Confusing recipe

User: Rex from Elizabethtown, KY    User Rating:
The end result was great, but the recipe was confusing - it does require more than 24 lady fingers! And it took much longer than 4 minutes for the egg mixture to get creamy, more like 10 minutes. But it turned out wonderful once finished!

This is a great and easy recipe. I was not able to find the recommended ladyfingers and used very strong coffee instead of expresso but the Tiramisu turned out to be very good despite these deficiencies

THROW AWAY DESSERT

User: JACQUELINE from Buffalo, NY    User Rating:
TERRIBLE! I'M SURPRISED @ GIADA. I ALSO AGREE WITH ANOTHER, THAT THIS WAS A POORLY WRITTEN RECIPE. NO WAY YOU CAN FOLD INTO MASCARPONE WITHOUT WHIPPING IT UP FIRST, WHICH SHE DID NOT MENTION. THE ZABAGLIONE CAME OUT OK, BUT TOOK MUCH LONGER THAN MENTIONED ALSO. BUT THE WORST, WAS THE LADY FINGERS WHICH RUINED THE WHOLE THING. MAYBE BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THE BRAND SHE MENTIONED, BUT THEY WERE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY TOOOOOOO SOAKED ENDING UP LIKE A WET SPONGE! THE PRESENTATION WORKED BUT I'VE NEVER HAD TIRAMISU LIKE THIS. IF I DO TRY IT AGAIN, I WOULD JUST PUT SOME ESPRESSO IN THE FILLING & LEAVE THE LADY FINGERS DRY.

Didn't like this one

Love Giada, but his recipe wasn't very good. The marscapone came out chunky, clumpy. The zabaglione took a lot longer to make than stated and didn't add much to the dish to make it worth while. Would not make it again.

I made this recipe for a friend's going away party, and she loved it. Then I used the proportions and made a white chocolate raspberry (substituting framboise) one for a friend's birthday party (who is allergic to chocolate). He loved it too. Considering the simplicity and the versatility A+.

This dessert gets rave reviews every time I make it. It's one of my favorites. My only comments: Make sure the melted chocolate isn't too hot when you fold it into the egg mixture. Otherwise, you'll end up with chocolate scrambled eggs! 2 1/2 cups of espresso didn't seem to be enough. For convenience, I used 3 cups of strong coffee, with a splash of rum added for good measure! After making the recipe a couple of times, I decided that one or two seconds was all the soakingtime needed; if the soaked cookie feels it could fall apart in your hand, then you've soaked it too long. Just drop it in, turn it over, and take it out.

Tasty and Runny
11/24/2005 at 01:37am
User: Vern from Omaha, NE    User Rating:
The end result was tasty, but the presentation wasn't so hot. I don't think that my zabaglione was thick enough, but the recipe didn't provide a reference for how thick it should be. I definitely didn't have enough ladyfingers and I bought two boxes! That may have been part of the set up problem too. I KNEW it would be runny so I tried freezing it. Came out of the pan great, but began "melting" fairly quickly. Overall, good taste for a poorly written recipe.

This was a very great recipe. I just love tiramisu, one of my favorite desserts. Because I didn't have Marsla on hand I used Bailey's Irish Cream, and it tasted so so flavorfull. My husband and my friends loved it. Very easy to make. I would recommend it to everyone.

This was a great recipe. I didnt have the problems others are saying about it being too thin. If you look at the recipe it does say 8 hours inactive time. Make sure to make the chocolate zabaglione and the filling a day before so that it is thick enough. It does need 32 ladyfingers like the others said. Other than that it is well worth the time it took to make it..

I have tried too many tiramisu recipes to count, and this one turned out -by far- the best. I'm generally a fan of the more traditional zabaglione, but I loved the decadence of the chocolate... And so did my fiance and the friends we had over for dinner. The recipe took some work, but the steps were pretty easy, and it was SO worth the time. Definitely will make this again.

I followed the recipe exactly and ended up with a runny mess of a marscapone mixture. there were about two extra cups of filling left over and the filling didn't have sufficient body to provide the desired layers. A time consuming mess -- I would not recommend this recipe.

This was the BEST I've ever tasted. I did make some modifications though. Based on the reviews. I did use more ladyfingers than suggested. I also couldn't find the brand Giada recommended, I had to work with Trader Joe's brand. These ladyfingers were super soft so I didn't even dunk the cookies for a second. But all in all, the tiramisu was fabulous. I had some saved for later and with each passing day, the flavors intensified and it was even more delicious the next day! You have to make this one if you are a chocolate lover.

User: Christina from Arlington, TX    User Rating:
This dessert was so rich and decadent. I have made Giada's tiramisu, which was great, but this one was better. The chocolate zabaglione was very thick and creamy. I used a silicone loaf pan, as I didn't have a metal one. Will definitely purchase one to make this dessert again. I had to put it in the freezer for a while to help the dessert set. I also had to use 32 ladyfingers, instead of the 24 that the recipe called for. This dessert was perfection!! My family enjoyed it.

Everyone loved this tasty treat although the presentation was a little sloppy due the zabaglione not setting even after overnight. Didn't have any Marsala so I used what I had on hand and that was Amaretto. Yum, I could just eat the zabaglione by itself! I also replaced 1/4 cup of the coffee mixture with Kahlua for a really kicked up dessert. Will try again to see if it will set properly.

I really thought this recipe was amazing!! It was great for a change, not the everyday normal dessert and it was very easy to make. My only suggestion is to not over soak the lady fingers or they tend to be a bit soggy. I absolutely loved the filling between the layers of the lady fingers. Very impressive in presentation also. Enjoy!!

This tiramisu is excellent! Yes, you need 32 ladyfingers but everything else should work out great! Someone mentioned how you can't fold the whipped cream into the marscapone but you can...just incorporate it gradually and remember to fold not stir. Also...I'm not a big fan of marsala so I just substituted milk that I flavored with a little chocolate coffee syrup. If you're pushed for time, make the zabaglione ahead of time and let it chill....the rest comes together in minutes...so easy, so delicious!

Great recipe! Prep time was a bit longer than 30 min. for me. Yes, you do need 32 lady fingers instead of the 24! Absolutely delicious, though! P.S. The strawberries are not for the tiramisu; they are for the zabaglione (if you are making it to eat just by itself), although they make a nice garnish! Please give this a try ~ you'l WOW all of your friends! :-)

poor instructions

User: MICHELLE from Franklin, TN    User Rating:
Probably a good dish (haven't served it yet) but the recipe is poorly written. No where does it explain where/how you are supposed to use the strawberries it calls for, and it states you need 24 ladyfingers (1 pkg) but actually calls for 32 in the recipe (necessitating an emergency run to the store to complete the recipe). Also, the prep time is more like 90 minutes than 30.

time consuming-worth it
06/06/2007 at 02:33pm
User: krista from goshen, CT    User Rating:
At the very top of the recipe I think it would have been nice for them to write "make the chocolate zabaglione first" I didn't and it would have been much easier on me. It also took 10-15 minutes before my egg mixture to thicken, not the 4 minutes that was listed in recipe. This is a time consuming recipe but very worth it. Everyone who tried it loved it.

User: Nicole from Gilberts, IL    User Rating:
This is a little more difficult that the "medium" rating they give but its amazing if you do it right. You have to let the marscapone cheese warm to room temp or you will have lumps in the cream. I make it without the fruit. Also she has you layer the cookies wrong when you start. You should do a layer of cream first then your first cookie row. You should end with the cookies on top so when you take it out of the loaf pan you can flip it easier with a plate and just take the cling wrap off and serve. It takes longer than 30 mins too!

This was the first Giada recipe that my family and I did not absolutely love. I followed the recipe to a 'T.' Our biggest complaint was that it was a little grainy. The Savoiardi were coated with sugar on one side. The soaking did not dissolve this. That, combined with the sugar that is added to the marscapone,(That doesn't dissolve because you are not heating it) made it gritty with the texture of the sugar. This was disappointing, to say the least.

This was fabulous!! The chocolate is a perfect addition to the espresso-laced dessert. True, it probably isn't the most well-written recipe, but keep trying--when it comes out right it is out of this world!! I was so afraid of oversoaking the ladyfingers that they ended up dry and I had to sort of "inject" more espresso into the ladyfingers. Then--perfection!!

Turns out to be delicious but I had some suggestions which may help you out. Make sure you get mascarpone that has higher water content. At first I bought 40% type and it was thick and pasty (like spackle). I ended up using a 54% type that was much smoother and easier to work with. I also used an 8x8 pan instead and arranged the tiramisu in a double layer. I didn't end up needing 2.5 cups of espresso, but rather just under 2 cups. Using an electric mixer for the zabaglione was also helpful to create a light and fluffy mixture. Finally, the packaging for my cheese was only in grams so remember that 100g = 3.5 oz. Tastes great overall!

This turned out really good!I didnt think it would turn out good with the store bought ladyfingers and was also concerned about the thin layer of sugar on them, but it turned out delicious and the sugar was not a big deal.I found that using 24ladyfingers turned out fine and sufficient (3 layers of ladyfingers, 2 layers of cream)and i like the fact that I only need to buy one packet of cookies. Making the zabiglione the night before made it a snap to whip up.Some people complained that theirs wernt light and fluffy, just make sure you use a big enough bowl, more surface area over simmering water, and dont be too strict on the minutes, just keep whipping until its thick and fluffy. The chocolate zabiglione was so good, i wanted to eat all of it, then added with the marscarpone, TO DIE FOR!! it was so good.I also didnt have marsala wine, but a bit of port did fine. Overall, i would definitely reccomend this recipe, its easy, while looking and tasting like you slaved away in the kitchen. I think it was easier to make because I watched the show.Giada may have used 8 egg yolks on the show, but follow this recipe because she has adapted it for the tiramisu.

This was a fantastic recipe! The recipe for the Zabaglione should read 8 egg yolks (see the link to it at the bottom of the page). I also made sure that the mascarpone cheese was at room temperature- it makes it easier to fold in. I stuck it in the freezer for a few hours (I had less than 6 hrs before guests arrived) and then transferred it to the fridge so it would retain its shape. Anyway, everyone LOVED it- they even said it's better than restaurant tiramisu. Thanks, Giada!

This dessert is incredible and has turned out every time I have made it. It has become a favorite among some of my friends--so much so that one of them had me show him how to make it. It is a bit time consuming, but not too difficult. Since I don't tend to have Marsala wine on hand, I use 2 teaspoons of dark rum instead. Also, I substitute 10 teaspoons of instant coffee with 2 1/2 cups of water for the espresso.

Just made this tonight. The only real flaw in the recipe is the whole "fold the whipped cream into the marscapone" part. Marscapone is a very stiff cheese--you need to whip it with some cream on its own or it will never incorporate into the whipped cream mixture. You could easily add 1/3 to 2/3 cup of whipping cream to the marscapone, and then add in the whipped cream/sugar mixture, and it would be perfect (and give you a bit more filling to work with). Also, it's important to let the coffee mixture cool completely before dunking in the ladyfingers--I put my first one in when it was hot and the thing almost completely dissolved. I also added some Tia Maria to the coffee mixture. (Didn't have Kahlua around). We shaved Scharffenberger milk chocolate over the top--it was absolutely wonderful!

In the recipe it states 6 oz of mascarpone cheese but in the show she says 8 oz of mascarpone cheese. (Which is the amount that comes in a container)...Also, the recipe states the 24 ladyfingers, which again, like everyone else's comments, you really need 32. I beat the Zabaglione for 10 minutes instead of the 4 after reading everyone else's comments. I lined the pan with plastic wrap like she did in the show, dipped the cookies VERY quickly (or they will fall a part) and continued the layering process, then put in the refrigerator over night. About an hour before serving it, I popped it into the freezer just in case. I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be runny and would come out in one piece. It came out just like Giada's in the show. MY FAMILY LOVED IT! A VERY BIG HIT!!

Great recipe - as usual. By the way - the strawberries are for the chocolate zabaglione if being served alone - not as part of the tiramisu.

This is the BEST TIRAMISU EVER!!!!

Im always looking up new things to make and on December 7th 2006 I was looking for a good recipe for dessert and this came up. I was looking for a recipe to impress a guy who was coming over the next night. So I made this and it was a hit! Now, making plans for valentines day I know that I have to pick up the ingredients for this so I can make it for the same guy. This is the most amazing tiramisu Ive ever had.

Wonderful

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a thicker consistency for the zabaglione?

Delicious! I thought it was a little more boozy than I would prefer and it took longer prep than stated, but the results were very good!

Great, Fantastic

I made this at my job for a weekend special. but I was kind of dissapointed it didn't really remind me of a tiramisu at all. it tasted more like a chocolate cake. next time I will increase the espresso content

this tiramisu rocks!

easy and delicious-i recommend making the zabione(sp) it's really simple-i used both brandy and amaretto-use the best quality chocolate(bittersweet) to shave on top!

Wonderful!

I made this dessert for my family's Christmas Eve dinner, as we were doing an Italian theme. I had always wanted to try to make tiramisu, as my hubby loves it, but I was afraid it wouldn't turn out right. I am happy to say that it turned out absolutely fabulous and got rave reviews from all. My husband gave me the greatest compliment, when he said it was "better than the Tiramisu at Maggiano's" (his favorite). I froze it and then let it thaw a few minutes before serving, which I would higly recommend. I don't think it would have set as well in the refrigerator. I used amaretto in mine, which tasted wonderful. Will definitely make this one again!

Not so great

It tasted alright, I suppose, but it lacked any authentic tiramisu taste or texture, I thought.
