Freakin awesome! I know that's not that helpful but I loved the way it turned out. I really like the fact that I made my own sause instead of using something from a bottle.

Nice flavor

This whole recipe is about the sauce. The steak is good, if you can find flat-iron, but it's grilled just like any other steak. The sauce, however is a bit high-maintenance for what you end up with. It makes A LOT so you may consider cutting the recipe down to half. It's definitely something worth trying but not sure I'll enter it into the "rotation."

The was an easy, delicious and beautiful meal. I was not able to find Flat Iron or Tri-Tip steak so I used Boneless Sirloin. I served with Bobby Flay's Cauliflower Goat Cheese Gratin.

I made this for my wife and a buddy. They loved it! I did too but I felt I needed more garlic. It was very simple to through together. The hardest part was finding flat iron steak in Dothan, AL. Here they call it top blade steak. You should try this at least once. Your family will ask for it again! Grant.

Outstanding Taste!

Giada does it again! The salt, pepper and olive oil was all the steak needed for seasoning. The sauce was as tasty as can be! As for the comments about "too strong" and "wine taste"-that's to be expected since they are the main ingrediants in this dish. As for "wasn't bad or anything" this sauce was as far away from mediocre-as it could be. (My daughter said her mouth was watering even after finishing the meal.) Sounds like anonymous was too lazy to take the time to do it right- and scorched it.(burned alcohol taste?) Anyways, don't be impatient and your masterpiece will turn out wonderful. Here's to all the aspiring cooks out there thanks to the FOOD NETWORK and all the people that are eating better these days! Salute!

Definitely a Must Try - made it my own!

This sauce is so delicious! I used a pretty nice bottle of Cabernet Sovereign and I think that was the key. The sauce is perfect for dipping with french bread-- it's that good. I definitely recommend.

I came across this recipe when I was cooking a different cut of steak and was looking for a simple sauce to jazz things up. The sauce went over very well with my husband who declared it was his new favorite steak sauce and that he couldn't imagine steak without it. I tried it with a Flat Iron Steak as well, and it was just as tasty.

Great Steak, Strong Sauce
04/19/2007 at 03:32pm
User: Sara from Glen Allen, VA    User Rating:
I really like Flat Iron steaks and this is one of the first recipes I used one in. The steak by itself was great, but the sauce was to strong. I think it was the tomato paste. A simple red wine reduction would have been better.

You have to have a taste for it.
03/29/2007 at 11:04pm
User: JANET from Lancaster, TX    User Rating:
Tomato paste too over-powering. However it did taste better after sitting for several hours. I would suggest that you try it out first prior to first time usage on guest. I would also consider drastically lowering the amount of tomato paste.

Flat Iron Busy

User: Will from Tempe, AZ    User Rating:
We found the recipe to be easy to understand and easy to do. We served it with homemade mac-n-cheese and broccoli. Good meal! But with the grill outside and the stove inside it's a meal more easily prepared by two. Also we found the sauce, though maybe authentic, a little acidic. A pinch of sugar may have helped cut that.

wasn't bad or anything

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
This wasn't bad or anything... and steak was actually pretty good but the sauce was INCREDIBLY mediocre. I couldn't taste anything but the burn from the alcohol-totally lacking flavor. I will definately not make this again with all the incredible other steak recipes out there. Frankly, I would prefer A1 steak sauce.

Very good but a lot of work
03/22/2007 at 04:12pm
User: MEGHAN from Lapeer, MI    User Rating:
I am not a fan of red wine personally and did not much care for the sauce, that said however the 4 others I served it to were absolutly wild about it, including my 2 year old who ignored her favorite (broccali) asking repeatedly for sauce. I will say when making the sauce make sure you have a decent sized strainer because it can be a nightmare with the finer ones. It I were to do this again I would use cheese cloth instead though. Also a word of caution, the thickness of the steak determines the cooktime so don't pay too much attention to Giada's 5 minute suggestion. I had to cook the steaks a good 8 minutes per side (I had to recook them actually after cutting them open to see that after 5 minutes they were still raw). As a side I agree that the Parmesean Smashed Potatoes are a good match, although I would add a little sour cream to Giada's receipe. Over all I got rave reviews from all eaters so I'd say definatly a meal to impress.

Great job on this one, I like to cook the Flat Iron Steaks on a cast iron skillet to get a nice sear to them then I made the red wine sauce and instead of straining it I used a hand blender to give the sauce more texture and it was so so good thank you for this great recipe

User: Cindy from Vernon, CT    User Rating:
I used a different cut of meat (london broil), due to a poor selection of flat iron steaks, but the taste was superb with the sauce. My only recomendation would be to use a decent dry red, nothing too expensive, you will use 3/4 of a bottle in the sauce, but something you want to taste on your plate.

The sauce took a long while to reduce and the steak used (NY Strip, I think?) was a bit tough. I think I may have cut against the grain. Despite the mishaps, I am not quite ready to give up on this recipe. I think my dissatisfaction stems more from user error. I would be willing to try again, when more time is available to allow the sauce to reduce properly. And this time I'll let my boyfriend handle the grilling of the steaks.

User: Jennica from Pullman, WA    User Rating:
This is a fantastic recipe all around. I've made this wine sauce 4 times now, in the past 2 weeks! It's so good I make it just to dip my bread into because it's so flavorful. It can easily overpower the meat, so keep that in mind (buy cheap meat or just a loaf of bread). It's also tremendously easy to make, fast, makes great leftovers, and it's cheap because you can find a great bottle of wine (like Banrock Station or the Little Penguin Merlots) for under $5. Make this sauce, you will love it!

This was an excellent recipe. Definitely delish! I am unable to find the same cuts of beef here in Holland as we have in the U.S. So I must substitute alot. This time I chose nice thick ribeyes. I first marinaded the steaks with salt, pepper, garlic powder and a bit of olive oil. I let them set about 20minutes before grilling. Meanwhile I made the sauce. The sauce is fantastic! It was easy and the flavors were awesome. This is definitely a 'keeper' recipe. A good recipe for guest. Thank you Giada for another lovely recipe.

Our family really liked this sauce. I was not able find flat iron steak in my area so we used tri-tip. It was excellent! I froze the left over sauce for another meal. Not sure how it will freeze but I'll soon find out and let you all know!

I made this one night and my 14 year old son keeps asking "When are you going to make that steak with the red sauce again". At my local HEB supermarket they will cut flat iron steaks for me but I found that they can be found in the meat case labled "Mock Tenderloin".

completely delicious. this recipe is expensive and time consuming, but worth every bit of the effort for a special occasion. i couldn't find the tri tip steak giada recommends, but new york strip worked well. it is also a great use of a stove-top grill pan.

Great Sauce

I made the red wine sauce (very easy) and used it on rib eye steak. Delicious. Guests really liked it.

Does not mask steak flavor--enhances it!

Unlike A1 and other overpowering sauces, this sauce is a perfect complement to the flavor of the meat. It is easy to make, though the straining part can be a little tedious and messy without exactly the right equipment!

this might get a ring on my finger

i have never cooked a day in my life...except cereal and the occasional pop-tart. i didn't want my boyfriend to think me completely undomesticated so i attempted this recipe...it was so easy and delicious...my boyfriend loved it, my sister said it was the best sauce she ever had...only thing was i couldn't find the flat-iron or tri-tip steak so i used skirt steak instead.
