i very much enjoyed this recipe. however, i made a lot of substitutions: i omitted the cloves, i melted semi-sweet chocolate instead of bittersweet (for which i decreased the amount of sugar) and i didn't have white chocolate, so i put in dark chocolate. they were very chocolatey and enjoyable. now i'm going to use them for mint chocolate ice cream sandwiches!

I liked the cookies alright, but I really don't care for cloves in my chocolate cookies. I was reluctant to follow that part of the recipe, but I thought maybe it would bring out more chocolate flavor and not be noticed. I was wrong. I'm not a fan of spice/chocolate cookies!

yum!

Very good addition to our Christmas cookies. These cookies come out thick and moist, cake-like. The clove flavor really comes through in every bite and is delicious!

I have not made the cookie yet.But I'm leaving out the clove (not A fan of clove)But I agree with the person who said why doesn't the picture come up with the recipe so it can be printed with it .What I do is print the recipe then go back and print the picture. It would be alot easier if they just put the picture with the recipe for us.

I brought these cookies to my in-laws around Christmas time. I found that the men didn't care for them nearly as much as the women did. I will definatly be making these again

These cookies were awful. The cloves were overpowering. If you make this recipe definitely leave out the clove.

This cookie is so soft and chewy when it comes out of the oven. It just melts in your mouth. Make sure to store in air tight containers.

I substituted the cloves for cinnamon due to what others had stated in their reviews, and I am glad I did this. These cookies didn't turn out how I was expecting. They are okay, a little to much chocolate for me, and I LOVE chocolate. I probably will not make them again, although they were pretty easy.

Always a hit!

I've taken these to several different functions and even when I left them in the oven a couple minutes too long, they still came out great! I don't bake often (Read: at all) and I can handle these just fine.

These cookies were my first cookies that I ever made from scratch, they have been a big hit! I've sent them to school with my first grader at his holiday party and I got lots of rave reviews. Before making them I was afraid they would be too chocolatey, but they are perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about this recipe.

Not good...

Made this recipe tonight and I don't know if it was the cloves or something else but I didn't care for them and neither did my husband. Now I'm stuck with these cookies! Oh well, he can bring them to the office and someone will eat them...

Some of my friends absolutely loved these and others weren't huge fans. The clove really brought on a different taste and next time I think I'll leave the clove out entirely. Also, you really need to watch these when they're baking because they do get really hard and dry out quickly. I took them out of the oven when they were still pretty soft in the middle and they were perfect - even 3 days later!

Excellant!!

I made these cookies last week and I really love the mild taste of the cloves it really makes the chocolate flavor stand out. My husband took some to work with him and some of the GUYS noticed he had homemade cookies. He told them if they could guess the spice they could have one, none of them did but I think he only got one cookie for himself anyway everyone loved them.

I've made this recipe several times and no one's getting tired of them. They are decadent! I made them once with peanut butter chips and no cloves, but they weren't as absolutely perfect as the original recipe.

These cookies sounded amazing, but after gathering all the vaiours ingredients and slaving over the preparation they quick dried out and cooked very quickly. Could have been great, but simply ended up average at best.

Because I'm not crazy about the flavor of cloves, (but I do love the fragrance) I substituted cinnamon in this recipe. They are easy to prepare & quite delicious!

These cookies are great! So easy to make and absolutely delicious! The only thing I am a just a little unsure about is the spice the recipe calls for...it's a little strong but doesn't take away from the overall yumminess of the cookie! Try this recipe!

I would make this cookie again, but with less clove or maybe none at all.

Use less cloves...
12/20/2004 at 02:39pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I agree that if I make this recipe again, I would use 1/8 tsp cloves instead of 1/4 tsp. I found the clove flavor to be a bit overpowering. I wouldn't leave out the cloves completely, unless I were going to add some cocoa powder or something to give the dough more flavor. Even cinnamon might be better than clove, then the cookies would taste like Mexican chocolate. Of course, the cookies were still good despite having a bit too much clove. They would just be even better with less clove. Ina Garten has a great recipe for chocolate white chocolate chip cookes.....

Too much clove
12/17/2004 at 10:26am
User: JENNIFER from Arlington, VA    User Rating:
I think there is too much clove in this recipe and it gives the cookie a distinct clove taste as opposed to a rich chocolate taste. When I first tried this cookie it didn't taste how I expected, so in the future I will either reduce the amount of clove or leave it out. These cookies were not bad, they just weren't what I had expected.

These cookies are just delicious. My friends loved them too, and asked for the recipe. Thanks . I do have a comment about printing out the recipes for all the recipes, why can't we get the photo of the cookies to print with the recipe. I do like to have a photo when I can, as it gives you a visual of the product one is making. Thank You
