This was great. Everyone just loved it!! I have to say, though, that if I hadn't seen Paula make this on TV, I'm not sure I would have attempted it. But now, I will make it again and again. It is definitely relatively easy.

Read Corrected Review-- 2 1/2 oz NOT Cups

User: BRITT from Lorton, VA    User Rating:
When 2 1/2 ounces of sugar are used (which is the corrected amount given in a previous review), this is an AWESOME pie. The delicate orange flavor combined with the rich chocolate and buttery macedamias was a hit on our Thansgiving menu. I actually prepared this recipe in an 8" baking pan and cut the servings into small squares--the perfect amount for such a rich desert!

Soooo Good

User: Stacy from Zebulon, NC    User Rating:
If followed correctly, in the correct steps as the recipe follows this pie is awesome.I must warren this pie is very decadent.I don't think this recipe is for a novice cook as it does take a few steps and not followed to the precise directions it is easy to mess up.I fix it about once every two months for family and friends and it is eaten up very quickly.

This is a restaurant quality decadent pie. I would only make this if I had plenty of people to share it with. it is very rich, not the kind you and your spouse could knock back in a weekend.

too sweet and grainy

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I thought this pie had potential but like many others it was way too sweet (I added 2 cups of sugar instead of 21/2) and grainy. I think playing around with the recipe using 1 1/2 cups or 1 cup will be make this an awesome pie. Some people mention "corrected recipe" and yet all I find is the original recipe...????

Too Much Sugar??
12/13/2004 at 12:08pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I followed the recipe to the letter...found that 2.5 cups SUGAR in the white chocolate layer is way too much and wonder if that is correct. First, the sugar didn't disolve properly, resulting in a grainy texture. Second, it was so sweet, I couldn't stand it. Should confectioner's sugar have been used?

User: DEBBIE from wappingers falls, NY    User Rating:
Recipe calls for 2 1/2 cups of sugar....entirely too much....no one could eat it ! Not to mention that since superfine sugar isn't called for, it's very hard to break down the granules. I would suggest cutting the sugar in half and using superfine

User: ELLAN from Waynesburg, PA    User Rating:
This pie was the best pie I've ever tasted! When following the *corrected" recipe -- 2 1/2 ounces of sugar -- it is perfect. Words can't describe how delicious this pie is. The roasted macadamia nuts really bring out the rich flavors, and the filling was smooth textured and the taste was exquisite. I would suggest slicing this pie into small pieces -- it is very rich, but delicious. The pie was fun to make and it is a rich delicacy that I will continue to make for special occaions. We found that it is even better tasting the second day. Thank-you for sharing this special recipe with the public.

User: Jessi from Tenafly, NJ    User Rating:
WOW..I saw below that some of you added 2 to 2 1/2 cups of sugar. The recipe is now corrected to read 1/3 cup of sugar, which is perfect! I made this pie as part of my Thanksgiving dessert table, and it was gone in minutes. Also, I drizzled the chocolate on top instead of covering it fully. This was partly for decorative purposes, and to cut down on the chocolate a little, since my body goes berserk when I eat too much chocolate (I'm a caffeine free chick)..LOL Thanks for the recipe, Johnnie!

Gritty Texture Solution
11/24/2004 at 11:05am
User: HEIDI from Buffalo Grove, IL    User Rating:
One thing I found helpful with this recipe is to use the extra fine "baker's sugar" instead of regular granulated sugar when mixing with the cream cheese. It blends so much better, removes the gritty texture, and isn't nearly as sweet as if you use confectioner's sugar.

User: JOHNNIE from Marietta, GA    User Rating:
The sugar is 2 1/2 OUNCES, not 2 1/2 cups. "Cups" is a typo. It's a great seller at Gabriel's Desserts and my husband's favorite.

11/21/2004 at 04:14pm
User: ED from Marietta, GA    User Rating:
Please don't switch to confectioners sugar. Just beat the cream cheese and sugar well until the sugar melts (mixture will be fluffy). It takes time. We make these pies weekly at Gabriel's Desserts. It is one of our best selling desserts. Hope this answers the concerns. Paula's cousin, Johnnie at Gabriel's Desserts.

I took one of the recommendations of the other reviewer and added confectioners sugar instead of granulated. It was a big hit at our party but one small piece was enough, its very sweet. Filling tastes a little bit like frosting. But it's still a great pie!

User: JEANNINE from Inglewood, CA    User Rating:
I'm like the rest of the viewer's and have to agree that this recipe was just too sweet. Somebody mentioned confectioners sugar and I think they may have hit on the mark with that suggestion. The consistency was too grainy and just didn't work the way I thought. So far, this is the only recipe of Paula's that I have been disappointed with. That's not bad considering I have made many, many of her recipes.

User: KATHY from Charlotte, NC    User Rating:
I read the all the reviews first and YES, you were all right, that sugar isn't a "recipe wrecker". I tried everything to melt it before-hand. I ended up making "ice cream pie" and using the White choclate part as a topping and the choclate part as the "black bottom". It just doesn't add up, so something has to be wrong with this recipe.

This was very good, but I do think that there was a mistake in the recipe because the first time I made it, the pie was a little grainy and much too sweet. The second time I made it I used 1 cup of confectioner's sugar instead of the 2 1/2 cups of granulated sugar--what a difference! It was so good!! Your family will be very impressed with this one!

This pie was very good but it was so sweet it literally made my teeth hurt. I couldn't eat more then a few bites. There was too much sugar in the filling and I sort of felt like I was eating sand. If I make it again I will use less sugar in the filling.

WRONG SUGAR!!!!!!!!!

User: JENNIFER from Huntington, WV    User Rating:
This is a great recipe....but CHANGE THAT SUGAR TO CONFECTIONERS' SUGAR!!!!! I don't know if it's a misprint or what, but I tried this recipe first with regular sugar and it was awful....very very grainy. But then I tried it again using powdered sugar and it was perfect. I'm not sure what she used on the show, but you definitely need to use confectioners' sugar in this recipe. It really was a great pie after I corrected the mistake. I took it to a church dinner and several people asked me for the recipe. I will definitely make it again!

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
This looked like a fabulous recipe when I saw Paula make it on her show. So good, that I ran out to buy the (very expensive) ingredients to make it the next day. When my husband and I took our first bites, we thought it was delicious, but way too sweet. We didn't even finish our slices because the filling was so sweet it made our teeth hurt. I think 2-1/2 C of sugar in the filling is too much--I might make this again and try 1-3/4 C. Also, the sugar didn't dissolve into the cream cheese, so the filling was a little grainy. This might be resolved by beating it a little bit longer. Overall, the concept is great, but I think the recipe needs tweaking to make it a true success.

After making this pie several times in a very short amount of time, I had to stop making it. I kept eating the ENTIRE pie. This was very easy to make, even for a single twenty-something guy! The rich, smooth filling and the crunchy nuts were a great contrast. I would store it in the freezer to keep it good and solid until I just had to cut a huge slice for myself.

I used dark chocolate instead of white as I don't like white chocolate. The corrected 1/3 cup of sugar beaten with the cream cheese was not grainy..the mixture was quite smooth. Did not make the ganache..that would have been too much for this already too much dessert. Even with the whipped (without sugar) cream on top, it was not possible to eat more than 2 spoons of this pie. Sorry Paula...

Let me just say that I enjoy just about everything that Paula makes.Being from the south myself I make alot of the same things. I've been reading the reviews and just can't understand what all the fuss is about. Maybe I'm looking at the revised recipe but still. Anyone with a little sense would never add that much sugar,if you think somethings not going to work it probably won't.Use some common sense. Most recipes are guidelines that you follow to come up with the samething or pretty darn close, after you put your own spin on it. When you buy church recipe books down here in the south you get alot of add a pinch,a dallop, about a...cup,it's not always exact but you still get the idea.

Loved this pie, store bought crust didn't take anything from it, but next time I'll only add about 1/4 of the orange zest, and maybe skip the whipped cream on top because there is so much in it - almost overkill.

I made the pie for my birthday, and used the old recipe whiched called for way too much sugar. Still, the pie's potential was amazing, and it got even better as it aged. I will surely make it again with the improved recipe. I recomend this with out reservation. Enjoy!

This recipe was easy to make and follow. However, no one I made it for could finish their slice. It was too rich and too sweet.

I thought it would be complicated to make, but it was fairly easy and it was so good. I was skeptical at first, but the macadamia nuts made the pie even better.

a disappointment

This pie was a disappointment. I did take note of the sugar problem and used just a quarter of cup. I followed the rest of the directions and when the pie was served, I felt it lacked flavor and pizzaz. It sounded good on paper, but unfortunately, it was not as tasty as expected. Donna Bates

Should Have Read the Reviews

I was very disappointed with this dessert. What was up with the 2 1/2 cups of sugar? I seem like too much sugar at the time I was preparing it but I wanted to follow the recipe. Well it was a big waste of money. I had to throw it away. I will definitely try it again with less sugar because it tasted like it could be a wonderful dessert. And I will alway read reviews before attempting further recipes.

Suggested Changes

User: BOB from Farmington, UT    User Rating:
If you use the original recipe the pie will be very sweet and grainy if the sugar doesn't desolve with the addition of the melted white chocolate. I would suggest changing the granular sugar to confectioners sugar and added as the final item to taste. Then the pie will not be grainy and will only be as sweet as you like it.

wonderful!

Now that you have the sugar quantity correct (1/3 cup) - this is quite easy. I threw this together very quick, after work for guests that evening. Came out great. There is none left - everyone had seconds.

I watched the show with this recipe but wrote down the ingredients list from the show. She DOES NOT use 2.5 cups of sugar. For 8 oz (the amount I used) of cream cheese, serious cooks should know this is too much of a concentration to be able to incorporate. The pie was amazing. I added a little grand marnier in addition to the zest. Was wonderful and easy. Will definitely make again.

You have to LOVE macadamias

User: tim from mechanicsburg, PA    User Rating:
If you love macadamias - this recipe is the most decadent(sp?)treat you'll ever make. If you don't like them - don't make this - the nutty flavor permeates the whole pie. Take your time creaming the butter and sugar so it won't be grainy. I was thinking of using peanut butter and peanuts instead of macadamias and turning this into a peanut butter pie - the filling is so magnificent. Anybody out there think that would work?

Corrected amount of sugar

User: ED from Marietta, GA    User Rating:
This is a delicious pie but the amount of sugar used is incorrect. 2 1/2 ounces of sugar should be used which is equal to 1/3 cup plus 1 teaspoon. It's in ounces because we use it commerically at Gabriel's Desserts and weigh out a lot of our ingredients. Johnnie @ Gabriel's Desserts

This pie was to rich and "gushy" for me; some people may love it though. To SUSAN IN GLEN MILLS concerning the peach cobbler recipe: I've made a similar recipe for years. Here are a few tips. 1) Be sure to use self-rising flour. 2) Use a deep baking dish--mine measures 7-inches x 7-inches, and is 4- inches deep. A deep souffle dish might work, but a large shallow pan isn't the kind of dish to use for this cobbler. 3) Go easy on adding water. If the fruit is extra juicy, you don't need to add any water. Hope this helps.

Don't be alarmed when you read the other reviews for this recipe because I think someone saw the error in the recipe on the website and fixed the amount of sugar that you're supposed to add. So mine turned out PERFECT. It was absolutely delicious - my husband loved it; as Paula said, it's a real man-pleaser! I saw the episode where she made this yesterday and it did look like she added an awful lot of sugar - her pie looked like it was over the top of the crust when she filled it, whereas mine came just to the top. The amount of sugar for the filling that the recipe calls for (1/3 cup) is just perfect - this pie was perfect. I will make it next time we have company over or if we're invited to a friend's house for dinner.

IM GIVING THIS RECIPE A 5 ONLY BECAUSE WITH EVERYONE'S HELP (I READ REVIEWS BEFORE MAKING) THIS DESERT TURNED OUT FANSTATIC. FIRST THE SUGAR THING, USING 1 CUP AT A TIME OF POWDERED SUGAR, WILL HELP YOU DECIDE WHEN ITS SWEET ENOUGH FOR YOU (I THINK I USED 1 3/4 CUP).THE OTHER THING IS THE 2/3 CUP OF NUTS NEEDS TO GO IN THE FOOD PROCESSOR BECAUSE BEATING THEM IN A BAG WITH A MALLET DOESNT CUT IT.BESIDES ALL THAT THE PIE REALLY CAN TURN OUT TO BE WONDERFUL...
