This has to be the worst macaroni and cheese I've ever tasted. Don't waste your money. I made this for dinner tonight, and nobody liked it. Nobody finished theirs, so I basically just threw my money away on this one. Take my advice and try another recipe.

My kids always liked the "blue box" macaroni and cheese. Now that it's just my husband and I, we're trying different recipes to suit ourselves. This was the first one, and it was great! However, next time I will reduce or even omit the cayenne pepper. It was too hot for my husband.

Wonderful yet easy

I have made this recipe many times & have found it to be easy to make. My husband & I have always enjoyed this. We have used idffernent cheeses, but have found cheddar works the best, although an italian blend also comes out very tasty.

Delicious!

This turned out great! I did, however, mix everything together instead of layering, used 4 cups of cheese, and only 1/3 cup breadcrumbs. Another crowd pleaser!

This is so easy to make, especially for big parties. I've made it several times and it's always a hit. I like to make half with bread crumbs on top and half with just parm cheese on top. Sooo delicious!

good but nothing special

Too many bread crumbs and not creamy enough, otherwise its pretty good. I can tell this will be a great left over dish and it fills you up fast. Only average and nothing above or beyond. Me and my family will definitely finish this....

I love this recipe. I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Joe at a book signing (got a signed copy of his cookbook too!) and told him how much I love this easy & quick recipe. Like most cooks (who think they're real chefs!), I tweaked the recipe a little bit. I add freshly grated nutmeg (only freshly grated will do) to the milk & eggs mixture and I don't put bread crumbs on top, just more cheese. Also, I use extra sharp cheddar and parmesan cheeses(again, I grate my own). It's always a winner. I'm making a BIG batch for tomorrow's Superbowl party!!

Yum!!!

Very easy to make and tasted fabulous. My boyfriend loved it. I used a pan larger than the recipe and it made it very crunchy which made it even better. Thanks for the recipe!!!

Perfect with a few suggestions...

User: Sandra from Ludlow, KY    User Rating:
The taste is great! One suggestion is to watch the amount of pasta used. Make sure that there is enough liquid to cover all of the pasta before you bake. The second suggestions is to cut back on the topping. The recomended amount is a little much for my family's taste...

I've spent a lot of time trying to find a great macaroni recipe and I recently found one on MSN. It was great, but it called for several expensive cheese, and was pretty pricey. However, when I made this last night, it was just as good if not better, and MUCH cheaper to make. I loved it!! I agree with many other reviewers (I'm glad I read these before making it)... mix in more cheese (I used almost four cups) and don't layer... just mix everything together. Instead of the cyanne I used a lot of Tabasco, and also mixed some into the bread crumb topping. Magnificent!

Almost perfect

This was delicious. The flavors came together wonderfully. I was "iffy" about the cayenne, but it gave it a great kick. It got 4 rather than 5 stars because I did add more cheese than recommended & mixed it all up rather than layered it for a creamier, cheesier taste.

I love this recipe. Baked macaroni with bread crumbs is the best way to eat it! My boyfriend, his roommates, and my roommates all have raved about this mac and cheese everytime I've made it. I just add extra shredded and parmesan cheese. I also use italian breadcrumbs and some times for a little kick, I use extra cayenne or some cajun seasoning.

SUPERB

I have been looking for a recipe that doesn't call for you to make a cheese sauce, but instead cheese and a white sauce like my granny made. This came pretty darn close. I did omit the cayenne because she would have never used it. Will make over and over. Thanksgiving just around the corner!!!

I've literally searched for decades to find the M&C that I loved from my Aunt Birdie who died before I was old enough to think of getting a recipe. This was it. It must have been the evaporated milk vs the white sauce base along with the eggs to 'casserole' it. The eggs do result in a solid 'coagulated' M&C which is what I wanted, but if you're looking for smooth and saucy- look elsewhere. Very cheesy, great flavor and easy. (I did use just a bit more butter than the recipe called for, by accident the first time and then by choice after that.) I've taken this to 2 different social functions, and the reviews were the best. Everone asked for the recipe. All gone both times. **I caution people to realize that the recipe is for 2 cups of dried Macaroni (that's 1/2 of a box) and wonder if some of the bad reviews were because folks used the entire box? You must double ingredients to use the 1 pound box, although I don't use the entire 5 cups of cheese- just 4.)

Hats off to this chef. This is a delicious recipe. I absolutely LOVE it!! ♥ I made some mistakes but it was forgiving to the modifications. I added a bit more cheese, toasted bread and made my own breadcrumbs and added the parmesan on top instead of mixing it in -only because I almost forgot the parmesan and had to take it back out of the oven. lol I had to use cream and milk instead of evap as I had none and for the same reason I substituted kraft parmesan instead of fresh grated. I mixed marble cheese with lots of mozzarella and used only half the cayenne as my kids were eating it. This turned out to be the best thing I ever made and my modifications were minor so I commend Chef Joe Randall for his excellent recipe. As I doubled the recipe I have enough left over for tomorrow-yum!! :-)

and yet I love this recipe! It has become a staple at our Thanksgiving & Christmas dinner. I've also made it for special occasions at church and friend's houses and I always get asked for the recipe. I did have to reduce the bread crumbs as others have stated as well as the cayenne/red pepper. And added a little more cheese since my family can never have enough, lol. The best baked mac & cheese I've ever had. And a breeze to make too.

This macaroni and cheese was the worst thing I have ever made. We did not even finish eating our serving and went our for fast food instead. It was not cheesy at all. The egg mixture scrambled in the oven (I even tempered the melted butter in). The bread crumbs were way too thick. It was simple to prepare, it's just too bad it tasted awful.

This was an easy to follow recipe. I read all of the other reviews and followed the advice about the bread crumbs and cheese. This recipe had it's redeeming qualities, but over all I would not call it a great mac and cheese dish. If you were not expecting mac n cheese it may be better. The cheese was lacking and I expected a creamer consistency from the sauce. The parmesan bread crumbs on top I will definitely use in my next revised baked mac n cheese recipe.

The recipe was relatively easy to prepare, but left a lot of dishes in the sink to wash. Adding the Cayenne pepper rules it out for most kids. It was not what I expected, I found it a little dry and to many bread crumbs, not enough cheese. I was looking for a creamier comfort food for a cool fall evening. I will have to try another recipe.
