Rock Solid French Toast!

No, I don't mean that the French Toast is hard as a rock. I mean that this is a superb recipe to start with if you have never made French Toast or are looking for new ways to improve your style. It has all the suggestions that ensure well cooked toast and is simple, quick and best of all expandable. You are giving the basics to make it any way you want it. Only thing I would change is portion size, lets get real, two pieces a person, your husband or son will be stealing it before it gets to the table!

Very good.

I like the baking step at the end. It really makes the french toast better while getting them all warm at once.

This was an excellent version of Egg Bread (french toast). My Daughter calls it egg bread. We tried it once according to the recipe and it was outstanding. The second time we tried it we cut a loaf of banana bread in half and then sliced it into sandwich bread sized pieces. Don't soak them too long or they'll fall apart, however, even the pieces are unbelievable!!

I didn't even have challah bread, so I used regular storebought wheat and this came out wonderfully! It's the best I've ever had! And preparing the egg mixture the night before makes it so easy to prepare in the morning!

Too much work without "my patience being rewarded." And another thing: I can't believe he did not add vanilla to this recipe! You can't have french toast without a little bit of vanilla, or even almond extract. I was a bit disapointed, even angry! How dare you, Alton.

It was very good, but needed a little something. So I would add a little nutmeg and cinnamon. Loved the way the toast did not get soggy. I would recommend this recipe. Family loved!

Not sweet enough

I used french bread and next time will try a sweeter bread. it was rich, but with only maple syrup, it was not quite sweet enough. The addition of a little strawberry preserves made it just perfect.

Quick and easy, but tastes slow and expensive!

Great french toast! I made it with 4-day-old italian bread and let it sit out overnight to get stale. the french toast turned out just right - like custard on the inside but with a crisp outside. I was only able to get 6 slices from the recipe so you might want to double it for serving more than 3 people. It is important to only use thick, hard bread and only soak in the custard for 20-30 seconds. I used a very large frying pan because it took a lot longer to cook than to soak and with a large pan you can cook more slices.

I used thick Texas Toast for this recipe. The French Toast came out thick, fluffy, but dense with the rich custard. My picky 9 year old gave me a "mmm, this is good." And that was without syrup.

Ho Hum French Toast

User: Claudette from Ocean Shores, WA    User Rating:
We prepared the recipe as directed, using homemade challah (which we have been making for our congregation for a number of years and get rave reviews on). The results were distinctly disappointing, which was doubly felt because of the loss of the challah we had used up. We felt that the recipe has nothing to recommend it and is not even as good as our regular old-fashioned french toast that we've been making for 40+ years. I'm afraid this one's a bust!

Perfect French Toast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Easy to prepare the night before. Easy to cook the morning of. Delicious! Thanks Alton! A couple of notes: The first time I made it, I forgot to set the bread out overnight. BIG mistake! The bread soaked up way too much of the custard and stayed soggy in the middle. You MUST set the slices out to dry out overnight, as Alton said. I add fresh grated nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla to my custard. That is what I'm used to and couldn't imagine eating French Toast without those in it! As for timing the 30 seconds per side, I set my stove timer to 10 minutes or so and watch for every 30 second mark to flip the bread. Not hard at all.

Bread Matters!!!!

User: Mark from Franklin, NC    User Rating:
If you use plain store bought white bread, OR if you use a better bread but slice it too thin, you will be disappointed in this recipe. I used texas toast (store bought) and the extra thick bread made a wonderful foundation for the custard. I double soaked the bread to account for the extra thickness (soak, rest, soak, rest), 15 seconds on the second soak. also added some vanilla to the custard mix. Best french toast I've ever MADE. (eaten better but was in a **** restaurant.)

User: Brenda from San Angelo, TX    User Rating:
I am guilty of creating soggy french toast time after time and did not know how to make it better. THIS recipe makes french toast that is crunchy on the outside and creamy-custardy on the inside. Absolutely perfect french toast. For the rest of my life, I promise to make french toast the way Mr. Brown makes his. Here are my recommended adjustments: I used sourdough bread and it worked great, I let it sit out for about 15 minutes (not all night). I also added cinnamon to my egg mixture, about 1/2 teaspoon. Everything else as recommended, and I topped it with a berry sauce & whipped cream. Berry sauce: 1 cup frozen mixed berries, 1 tbsp butter, 1 tbsp sugar - heat all ingredients over medium to low heat for 3-5 minutes. Top this on your french toast and swirl some whipped cream topping on both the french toast and berries....it's a masterpiece! I wish I could post a picture of my creation on here, it is beautiful. Enjoy folks.

Maybe I'm just not enough of a french toast expert....obviously a lot of people have liked this recipe, but it didn't taste different enough from less complicated recipes to make it worth the while. I will say that the end result was much heavier and richer, but if the taste isn't any better, why go through the trouble?

I saw this recipe on TV and thought "I can do that". I have never tried to make anything that I have seen on TV and was a little bit nervous about how it was going to turn out. I'll admit that I'm not a very good cook. I have about 10 sigature recipes that I have perfected throughout the years but my idea of french toast had always been sandwich bread dredged in milk, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg and a little bit of orange juice, simple. When I decided to make this recipe I liked that I could do the prep the night before. I paid the extra money for the "good bread" and my 5 year-old daughter helped me make the best french toast anyone in my family had ever tasted. It really hepled to have an extra set of hands in the kitchen since by the time you get going your pulling one batch out of the oven just in time for the next batch to go in. It was a hit! Great recipe! Try it, you won't regret it and you just may have a new family favorite, we do.

This recipe used more cream than I am used to using and I never used honey - I think it made all the difference. This was absolutey wonderful and I like being able to bake it so I don't have to watch it quite so closely. I also saved the egg mixture (refrigerated in air tight container) and used it again the next weekend.

This recipe was very fussy, kind of bland, and (maybe this was my fault) mussy. I follwed his directions to the T and made tripled the batter, but only 2/3 of the bread soaked up all of the batter. I've tried a lot of Alton Browns recipes and this is the only one I don't like. I also won't be making this one again.

I made mine with challah (left out overnight, as directed), 1 tbsp of honey, 1 tsp of vanilla, and 1/4 tsp each of cinnamon and nutmeg and the result was fantastic and welcome change of pace from my usual French Toast recipe (made with fresh whole grain bread, skim milk, and no honey or half and half). I can't say I'll use Alton's every time I make this dish in the future, but will certainly keep it in mind on special occasions when I am in the mood for an indulgence-- yum!!!!

User: Cheryl from Sarasota, FL    User Rating:
This is a great recipe for plain ole french toast. I really loved learning the method for cooking it; the texture comes out perfect everytime. I make the custard in the morning, because all the steps really do go by pretty fast. And, what is leftover gets saved for the next morning in a tupperware bowl. The flavour is great, but I would love to find ways to add more intense flavour to it though. Perhaps I'll sprinkle on some cinnamon before serving next time.

User: JR from Kuna, ID    User Rating:
I tried it and will likely be forever critical of restaurant style French toast. Keep in mind, that already firm bread does not need to be left out overnight. Also, dip for 30 secs max, or you will be fishing out soggy pieces. And, don't cook in margarine... your toast will either burn or just be soggy. Use butter, or as a last resort use a cooking spray. After you bake the toast, give it the ol' Emeril touch with some powdered sugar and BAM! ;-)

It's fast and easy. Turns out perfect, crisp and brown on the outside and creamy goodness in the middle. And to think I've wasted all these years eating dull, lifeless, and soggy french toast. Those who don't agree must not have made it right. Thanks Alton!

We love French Toast and I normally make a mean one myself by adding vanilla and a little sugar to my egg mixture BUT Alton did it again! This French Toast is AMAZING!!! A little more work than my personal recipe but WELL WORTH IT! Baking the toast afterwards really made a difference too. And salt, who would think to add salt to the mixture?! It worked really well. My husband even said it was the BEST French Toast he had ever had! Thanks Alton, you're the best!

If your family is used to eating 3 or 4 slices of regular bread dunked in egg/milk mixture and fried in a pan, they will be surprised to be full after only 1 or 2 slices of this. Very filling! Very yummy! I recommend not even putting butter on it. We had a week and a half old loaf of bakery french bread and it was stale completely through before slicing. Took a little longer to soak the pieces, but they cooked up deliciously! Thanks Alton for this awesome pain perdue recipe!

My family really enjoyed your French toast recipe! It puffed up while baking in the oven and the outside was crispy while the inside was nice and custardy. I added some cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Also, I let it bake longer than 5 minutes in the oven and served it with butter and maple syrup. The leftovers froze well and I just put them back into the oven to reheat and crisp back up as we needed them. A wonderful recipe to make ahead of time for those busy weekday mornings at 4am! My 16 year old son appreciates it!! I made a triple recipe, using 3 loaves of French bread. Thanks Alton for a great show! You always crack me up and make me laugh, :') Love the chicken on your kitchen counter. Inga, El Cajon, CA

Holy Moly! Easy and delicious. Everyone in my family from the one year old on up loves this stuff. It even refrigerates for a day. Making the custard mixture the night before and letting the bread "stale" up over night is essential to maximum French Toasty-ness.

That's what my wife said about this recipe... after she asked for more. I sliced Challa bread 1 to 1 1/4 inches thick and soaked each side 2-3 minutes then sprinkled a little cinnamon on each side. I also added 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla to the custard. Beautiful toasty brown on the outside then pop in the oven to finish the inside. My favorite topping is strawberries with chambord.

We have entertained with this breakfast and everyone was impressed!! I would recommend soaking the challah for a long time though, it really makes the toast creamier. And, I needed more half/half mixture than the recipe called for.

Make sure you follow the instructions preparing and on cooking that is KEY!!

As with most of Alton Brown's recipes, this one takes some thinking ahead. But, if you can plan a night ahead (to let the bread dry out and to make your custard), this is really simple, and VERY good. I would never call myself an accomplished cook, but this tasted like it was made by a pro. And, because you both fry and then bake the toast, this is perfect for a weekend morning with family visiting so you can feed everyone at once. We just loved it!

I made this french toast for my dad on Father's Day morning and he loved it! He said it was the best french toast he ever had. I served it with a ramikin of strawberry slices. My only advice is to make sure your slices are at least a 1/2 inch thick and if you let the custard sit in the refrigerator overnight (per Alton's recommendation), give it a quick stir because the honey tends to settle to the bottom. Thanks Mr. Brown! You're the best and I'm looking forward to your new show!
