This frosting was one of the simplest recipes I've ever used and turned out to be the best tasting as well. The whipped cream made it fluffy and rich but not too runny thus perfect for decorating cakes. I swear this frosting gave my cake the Victorian taste I was looking for.

OUTSTANDING!!

This icing is fantastic and so easy to make. I made it on a Thursday and frosted a "Fire Breathing Dragon" cake with it on Saturday. Just allow plenty of time for the icing to thaw - once it thawed I put it back in my mixer and whipped it up with a touch more heavy cream. Easy and tasted out of this world!!

Easy, but not stable

User: Laura from New York, NY    User Rating:
Great recipe if you need instant icing. Cons, very sugary sweet, and frosting appeared a little broken after I had added the cream (well, I used milk, this might not have helped). Piped well, but this frosting would not hold up to time well. Forget using it on a decorated cake or wedding cake that needs to sit for a few hours. If you have the time, make a french or italian buttercream, much smoother, shinier, and more stable. But, if you don't have the time, this recipe works.

So Good

This is an easy recipe if you are a first-time buttercream frosting maker, like I was when I made it! It took food coloring well. It was not too sweet (at least to me) but I did add a little more cream than it called for, to soften it up a bit. However, it was just a tad bit too soft in my decorator for my taste, but worked okay anyway.

super fast and easy

This was the first time I ever made my own frosting! It came out pretty good. The vanilla made the icing a little dingy, so next time I think I will use the clear vanilla. I also used half and half instead of whipping cream. I think it made the texture a little weird - not as smooth as I would like it to be. Either that, or because I don't have a stand mixer, only a hand mixer. The frosting was delicious. Not too sweet.

Good results

User: Judy from Cromwell, CT    User Rating:
I have made homemade frostings a few times with mixed results but this is the best recipe so far. Taking previous reviews into account, I added 1/4 tsp salt because I used unsalted butter and almond extract in place of vanilla. The consistency was alittle too soft for piping (probably too warm) but it spread nicely on cupcakes. I sprinkled toasted, slivered almonds on top, sprinkled some with shredded coconut and some with chocolate chips. They were a hit.

BIG Success!

it's sooo quick and easy to make i couldnt believe it! and it was sweet but not too sweet, it was perfect, betty crocker couldnt make a better frosting! i used enough canned whipped cream (Reddi Whip) to make it the consistency i wanted instead of using whipping cream and the results were perfect.

I made a double batch but substituted the whipping cream with milk and added cocoa powder and instant espresso powder. It was wonderful. Not super sweet. It was a great compliment to the espresso cake I made.

Perfect balance of confectioners sugar, butter, vanilla, and cream. I used half and half as I was out of whipping cream...and it turned out great.

Too sweet!!

Overall, a good buttercream frosting which piped well on my chocolate cupcakes. I thought it was too sweet so I added more cream to the frosting, which lightened it a bit and resulted in a fluffier frosting. A previous reviewer also did the same thing.

I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 b/c no-cook frosting just doesn't measure up taste and texture-wise to cooked, but this is as good as it gets!

I have tried a number of buttercream recipes lately, and this has been the winner so far in taste and for how easy it is to make. I haven't tried to pipe anything except simple lines with this recipe, but I plan on it.

Added Chocolate

User: dorothy from Williston, VT    User Rating:
I added 2.5 squares of melted chocolate to this and a little extra milk. It was creamy and light brown and delicious. It was just enough to cover a 9x13 sheet cake top though, so double the recipe if you're making a layer cake. It's a bit sweet, but oh so yummy. Not that sickly sweet store bought taste though. I licked the bowl clean!

This is a fantastic icing. It was perfect for decorating cupcakes and it didn't seem to sweet to anyone. My neices are very picky about icing and this one was a winner. I did add a bit more cream than the recipe stated though.

Good taste, and good for piping

It's hard to find a good buttercream recipe that both tastes good and has the right texture to decorate with - but this is it! I used to professionally decorate cakes, and I've found this recipe works better than any other I've tried when it comes to creating any type of piping on the sides. One note - use UNSALTED butter. I once made this with two sticks unsalted and one salted (it was all I had on hand). After adding the third salted stick the taste was completely ruined.

Good consistency. Pipes very well. A little on the sweet side -- I cut back the sugar by 1/3 and added a bit more whipping cream. You really have to double the recipe to get enough buttercream to decorate / cover a 9 inch round. Otherwise, will definitely use this recipe again!

The best quick buttercream

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
This is a great, simple, easy recipe. It's a great alternative to the time-consuming traditional buttercream, or to the unhealthy trans-fat-laden store bought variety. This recipe is different from other frosting recipes made from powdered sugar because it contains only about half the amount of sugar, and the four minute beating time gives it a great texture. The recipe does not specify whether to use unsalted butter. I did, and had to add a dash of salt to cut the sweetness a bit. I noticed that using milk or even water in place of the whipping cream does not really have any negative effects on the final product.

Easy and delicious

I made this twice in two weeks for my son's birthday celebrations. It was very easy to make and I got a ton of compliments on it. The second time, I didn't have whipping cream so I used 1% milk (that's all we had). It worked just fine, so you can do that to bring the fat content down just a bit!

This is awesome!!!!!!!!!

I just made this frosting and it is the best! It is so easy to make. The frosting does have a yellow color to it but I noticed that when I added the whipping cream, it turned white again. My husband tasted it and loved it to. This is going to be a favorite standby recipe whenever I made a cake. It is a tad sweet, I may cut back the sugar by 1/2 cup and see if that helps. Can't wait to eat the cake tomorrow! Thanks!

This icing was super simple. I took a previous review's tip and made 1.5x the amount and this was plenty to have super thick icing on an a 2-layer 9-inch round cake. I made the Classic White Cake (yellow variation) on this website and the finished product is SO SO good!

I followed this recipe to the letter, only I added a tablespoon of lemon juice. The citrus cut the overpoweringness of the sugar, and brought out creaminess of the butter and cream. And you can't taste the lemon juice at all!

This icing was easy to get to the proper consistency, tasted good and took color well. I would just be sure to remember that the butter will set up if you store the icing in the fridge, so be sure to give it time to come up closer to room temperature before trying to spread it.

It's a keeper!

Piped well, took color well, and tasted great. Able to go from firdge to decorating bag in seconds with a little kneading. The heat in my hands warmed the icing through the pastry bag perfectly in small batches. Ten seconds in the microwave made it spreadable in large batches. I would make some extra if you plan on decorating your cake. One drawback, it does have a distinctly butter yellow color.

Delicious frosting was easy to make and piped well through a pastry bag. It got a bit soft as buttercream does when you work it, so frequent refrigeration was needed of the unused portion. Even with refrigeration, it did not become hard or crusty. I used Land O'Lakes margerine instead of butter and half and half for the cream with super results.
