A Winner & Some Adjustments

I get rave reviews EVERY time I make these. Suggestions & Changes for Perfection: 1. Ignore salt recommendation for salsa, salt to taste instead. 2. I use about 5 to 8 small to medium tomatillos. 3. I use 2 avocados 4. I don't blend the salsa ingredients in the food processor, but instead keep it chunky and it looks more like the picture and you get the individual flavors better. 5. Shrimp - I let the shrimp sit in the seasoning in a zip lock bag for a half hour, very nice flavor! Do yourself a favor and add this to your summer dinner recipes!

Delicious!

Great flavor, super easy. Even better served with homemade corn tortillas. Took the advice of other reviewers and cut way back on the onion, and roasted the tomatillos and jalapenos on the grill. About two tablespoons of chopped onion would be plenty.

Based on other reviews, I sweated shallots and the smashed garlic before adding to the food processor. My salsa was a little runny, so we used a slotted spoon to drain it. We made this for 2 hungry adults and I think next time I'll use 1 1/2 lbs shrimp. We have plenty of leftover salsa! Also, for a little added nutrients, I added finely shredded red cabbage to the tacos.

Pretty solid shrimp

I used Mrs. Dash Chipolte seasoning for the shrimp and it came out great. Never tried the salsa because I just made my own guacamole instead. Great combo.

This dish was really tasty and easy, instead of using Chipotle I just used Emeril's essence and it was perfect! Also, combining it with a side of Grilled Corn on the Cob with Garlic Butter, Fresh Lime and Cotija Cheese (Bobby Flay) made it an awesome feast. I will definitely be making this again.

This was easy and tasted great! I used 1 Knorr Chipotle Bouillon cube (found in mexican food isle), I will probably use 2 next time. I also used a whole avocado just because I did not notice the recipe only called for 1/2. I also only used 1/2 of a small yellow onion and will use flour tortillas next time. Will definitely make again!

Very easy. Very tasty!

Have tried this recipe many times, always with great results. I use flour tortillas just because I don't care too much for corn tortillas. The spice of the chipotle and the cool of the salsa make a great combination.

my boyfriend and i loved this one. I used pico de gallo instead of the individual ingredients for the salsa & just added avocado in the food processor. we also accidently got cooked frozen shrimp instead of uncooked. the cooked were super quick but didn't take on alot of the flavors of the chili powder.

Awesome Anytime Meal

User: Sean from Woodinville, WA    User Rating:
As long as you use a truly small onion for this recipe then you will be fine. Also, doubling the avacado will do wonders. Don't add lime to the salsa if you don't have tomatillos. Also, if you can't handle hot food, then go light on the chili pepper on the shrimp. We will surely make this again!

To increase the flavor I ended up roasting the tomatillos, jalapeno and garlic - just to get a char on them. Then I blended them with the onion(cut in half per other reviewers)and cilantro. I also added the juice of one lime. I didn't have any chipotle spice, so I used the sauce out of a can of chipotles on the shrimp. I thought the flavors worked well together.

This is a relatively easy recipe. I made it with about a 1/2 lb of shrimp and 1 lb of Tilapia. Both were very good, but my husband and I agree the shrimp were a little better! The salsa was a wonderful complement to the spiciness of the shrimp. Overall, we loved the recipe!

Excellent With some Tweaks
05/15/2007 at 05:09pm
User: Kasey from Tampa, FL    User Rating:
I have made variations of both the shrimp and the salsa several times and finely think I have come up with the perfect tweaks. Roast the tomatillos, onion, garlic and jalapeno in the oven for about 10-15 minutes. Also use more garlic. This tones down the onion flavor and gives everything a warm, deep roasted flavor. I also like to add a little bit of lime at the finish. For the shrimp, I recommend using canned chipotle chilis in adobo and marinating the shrimp in the finely chopped chilis and sauce for about 30 minutes. Overall I think this dish is healthy, quick and authentic.

User: Allison from Woodland Hills, CA    User Rating:
Well, I was sadly disappointed with this. I was really excited that it was going to be a yummy, healthy recipe. However, something just wasn't right. My boyfriend and I think it was that the onions were too overpowering. Part of the problem could be that we couldn't find a small onion, so we just cut a large one in half and then quartered that. Also, we added about half a clove extra of garlic since we like it so much, but I doubt that did much. Although, other people are complaining about the onion being too overpowering as well, so maybe it is not just me. If I were to try to make this again, I would put way less onion, and maybe try it with some black beans and a little sour cream like others suggested. Oh, the shrimp I do have to rave about. It was great! We used the rest and made a fab quesadilla. Yum Yum. Will definitely be making that with other recipes.

I really enjoyed this meal. There are a few things I would change though. The other reviewers that said the onion taste is too strong are right and I am an avid onion eater! I reccomend that you choose a mild onion like a red or shallots or brown the onions before making the salsa.I left out the avacado to cut some more fat but I know it would be delicious with the avacado!A quick tip: Make sure you brown the corn tortillas well because if they are too soft they will get soggy and all of the filling will fall through.I also had to drain the liquid off of the salsa, the tomatillos added too much juice.Would be excellent over pasta as well!! Enjoy

Note to those who can't handle the heat. Remove the seeds from jalepenos or any peppers you use...this causes the heat! Also - brown big chunks of white onion (not in oil)to bring a smooth smoky flavor. Overall this is a very tasty dish! Will definitely make it again.

The flavors of this dish combine perfectly. You will never need another taco recipe again, it would also work with sliced chicken breast. I think people used too large of an onion, I used a small onion and it came out perfect, if you only had a large onion I would cut it in half. Thanks for the recipe!

too much onion

made the salsa before the shrimp. should have followed my intuition, that there would be an overwhemling onion flavor. that's all i could taste in the salsa, even after adding the other half of the avocado and a couple extra tomatillos. did not want to ruin the shrimp, so tossed the salsa and moved on.

This was one of the best dishes I've ever made and it's quite simple. While the shrimp was good the salsa was outstanding. The tomatillos add a unique lemon/vinegar flavor to the salsa that is quite strong. I may tone it down next time by substituting a green tomato for one of the tomatillos.

User: carol from Sheridan, IL    User Rating:
This recipe is delicious as is, but the spiciness can be increased or decreased by the quality of the chipotle powder used, as well as the ripeness of the jalapenos. Adding a small amout of sourcream to the salsa will also tone down the heat. My daughter likes flour tortillas over corn, so try warming a few of those up as well. Excellent as appetizers before a mexican meal.*****

The recipe was very good, however the onion in the salsa verde turned out pretty strong. I would suggest either using purple onion, or sauteeing/cooking the onion before adding directly to salsa. Chipotle gave shrimp an excellent flavor that was surprisingly not TOO spicy.

This is such a great recipe! I make the guacamole all the time for dipping. I altered it a bit by not adding the tomatillos and adding about 3-4 tbsp of lime juice. I also use 2 avocados. SO GOOD! The shrimp are also amazing! I serve the tacos with shredded lettuce, green chiles, and the guac and they are a huge hit! This is pretty healthy too! My husband says he is no longer interested in beeef/chicken tacos! Make this--you'll love it!

Here in So Cal, we have been eating up the best fish tacos and shrimp tacos for decades at our local restaurants. This recipe IMHO is worthy. The only addition I made was to finely shred some green cabage to top off the tacos (adds some texture and brings out the other flavors).
