I used Paula's dumpling recipe to make blackberry dumplings for my husband. Both our mothers made them when we were kids growing up in the Midwest. The best part was not having to go out in the woods with the snakes, briars, and chiggers to pick the berriies. Frozen ones from the store worked out great.

It's no secret that Paula Dean Loves butter, but this recipe uses a suprisingly low amount. This is a dessert that can stand up for itself. No matter what your making for dinner this is a wonderful follow-up. The dumplings are moist and full of flavor, while not being overly sweet. The Blueberrys add a sweetness and lightness to this recipe that is hard to resist. When put together, the flavors burst in your mouth causing a most wonderful explosion on your taste buds. Without a doubt Paula Dean has delivered yet another recipe that many generations will love.

The blueberry dumplings were great. Easy to make, the dumplings were nice and fluffy I would add a little less water next time only because I like my sauce thicker but over all a winner in my house.

These were easy to make. The berries were delicious with the ice cream. My girls and I thought the dumplings were bland and tasted kind of odd with the sweet mixture. I don't know if adding cinnamon or something would add to it or not. I love Paula and her recipes. This wasn't bad just different.

Runny sauce and needs more dumplings

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I made this recipe w/ frozen blueberries and used the full 2 cups water. The end results was a very running sauce, few amount of dumplings (they did form nicely though), and kind of tough blueberries. FYI - On the show Paula tells you for the water you can use anywhere from 1-2 cups for the sauce; I think she used 1.5 cups. If I make it again, I will likely double the dumpling mixture (and add vanilla to it like someone else recommended), use fresh blueberries, and only use 1-1.5 cups of water.

I have made this several times now & have tried both fresh & frozen berries...it is absolutely fantastic! It is a great recipe to make for company because you get the benefit of serving a nice warm dessert without having to slave in the kitchen. And being from the Northeast, everyone was fascinated by the dumplings! Don't forget the vanilla ice cream! Thanks Paula!

User: Jessica from Virginia Beach, VA    User Rating:
These were fabulous, quick & easy!! I find the blueberries were watery when they were piping hot, but letting the dish cool down about half an hour prior to serving helped thicken it up without the need of cornstarch. It made a lot- we're still eating leftovers on pancakes or over some ice cream!

I made this recipe for my husband for Father's Day, and believe me it was a verry very big hit. Instead of using blueberries, I used fresh dewberries, there were not enough dumplings but with the exception of one bowl, he ate all of it by himself, and declared it one of my better recipes that I have tried. Will make it again using (blue- berries),and will add more dumplings thanks for such a great recipe.

User: Michelle from Aliso Viejo, CA    User Rating:
This recipe was extremely to prepare. The results were absolutely magnificant! The dish came out looking exactly as it did as prepared on television. The dumplings were cooked to perfection, and the fruit was a wonderful combination of sweet and tart. I do not recommend replacing the sugar in this recipe with any kind of low-cal sweetener; the results are not the same at all. It is absolutely delicious served hot and topped with simple vanilla ice cream.

User: Amanda from Henderson, NV    User Rating:
What's so cool about this recipe is...it's incredibly simple, yet it's unique, and of course delicious. The blueberries turn into a sweet yummy goodness, and the dumplings are a little cake like, very soft, not too sweet, and the perfect combo with the blueberries. Kind of like blueberry cobbler, or blueberry pie without the crust. And yes, it's awesome with the vanilla ice cream on top. But even without it, it's awesome.

I have made this dish, once following the recipe exactly. I was really good, however just alittle to sweet for me and my family. So the second time I made it, I made it with Strawberries instead of blueberries, and I reduced the sugar to 1 cup. The strawberries turned out just as good as the blueberries, but they were alittle less sweet which is what I wanted. My husband and daugter went nuts over them. I will be telling my friends and family about this one! And it's SOOO EASY to make!!!! Anyway, Thanks Paula. You'v done it again!!! I was also thinking about trying the same recipe and use peaches. Thanks again, Kathie

This is a great recipe and everyone that i have made it for has loved with but there is one thing that can be done to the original recipe that makes it 10x better. .. Substitute the blueberries for blackberries. Blueberries seem to come out too tart and they also seems to keep the dumplings from cooking properly. When i made the subsitution the dumplings were perfect and the taste enhanced but of course the final decision is up to you.

I made your Blueberry Dumplings and my family went crazy over them. I've made several of your recipes and everyone reminded me of my grandma's southern cooking. She taught me to love cooking and doing it the good ole southern way is always the best. Thanks Paula

I just made this recipe and the taste was good. My dumplings did not seem to turn out right though....Paula, I swear I did not touch the lid!! I guess I was expecting a more firmer texture, and sweeter taste to them. The contrast between the hot blueberry mixture and cold vanilla ice cream was excellent! All in all, this was a very good recipe!

Awesome!

We enjoyed the blueberry dumplings the other night with vanilla ice cream. Delicious and easy! I was tempted to lift the lid and see the dumplings, but I was good and didn't! There is a lot of liquid left over. Next time I will store the liquid and use it to pour over pancakes.

This was good...

I loved this recipe! I actually used strawberries instead of blueberries and I added a little cinnamon to the dumpling dough. It turned out great! We also used the reserved liquid over angel food cake the next day. Thanks Paula, wonderful as always!!

This recipe was fabulous and so easy. Tasted kind of like a blueberry cobbler, but so simple to make. I really like recipes that you can leave alone, so this one fit the bill. I was able to make dinner with dessert for once!

Your receipe reminds me of the dumplings that my mother made for so many people every year. We lost her last year just about this time and this is just a another sweet memory of all those precious things that she did for so many loved ones without ever being asked she just did it out of God's love to others. May God continue to bless you and yours. Cynthia O'Steen, High Springs, Florida

This recipe sounded so much like my recipe for Cherry Soup my Grandmother use to make that I had to try it right away. Instead of blueberries try the cherries or blackberries, you won't be sorry.

I saw it on Paula's show this morning and since I was having my family over for dinner- I made it and it was great. Since some people in my family are watching their sugars I did not use the sugar- I used the exact amount of splenda whenever it called for sugar, and I used skim milk. I also used Blue Bunny - Carb Freedom Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. Everyone went wild. They couldn't believe how excellent it tasted. Again- Thank you Paula- everyone always loves your receipes. You always make me look good.

i made these the other night with alot of anticipation. paula's recipes are always yummy. i must have done something wrong because the blueberry mixture was really thin, it never thickened. do not know if it was suppose to. but it was still yummy. my mom liked it alot and my husband too. someone let me know if it is suppose to thicken after cooking.
