A very expensive waste of time

Expensive ingredients. Difficult Recipe. Sloppy and Unappealing Result. Won't try it again.

This was A LOT of trouble

after baking the pie, the puff pastry, scooping and breaking and mixing and filling and stacking, I expected to be WOWWED. It just tasted like pie with cool whip.

The cream filling was not very tasty

User: Cordeilia from Mirimar, CA    User Rating:
I would have preferred to have the pie with whipped cream instead. This looked sloppy and took a long time to make.

Lots of work for little reward

This really wasn't very good, and some of the steps made no sense. Why waste a perfectly good apple pie when all you need is the filling? Just use a can of apple pie filling, or cook some apples.

What a waste of time!

I just watched the show and had to see reviews. I am glad to see that I am not alone. Why would you crush an apple pie...with the crust and place on a puff pastry? Semi-Homemade? Full waste of effort.

huge mess

Tasty, but Messy!

I liked the concept of this recipe and thought it looked spectacular on the show. However, it was really hard to put together and plate up. When placing the 2nd and 3rd layers, it fell over & came all apart...of course this was right before my guests were to arrive. I basically cut it into serving sizes and scooped it on to dessert plates, which I topped w/ add'l whipped cream and glaze. Everyone raved about the taste of the dessert, even tho' it looked a mess on the plate. Might be easier to just make the pie and serve everyone a piece.

It fell apart

I made this and it fell over and was a mess on the platter. This was a total mess, waste of a pie, and darn expensive. It also tasted pretty bad. This was awful.

My 5 star version

User: Danny from Encino, CA    User Rating:
So based on the other reviews, I went more the homemade route, but it took no time and was AWESOME!! Rave reviews from my guests. I peeled and cut about 3-4 Granny Smith apples and coated them with cinnamon and sugar and sauteed them in a little butter until tender. I then whipped up some whipping cream, adding vanilla and a little sugar as it whipped. I did stay true to the store bought pastry dough part and did create a trough with the first layer. From there on out, I layered dough, whipped cream and apples 3 times - Ending w/ a top layer of whipped cream and a drizzling of caramel sauce (one cup melted brown sugar and one cup cream - mix, let set and it will be thick and delicious when drizzle time approaches). Enjoy!

It looked very easy yet elegant on the show but it turned out just the opposite. It was hard to make and a sloppy mess. Plus I did feel silly making it. I agree with the others: just serve the pie with some ice cream -- don't smash it up and try to make it something it's not.

Wasteful and Time Consuming

When my husband asked me where his slice of apple pie was after I spent a good while taking it apart, I realized just what a waste of time and money this recipe was.

My family politely told me they would have preferred the apple pie as it was

After all that work, I had to agree with them. Serving a nice apple pie makes a lot more sense.

This recipe is great if you need to take out your frustrations on apple pie. It is great therapy, really. How many times have you had to resist the temptation to mush up a pie? Well, now you have aa actual reason to! Aside from that, just make the desert with some apple pie filling (homemade or canned) and real whipped cream (once again, either homemade or canned) and a drizzle of caramel sauce. THAT would be delicious!

Disaster
03/10/2006 at 04:19pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
This was a disaster from start to finish. Midway through I just thought to myself "what ARE you doing?" The apple pie. The pastry. The Cool Whip. All nice things until you butcher them altoghether in this recipe. It tasted like storebought pie and cool whip and it looked like a frightening, leaning wreck of Cool Whip and pastry.

Do yourself a favor and just eat the pie as is with maybe some fresh whipped cream and some caramel sauce. This "recipe" is a waste of time and money.

My version of this recipe...better than just apple pie
01/02/2007 at 03:29pm
User: Doris from Ontario, CA    User Rating:
After reading some of the reviews I was a little afraid to make this recipe... so I changed it a little bit. I only made my napoleon 2 layers (not so wobbly) and I left out the cream cheese filling alltogether...instead...I made a sauce of 1 Cup brn sgr, 1/4 cup white sgr, 1 Tbls+ butter, 2+ Tbls water... bring to a boil and let cook for a few mins. I drizzled this over each layer of the apple mixture...then I mixed a little sugar/cinammon mix with the puff pastry that I pulled out to make a trough and sprinkled it over the top and served it with vanilla ice-cream. Some of you were right...you could just serve a pc. of apple pie....but this really did look pretty and it tasted great. I used a reg. pie...not a crumb top pie, so the added brown sugar mixture really made it nice and sweet and rich. Very easy to do.

Great Cakes!
