Results- a messy artificial tasting cake

User: Alice from Skowhegan, MN    User Rating:
Was certainly not what I was hoping for. The filling was overly sweet and the cake was obviously made from a mix. The frosting did not smooth out pretty. It is completely the wrong consistencey for decorating.

Poorly written

User: MICHELLE from Holly, MI    User Rating:
For me after reading and re-reading, emailing food-network then still tweeking the recipe as best I could, it was very tasty. My problem after reading recipe was that it leaves out a lot. If it was not for me watching the episode again I would not have known how many cake mixes to use for the bottom layer. No where in the recipe does it say you need 6 cake mixes...but in the episode she clearly states you need that many. I made this cake for my grandmother's 90th birthday but I only did two tiers, like I said I had to modify it the best I could to fit my situation and since the recipe was hard to follow and was not clear to everything you needed. Though things finally turned out ok im giving this a poor rating, I think recipe needs to be reviewed again and maybe made by someone that is not a professional chef.

not so tasty

There's not much flavor in this one. Made it for some friends getting married as a wedding shower cake. Very dry, no one liked the flavors, no one finished their slice. Sorry, no hit here.

User: DEBBIE from ROCHESTER, NY    User Rating:
before you go mixing 6 cake mixes, you better make sure your oven can accomodate the huge pan. the greatest attention to detail would be to hire a baker to make something special, as this was horrible, even for everyday home kitchens are not equipped to make a cake this big, that bottom layer is a bear to get fully cooked and even harder to get out of the pan, save yourself the aggrivation

I made this cake

It took forever to muddle through the directions. They didn't match what was on the show. To make a long story short, this turned out to be an expensive waste of food as it tasted horible and presented poorly also.

This was a terrible cake

I thought the extra touches would make it special. It didn't do a thing to make it taste like it was from scratch.

this recipe was HORRIBLE!! not only is everything from a box or a can, it is a very confusing recipe, and the outcome is not worth the effort. i highly suggest that for your wedding or special event, you choose a cake that was homemade, from scratch.

Definitely not a special occasion cake

Tasted artifically flavored all the way. Texture was dry. Frosting also tasted very artificial. I don't think this is a very good "every day" cake and it certainly isn't a cake to present at any type of special occasion.

I made this cake for my daughter's baby shower. The directions were very confusing. Were the amounts for two or three tiers? I had a difficult time putting the cake together and suggest that if you do three tiers you use dowls to support the second tier. The frosting was obviously canned-tasting. I was sad.

I made this for Granny's Birthday

We all voted no on the cake and frosting although we did like the lemon curd and raspberry jam. The cake has no real special quality and the frosting was certainly recognized as canned. No one was fooled to think it may be homemade. We won't repeat this recipe.

Don't serve subpar desserts to your guests. At least splurge for a real bakery cake.

This is does not represent the caliber of dessert

User: Hillary from Hillside, CA    User Rating:
I would consider serving at my wedding. Even on the TV it looked sloppy and poorly thought out. Special is not what I would call this cake. It is an ordinary, although large scaled, dessert that is not suitable for such a special occasion.

It tasted fine, but directions are not clear
06/10/2006 at 12:18pm
User: gail from nashotah, WI    User Rating:
I made a small cake, just the top part of this wedding cake, and it tasted great. But the directions here are very unclear for anyone that would like to make the whole wedding cake. If you didn't watch the program, you wouldn't know how many mixes to use for each layer. But because the show only demonstrated the top layer which also was used as the table centerpiece, that my be why only those directions are given. I believe the bottom layer needs 6 boxes of cake mix, and the middle layer needs 4, the top layer 3 boxes. So I only rated this 3 stars, mainly because the directions are poorly written here, but the cake really does taste good.

wow

even with the raspberry jam "filling" we just couldn't get past the essence of processed frosting from a can. And the directions were all wrong. Very hard to follow. Not for a wedding, that's for sure.

I decorated it with fresh flowers to try to make it look special. The canned frosting just doesn't finish off like a professional. I ended up serving it out of the kitchen with out letting anyone see it. I was trying to avoid embarrassing myself. But it was too late, because the cake itself was the monst humiliating part of the shindig. It was awful.

Box Cake & Canned Frosting? YUK!
01/13/2006 at 06:49pm
User: DERICE from Oklahoma City, OK    User Rating:
This is the worst. I haven't made, and won't make, this recipe for anyone -- particularly for a wedding or any special event. Why in the world would someone feed this drek to people they love? In addition, the directions outlined here are altogether lacking in clarity. And, although the recipe states that this is a "2-Tier Lemon Raspberry Cake", the cake actually made on the episode, and the cake shown in the photo, is a 3-tier cake. What's the deal? With so many gifted chefs, and so many great (and easy) recipes available, why is this show still on the air? I just don't get it. Anyone who feels the need to serve a box cake and canned frosting at a wedding needs more help than a food show can deliver.

My local Publix grocery store can make a cake to serve 40 people at less of a cost than buying all the stuff you need to make this. And, it isn't from box cake mix. You are better off doing that, and decorating with fresh flowers or whatever you want for that "Semi-Homemade" presentation.
