frost them or sprinkle sugar on them for those who do. You cant go around with this recipe!

I was so excited to make these cookies with my 7 year daughter. Followed the recipe exactly and cooled in fridge for two hours. The dough would not roll out and was a crumbly MESS. So dissapointed, maybe i did something wrong??? Must have because everyone else gave these cookies high ratings. Threw away the cookies and Royal Icing from the same show. Santa's reindeer would not even enjoy these cookies or icing. Going to the store to buy store bought dough and canned icing.

The dough is very easy to work with even after being out and worked on for a while-it didn't get too sticky. After reading some of the other reviews I only used 2 1/2 cups of flour and I also added a tsp of vanilla. I will definately be making these cookies again!

These are more like shortbread cookies, but we love them! They were extremely easy and fun to make. I took someone's suggestion to add 1 tsp. vanilla. Also, we're not icing people so I used my grandma's trick: a little egg yolk/milk mixture to stick sprinkles on. These are our new Christmas cookies.

These cookies really are as good as everyone else has written already. I can't believe how easy they were to make too. What a great idea to use powdered sugar instead of flour to roll out the dough. My 8 year old daughter and I made these sugar cookes and cut them out into cute Christmas shapes. What I did do differently was to add nutmeg. We LOVE nutmeg at this home so there is never too much of it! It gave it just that extra "aaahhh" effect! They held well in the oven and turned out to be the best sugar cookies we had ever made!! Thanks so much for such a great recipe!!

I made this recipe instead of my normal sugar cookie recipe because my daughter has an egg allergy, and I thought that it would be better if I only had to substitute one egg (my normal recipe has 4 eggs). They are fabulous, even better than my normal recipe. I added a little nutmeg. They really dont need frosting, the flavor is excellent on its own.

This was a very tasty cookie. Nice texture, delicate flavor. VERY nice. In fact, my husband, who hates sugar cookies, had FIVE, 3 before frosting and 2 after. I actually prefered the cookies w/o the Royal Icing (too sweet) my husband prefered it with. To get an idea of the kind of people we are, he LOVES buttercream frosting, and I prefer whipped cream frosting.

These cookies are as good as sugar cookies can be! I did substitute part of the milk for vanilla per an earlier reviewer suggestion. I would add a tip to remove the paper from the pan with the cookies on to let cool so they don't break. If you try to move while still hot they are bound to break! Great cookies though, our MOMS group kids loved decorating them.

Finally! Cut-outs that actually roll out easily and don't stick to the counter or rolling pin!!!! Cookies and icing a total knock-out!!! YEAH!!

These cookies are delicious but I was dismayed at how hard it was to get the cookies off the greased baking sheet in one piece. I suppose if I had used parchment or a silicone baking mat it would have worked better but I don't own that equipment. Just want to warn others...space the cookies as indicated in the recipe and try to use parchment or a mat to facilitate the release of the cookie from the baking sheet.

The dough seemed a good consistensy when I was mixing it, and it held up very well when I was rolling it out, but once the cookies were baked, a lot of them broke when I was taking them off the cookie sheet. My sister and I have begun an annual Christmas Cookie contest. I searched the internet and read the reviews on this cookie. I was concerned because I have a sweet-tooth and all the comments about this being more of a shortbread cookie concerned me. However, I added 1 teaspoon of vanilla and they turned out FABULOUS!!! I baked them on silicon baking mats, and just followed the directions, make sure to cut them 1/4" thick and they will be the BEST sugar cookie you have ever made. We ate the test batch before we even had a chance to make the frosting.

For over 30 years my family have been making Christmas cookies. We invite friends and family for this special event! Every year we hold our breaths, and scream, and agonize as we watch my son roll out the dough hoping that it would not stick or roll easily! If we were able to use my grandmothers darling platic cookie cutters it was a miracle. Then the dough would stick and not come out of the cutters, no matter how much flour we used. This dough is a miracle! It's almost too easy!Even after the third use these cookies with intricate detail came out easily! What fun to share out cookie making process and experience without hysterics! You are a genius Sir!!!You have changed our lives forever! A very grateful Diana Warden Larsen of Doylestown,PA.

This recipe was so simple and it turned out fabulous. It seemed to be too floury when I made the dough, but it turned out perfect. I also tried adding some peppermint extract to half the batch. It made them taste even better, and the mint flavor wasn't overwhelming, just a nice accent. No icing needed. I found that it wasn't as important as the recipe say to keep it super cool while rolling. I just rolled them out normally after refrigerating for a few hours, and they came out fine.

User: LAURA from Jacksonville, FL    User Rating:
My mother and I always made cut-out sugar cookies and decorated them at Christmas. As an adult, I've had trouble finding the perfect recipe that made an easy-to-handle dough that didn't result in a bland, floury cookie. This year, my 2-year-old daughter and I decided to give Alton's recipe a try. Well, I decided - she mostly just spilled a lot of flour. These were great! I chilled the dough for maybe 30 min. before rolling it out, and it handled easily. I rolled it on a marble board, and I almost didn't even need the powdered sugar. However, using powdered sugar instead of flour when rolling out made a big difference in the taste. We also made the royal icing for decorating. It was a little thick, so I'll make some adjustments next time. (Also, I'll follow the directions better and use heavy-duty plastic bags - we made a bit of a mess, but it was fun!)

Sugar cookies are pretty, but I've never really been fond of the taste-- until now! These are the BEST!!! Sweet enough to eat plain but not too sweet for icing, crisp but just a bit chewy, easy to work with... and (I found out since I start holiday baking early and freeze the undecorated cookies) they actually improve after a couple of days! Alton does it again!

User: CHRISTOPHER from Denver, CO    User Rating:
I found this recipe very easy to make it took me only 10 minutes! The only thing I don't agree with is the powdered sugar for the stick resistance. I found that it made the cookies a little too sweet and gave them a funky taste as you bit in to them. I myself am going to try half flour and half powdered sugar next time

Light on Sweetness; Prone to Stick to Pan
12/17/2007 at 03:01pm
User: Marci from Saginaw, TX    User Rating:
I've been making rolled sugar cookies for years and why I chose CHRISTMASTIME to try a new recipe is beyond me but I did . . . First off, rolled in powdered sugar, like the recipe calls for, causes the cookies to really CEMENT to the cookie sheet unless it's LIBERALLY greased so if you use this recipe as it states (rolled in powdered sugar and not flour), then be sure you are generous with the grease on the cookie sheet or your cookies will stick. Once I did that, no more cookies stuck to the pan; however, I've never had to grease pans for sugar cookies before. I missed the vanilla not being in the cookie, too. The dough was easy to work with and cut out well. Had no trouble with dry dough or cracking. Still, I'm going back to my old recipe. This one just wasn't sweet enough for my taste. Good luck with it!

I took the time and artfully decorated the cookies and sent a tray to work with my husband, they commented that they sure looked fancy almost too good to eat and the best of all was that one man carefully wrapped a cookie to take home to show his wife hoping it would inspire her.

This recipe is a winner. I followed it to the letter and was pleased with the results. Be sure not to overbake! You will end up with a buttery delicious cookie. I baked them for 7 minutes in my convection oven. Perfect! The dough is a delight to work with, especially when it's cold. It rolls out smoothly, cuts cleanly and transfers easily to the baking sheet. In the future, I I'll pull out 1/4 recipe of the dough at a time from the fridge so it never gets too warm and floppy in the cutters. YUM!

Awful horrible recipe cookies stick & burn; tastes 0

I am wondering if any of the people who reviewed this cookie recipe actually did make them. The problem is the powdered sugar that you are supposed to roll them out with because that sugar sticks to the pan and burns before the cookie is done. Yes, I used non-stick pans with Pam spray too. I have an oven thermometer so I know the setting was correct but with a 7 min timing the cookies were burnt on the bottom from the sugar. Now the worst thing is they taste like nothing and I followed the recipe precisely. I am done with Alton Brown; every time I made one of his recipes it is a huge mess. Do not waste your time of ingredients.

I loved them. One note: I had some friends over to make these cookies and we had to wait quite a while for the dough to soften before it could be rolled out. It comes out of the frige hard as a brick. My guess is it took about an hour for the dough to soften. But, the cookies are fabulous. I like mine rolled out 1/8" instead of 1/4".

Very easy to do, and excellent. The dough rolls very nicely the way the recipe is written, though you can refrigerate dough longer and set it out 100 minutes to get a nice consistency as well. My four and a half year old was quite capable of truly helping as the dough is forgiving!

I made these tonight with my husband and girls and they were simply phenomenal. They were easy to make, easy to roll out, slid right off the parchment paper and held their shape well. We brushed them with an egg wash and decorated them with colored sugar before baking. I would have made the icing (and will next time), but didn't have pasturized eggs and didn't want to risk the whole food-bourne illness thing with little kids. These cookies taste amazing. We can't stop eating them! I doubt any will be left at this time tomorrow. AB, you are just the best. EVER!

It is a little expensive..about $8.00 a roll, but is makes life wonderful in the kitchen! So, a superior 5 stars to Alton and his sugar cookies...I look forward to baking more!

Not too sweet and the perfect level of crispiness, without being crumbly. the icing was a little messy to work with but that was probably because I was working with a bunch of 9 to 11 year-old kids - LOL. Oh, I also followed Altons tip (on the show) to use parchment paper on the cookie sheet and it worked great! Every cookie baked perfectly and slid easily off the sheet.

I am a big fan of Alton Brown and even though I have an excellent cut-out cookie recipe in my collection, I had to give this recipe a try. This is an easy recipe to follow and quick to mix. I put it in the fridge to chill, but when it was time to cut-out it was a bit too stiff to roll(or perhaps I'm too weak.) So, I decided to let it warm up about 15 minutes and then it was perfect. I love the fact that they are rolled out on powdered sugar instead of flour. The dough stayed soft and didn't become tough even after a second rolling. Also, I like his suggestion of arranging all of the cookie cutters on the dough at the same time and keeping them in place until the cookie is on the sheet pan. I rotated my pans and let them cool as suggested. The result was a beautiful looking, clean/crisp cookie that held shape. Sometimes in baking cut-out cookies, they tend to puff-up and lose shape. Not these! They are perfect. They are so good that I plan on using them for a cookie exchange at work. So far, I've made almost 100 cookies (I've doubled the recipe)and the last ones are as yummy and good-looking as the first ones. They are fantastic and very tasty. Not overly sweet, so frosting them will be a nice addition...although my family, especially the kids, enjoyed them plain.
