This was my first time having hoisin sauce, and I did not care for it at all. My husband (who is normally a carbaholic) did eat it and enjoy it... so I am going to try it again, and sub something else for the hoisin. Everything else about the recipe was great!

Very tastey...

We LOVED this recipe for lettuce wraps. I added some honey to the chicken after cooking for an added sweetness. The hoisen sauce was so tasty. My husband loved it so much he said it was better than our favorite chinese restaraunt's lettuce wraps. Wow, what a compliment! Try it and you won't be disappointed! Yummo!

User: Suzy from Granby, CT    User Rating:
Loved the looks and ease of this recipe when I saw the show. Waited a week to actually make it and was very disappointed. I can't put my finger on it other than the flavors just didn't blend for me. I love hoisin and use it often so it wasn't that. Loved ginger and garlic so it wasn't that. I just felt that something was lacking here and the flavors didn't gel for me.

This recipe is a keeper!!! After reading the reviews, I cut the orange zest by a little more than half. I also went easier on the grated ginger. I added chopped green bell pepper along with the red. I didn't have hoisin sauce, so I subbed with about 2/3 cup of Teriyaki sauce. I also used Bibb lettuce instead of iceberg. One more thing - I added a little crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat (not too much). The result was AWESOME! My family LOVED it, and requested that I make this again very soon! I am thrilled with this recipe because it is very Weight Watcher friendly! DELICIOUS & HEALTHY!

I was trying to replicate my favorite lettuce wraps from PF Chang's, so I changed a few things. I used ground turkey instead of chicken tenders, skipped the orange, added more complexity to the sauce, and had cilantro, basil and lime wedges on the plate for people to add to the wraps. This is what I added to the hoisin sauce: 5 tsp sweet chili sauce, 2 tsp sesame oil, 1 TBSP sherry, 2 TBSP rice vinegar, 3 TBSP oyster sauce, and juice from half a lime. I think this made them much tastier. They were unbelievably delicious!! A keeper for company.

Delighted to find a lettuce wrap receipe as we love the ones at PF Changs Restaurant. Although I could tell this was a little different, I read the reviews and decided to try a variation on a theme. The orange zest was overpowering and then to squeeze the orange wedge completely changed what I think would have been a good receipe. I think I will try it again and leave out the whole orange thing.

This recipe is good but a little too bland for my taste. After tasting it, I added four or five splashes of soy sauce, a little more salt, a few shakes of crushed red pepper and some sliced almonds for more texture. Much better. Overall, a nice meal that is pretty low-carb. But remember, Hoison sauce is filled with sugar.

This recipe is excellent and very easy once you get past all the chopping!! With a few minor alterations it turned out as good as any wraps you can get in a restaurant. I omitted the orange zest altogether and added some chili flakes and a little bit of chili sauce. Great if you like a little heat. I also found the sauce to be a little runny for my taste so I dissolved a little cornstarch (flour would work too) in soy sauce and added it. It thickened right up!

I liked this a lot, and decided to bump it up to 5 stars because of the speed of the recipe! Of course Rachael's dishes are always quicky, but I thought this would take longer than it did. Also, it's versatile--the flavors are yummy as is, or you can vary the seasoning to get a flavor you want. And you could eat the chicken as is with rice, in the lettuce wraps, in a tortilla or other wrap....however you want!

User: NADINE from Herndon, VA    User Rating:
I made this for my family this week and it was great. Even my boys--6 and 10--really like it. It only took 10-15 minutes to put together. I will make this again and again. I substituted zucchini for the pepper and I added a little toasted pinenuts since I only had a little bit of leftover water chestnuts--for the crunch. I also didn't have any fresh ginger so I used ground. Also, we didn't bother with the lettuce this time--but I know my boys will think it's fun.

This is a fantastic recipe! Not only is it easy to make, but it rivals the chicken lettuce wraps at my favorite Asian resturaunt! I'm not the biggest bell pepper fan, so I didnt add those and the recipe still tasted great. The only thing I added, is to have soy sauce and wasabi to mix in the soy sauce for an added 'kick', as they do at my favorite resturaunt. Just drizzle it over the mixture after you have placed it in the lettuce. Wrap it up and chow down! Awesome!

I added sweet red chili sauce, oyster sauce, lemon juice and rice vinegar. I also added cut up canned baby corn in with the water chestnuts. Instead of wrapping in iceburg lettuce, I wrapped it in spinach leaves for more vitamins. I would make a variation of this recipe again.

I don't like watercrest chestnuts so intead I added shredded carrot and brocolli flourets, finely chopped. I love this dish, they serve it at P.F Chengs (which they don't have in the northeast) and other chain chinese places. I love Rachel but her recipes aren't 30 min. meals for the average person. It takes me 30 min. just to chop the ingredients.

This recipe is so good!!!!!!! Be sure and have all your ingredients chopped and ready to add to skillet, because the cook time is very fast. The only things I changed were that I used an extra 1 or 2 tablespoons of hoisin sauce, and I squeezed the juice from about 1/4 the orange directly into the skillet before serving. Delicious!!!!!!

This recipe was excellent. I made it with ground turkey breast, and omitted the orange zest based on other recommendations. I love how this recipe can remain low carb and waste friendly, but can always be served over rice for those in the family who are lucky enough to not have to care. :) This is a keeper.

I'd add half a star if I could. The recipe was ok - but not a favourite. There are a lot of ingredients, so I found the prep time took a little longer than Rachel's recipes usually take. Flavours are nice, but I wasn't really fond of the orange zest and would skip it if I made this again. Once prepared, it heats up well - so if its prepared ahead of time, it would be a quick, light and healthy summer meal.

Thanks, Rachel!

I knew when I saw this episode that my husband would love them. :) So, today I made them for lunch; I never follow a recipe EXACTLY, though. I didn't do the pepper, but added some scallion and celery, soy, LOTS of ginger, and sesame oil. They were a HUGE hit - he told me I could do them really often. :D Oh, I also julienned some cucumber, grated some carrot, and had some bean sprouts for him to add. They're going to be a staple here. :)

Yummy!

I added bell peppers, grated carrots, and a little bit of garlic chili sauce. I omitted the orange zest because I didn't think I'd like the flavor. I also didn't have any chestnuts on hand. It was really good, full of flavor and I'm really glad there's a new way for me to use hosin sauce. I think it would also be good with white rice.

I love this recipe and it's very simple to make, but requires a decent amount of prep time. With all the fine chopping of chicken, garlic, and veggies, and peeling and grating ginger, I found it took a lot longer to put together than expected. A great dish over rice and leftovers really hold up well.

Love this meal. I'm making it for a family visiting my family. Once you've played with other Oriental sauces and ingredients, you can jazz it up, too. The suggestion to use sesame oil and rice vinegar is good. Also, some chili paste give it some spice. Hoisin is not spicy, more sweet. OH, I forgot. I used ground chicken thanks to the ground turkey suggestion here. I really don't like how dry sauteed chix can be. The ground chicken is juicier cooked on a high heat, I think anyway.

and he's the picky eater. I used carrots instead of mushrooms (husband does not like mushroom.) I think it had too much orange flavor, but perhaps that was because I was using something sweet (carrot) in place of the mushroom. The husband helped make this (always a plus!) and he gobbled it up. I would eat it again, but it was too orangy for me.

I substiuted chik'n (veggie protein) strips for the chicken for a wonderful vegetarian meal! Because the chik'n strips are already seasoned, you can skip the salt & pepper. I also agree with other reviews here, forget about the orange zest...it just takes over...and not in a good way.

It boggles my mind that the Food Network continues to put this fraud and fake on the air.

I loved it when I came across this recipe. I have never been able to eat lettuce wraps at restaurants because I am allergic to water chestnuts and they premake the mix and cant remove them. I made this recipe by following the directions, but I seasoned the chicken breast with a little garlic salt and pepper and I coated the meat with a little hot chili oil. I also duplicated PF Chang's lettuce wrap sauce by mixing Chinese mustard, hot chili paste, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar. It was wonderful! I would advise to either omit or use the orange zest sparingly because it can overpower the dish. I can't wait to make this for my friends. They are going to love it.

Thank you for this recipe, Rachel! These taste exactly like a local family-owned upscale chinese restaurant makes. My husband and I love them, and now I can make them at home! I was happy to discover the hoisen sauce, which must be the same type of sauce they use at the restaurant. This recipe is in my cookbook and I've probably already made it 10 times. I add toasted pinenuts (the restaurant-version has them) and it adds even more delicious taste and a slight nutty flavor. We also like to use more hoisen sauce mixed with a little sweet chili sauce spooned over the top of the lettuce wraps. These are 10+ stars

There's lots of chopping going on but, otherwise it's pretty easy. My boyfriend and son liked it. I loved the shiitake flavor but, the hoisin wasn't enough. The taste of the sauce was flat. Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions of what to add but, will experiment with maybe a sweeter sauce in addition to hoisin. Char Siu sauce? Very fun meal though to have with kids.

I would actually give this 3 and a half stars. I liked the texture, and the flavor was good too. Dried shiitakes would give more flavor. I wasn't that fond of the orange zest--too fruity. This was much better than the shrimp and scallops with bacon, although it took me about an hour to do both dishes (I even prechopped the bell pepper and water chestnuts!)

I often have poor results with 30min meals, which is a shame because I love the show. This was the exception. Make sure you have everything ready to go before you start to cook bc it goes really fast. Take the advice of the other reviewers. I added to the hoisin lemon, tabasco, chili sauce, rice wine vinegar, toasted sesame oil, and some crushed red peppers, which made a HUGE improvement to the sauce. Skip the orange zest. Add some peanuts to the wraps with a bit of lemon juice = HEAVEN! Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
