I brought this to a family gathering. I figured my aunts and uncles might try it, but my brother and I (the vegetarians) would be the only ones eating them. *Everyone* liked them. The as$embly and cooking took a while, especially since I only have a small steamer, but it was well worth it.

good basic wonton

I consider this more of a wonton than a dumpling. Anyways, This is a great recipe that is very flixible, you can add meat or seafood if you like instead of tofu. When folding the wonton in half, its better to use a tsp of corn starch diluted in a few tbs of water as a "glue" between the fold. Also, boiling them in a deep pot of water is easier and quicker than steaming them. To realy enhance the flavor, double the sesame oil, but instead of regular sesame oil, use a chili infused sesame oil from a japanse brand/origin such as the Eden brand. Enjoy yet another good recipe by AB!

Good, but now what.

I loved this recipe. MY only problem is... what do I do with all my leftovers? Do these freeze and reheat well? I will definately do this for a party, though. Thanks, AB. This is my first try with both wontons AND with tofu. It won't be my last.

Delicious!

Even those not fond of tofu should try this dish. For my first time making dumplings I thought this recipe was not difficult. Yum.

This is a must try recipe. I've made it twice so far and the only important thing is to saute the mixture together. I sauteed everything except for the green onions, mixed the sauce- dumped it in, mixed in the egg and that was it. I made the whole batch and all the dumplings were eaten in one sitting between four of us!

good

man, this was so friggin good. i forgot to add in the sesame oil when i made this, but it still tasted completly delicious. the wonton wrappers were easy to fold, so it's really not too difficult a recipe to make at all. the next party i have will showcase these as it's main appetizer for certain, and my finicky husband and son liked them as well.

Way to go

These were great, tried half steamed and half fried/steamed as pot stickers, my family prefered them fried and steamed. Will make again!

Such a crowd pleaser

Every year I use this recipe to make veggie potstickers (look at his potsticker recipe for info on cooking those) for a huge group of my friends. It's fun to sit around the table with a few friends packing the wonton shells with the AMAZING filling, you'll be surprised how quickly you make a 100. Also, you can use the leftover filling as a good start to fried rice.

really really good

My husband hates tofu, and this is the first time he loved it. we had noleft overs. A good idea is to let the mixture marinate for a bit before filling the wanton skins

This did take FOREVER to make, but I was committed. I think next time I'll make the filling in advance. These dumplings are simply to die for! I will buy a steamer just for this purpose because I had to steam them in little batches. Also, don't forget to set the uncooked dumplings on a paper towel or wax paper before steaming or they will stick to whatever they're resting on! Delicious. Thanks Alton!

Totally love this recipe. I did leave out the red bell pepper though, because I guess I didn't feel it was necessary, and it still turned out great...does take time to make, but I just made the ingredients ahead of time, and then added the cilantro and egg before I was ready to put them in the wonton wraps. Ten minutes in my steamer, and the results were great.

Very Good

These are superb in chicken broth (won ton soup) or just on their own. I used water chestnuts instead of carrots, that worked. I found you can freeze them unsteamed, them steam the frozen ones for 10 minutes - they come out great.

kitchen helpers needed

there was more work involved with these little guys than I had bargained for. If I had a prep-chef on hand (or at least a dumpling helper to stuff, chop, or steam as I went along) it would have been much easier. However, they were tasty little guys, and a huge hit at my dinner party. Just not worth the time, in my opinion, if making large quantities.

Time consuming...

These are extrememly time-consuming, but excellent. The only problem was that the filling made way more than I could use with one package of wonton wrappers, and it came out watery. It might be may fault though: How many wonton skins are there in a package? Did I press the tofu enough? Next time, I think I'm going to saute the tofu first to expel some of the water.

This is so easy to make & very nutritous. You can even make your own wantons. Easy to make & freeze to be steamed as & when you need them.

slightly dissapointed

these were really simple to prepare, and contrary to what some others have written, are not expensive at all. i had most of the ingredients (all but the scallion and wrappers) right in my fridge! even though i enjoy tofu, i thought these lacked flavor and were underseasoned. after all, tofu needs a lot of flavor to mask its bland taste. don't think i'll make this specific recipe again, though. perhaps boiling would have been a better option than steaming.

godly!

YET ANOTHER WONDEFUL RECIPE!

OH MY GOSH!!! YET ANOTHER WONDERFUL RECIPE FROM ALTON! I will never order steamed dumplings from a Chinese restaurant again! These are even better than those I've had from a restaurant. It does take a while but it is so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o worth it. Only one suggestion: perhaps a recipe for the sauce Chinese restaurants serve with the dumplings (I tried mixing some light soy sauce with some honey and it was close).

Will make again... the right way

I was lacking a LOT of the ingredients, so I had to make a lot of substitutions. In the end it turned out not as flavorful as I would've hoped, but I'm positive it will taste better when I do it right. This is the third time I've made dumplings, so I'm fairly used to making them. Hence, it took me no time at all to make these. Also, while they're good by themselves, they do need some sauce to add some flavor. Just make a simple ginger sauce - very good.

Not bad, but a little heavy on the pepper

I thought this was good, but it has too much black pepper for my taste. (My husband, who likes things spicer thought it was fine). I'd like to try it again using Chinese flower pepper instead of black pepper, and possibly substituting thinner shu mai skins for the wonton skins.
