Recipe did not leave anyone in my family looking for more. Prepared with roasted rather than ground turkey, and the flavors did not seem to blend very well. It was ok, but not great. I would not try it again, even with ground turkey.

The bacon used in this recipe adds a great taste to the turkey. I loved the color of the veggies once you scoop out some mashed potatoes.

Yeah, I know this should be self explanatory. But since I'm often accused of improvising, I decided to follow this recipe by the letter. Since it didn't say drain the fat, I didn't. Despite common sense telling me to. It was an unedible, greasy, nasty waste of at least 5 pounds of food.

Tastes great, but this one took me way longer than 30 minutes to make - nearly an hour by the time I was finished. but in the end, the result turned out well. The sauce was kind of runny, I don't think I would add 2 c. of stock next time. Also, my veggies needed a little bit longer to cook. I sprinkled some grated cheese on top for a little extra - an addition that I'll do again next time.

My friend helped me make this one, so we split up the chopping and prepping duties. It came out very delicious. I do agree with the rest of the people that commented on the thickness of the "gravy"..it was pretty thin but the longer it sat in the fridge and when it was reheated it tasted thicker and even better hours later. We finished the whole thing in one day!

Oh my god, best thing ever.

Made this for a dinner party. Everyone LOVED it. Used the sweet paprika/cumin, and it was just fine. Also listened to the other reviews and did regular smoky bacon, not turkey bacon... it really does add great flavor. I used the full 2 cups of chicken stock, but let it reduce down for about a half an hour. Really helped the flavors blend beautifully. Used the ready-to-heat mashed potatoes... Just heated them on the stove, and stirred in the chives. Much easier. Put into individual ramekins which made it especially fun for the dinner party. Makes WAY more than 4 servings... probably closer to 10-12. All in all, it was a great dish, one that I will definitely make again.

This was the best dish I've made in a while. My family fought over the left-overs. They loved it and still talk about it when I mention cooking dinner. They'd eat it every night if I would cook it. Even I went back for seconds. They've requested no bacon for the next batch, we don't eat pork, so I substituted turkey bacon, they thought it would be great without it. Thanks Rachel, this was a hit.

Even watching Rachel taste this dish on her show she didn't seem as pleased as she usually is with her dishes, this made my husband and I skeptical but we decided to try it anyway. We found this dish as everyone else said, longer than 30 minutes and the turkey gave it no taste. The spices overpowered the dish but left only the bacon as the true flavor in it. It's a shame that I have so much left over now.

Turkey Shepard's Pie Awesome

User: Jeri from Lancaster, SC    User Rating:
I followed the recipe exactly with the exception of adding cheese at the end and it was wonderful. When I read the reviews from many that said the meat mixture was runny I wasn't sure I wanted to try but it was great. I think perhaps many that found it runny must have used ground beef instead of turkey. Ground beef has much more fat so it would probably need to be drained. Also, I let my mixture simmer a bit with 1/2 cup of the 2 cups of broth and once that had simmered down I then added the flour and balance of broth. This allowed the veggies to cook more and I ended up with a very rich, thick sauce.

I substituted the turkey with ground beef and I followed the other suggestions to use a little less stock and it turned out great! I will use more veggies next time and probably more seasoning all told as well, mainly because we tend to buy larger amounts of meat than what the recipe stated. I also made the peas on the side as I don't really like them much but others in my family do. It worked out really well. I will be making it again in the near future and I think it might become a bit of a staple meal around here. :)

08/18/2006 at 03:25pm
User: Melissa from Hoffman Estates, IL    User Rating:
I made this last night and while it was good, it could have used much more flavor. Also, it made a 13X9 casserole, not a medium dish. It was a lot of food. I had to add more flour to thicken the sauce a little more. Not horrible, but definitely needs some adjustments.

Yummy, even if you change it up

User: Lynn from Livermore, CA    User Rating:
I didn't have bacon, peas, or red bell pepper. Also, my husband hates cooked onions, celery, and bell peppers. But, I really wanted to make this recipe. So, I substituted like crazy. I had smoked turkey lunchmeat & proscuitto slices. I chopped those up together and cooked them up in place of the bacon (and, it worked). I used the sweet paprika/cumin substitution trick she suggested. I used carrots, corn, and green beans in place of the peas, celery, and bell pepper. It was really good. Drawback: I found it too runny, as well, but that was probably me being too heavy handed on the chicken stock.

I'll make again and again

I REALLY liked this one. The mixture of spices and flavors was just wonderful. The paprika & chives were such simple touches that really added a lot to the final dish. Very simple & downhome meal. Probably took me a total of 40 minutes to make. The extra time was because of chopping. I'm just not as fast as Rachael - but I'm getting there.

This is an amazing recipe!! My brother couldn't believe that I actually made this - he thought it was from a restaurant! I left the sour cream out of the turkey base (as the thought of mixing the two grossed me out) and put in half the amount of bacon and it was amazing. The sauce was runny, though, so I just added some cornstarch until it thickened. Brilliant, I will make this at least once a month! Thanks!!!

User: CYNTHIA from Provo, UT    User Rating:
If you have everything washed before hand this would go faster, but still, who can complain over a homemade meal that is delicious for only 45 minutes of work? The fresh herbs and ground spices really make this flavorful. I didn't have a bell pepper and agree that it isn't really essential. I did think the "gravy" was too runny. I'll decrease the stock to only 1 1/2 cups next time. And increase the potatoes to please my kids. Other than that, this was a BIG hit with my husband, 7-year-old, 4-year-old, and 1 year old.

I had watched Rachael prepare this on TV in 30 minutes but it definitely took me much longer. Perhaps because I cook on an electric stove, but the veggies needed much more time that indicated. I ended up adding worcestershire sauce at the end to pump up the flavor and it turned out pretty yummy!

I liked this recipe with the added ingredients like bacon, and sour cream. It did not take only 30 minutes for me to make--Rachael goes much faster than we do, so it was more like an hour. And, I'm not sure the red pepper is really important, might try it without it next timet. I also used 5 Yukon Gold potatoes instead of the 3 Idaho, because Yukons are so sweet and buttery, but they're smaller than Idaho so 5 is sufficient for the recipe. Also, I thought the sauce came out really well by her method.

This is a really tasty and quick meal to fix. The best advice I have is to do all the prep work (chopping veggies and measuring ingredients) before you start for ease. I watched Rachel Ray chop and measure as she went and she made it look a little easier than it is for a lay person to do. Makes a lot of food and is great for leftovers!

It also took me much longer than 30 minutes! Once it was done it was a hit with both my 3 and my 1 1/2 year old which to me makes it worth the additional time! I used more than 3 potatoes since the kids love mashed potatoes. I will definately make this one again!

It took much longer than 30 minutes! I would chop all of the vegetables before starting any of the cooking. I found that I was chopping way past the reccomended cooking times for some of the veggies. I would also cook the veggies a bit longer next time, particularly the carrots. Good recipe, though!

Needs the spices to be boosted up a notch or two, even though I had doubled the amount of seasoning I felt the dish was rather bland. I thought the ground turkey made the dish a little watery as well. HOWEVER, my Dad and my BF really like it so.........it's a keeper with a few minor alterations.

Worth a try!

By adjusting the recipe to our taste (adding a little more crushed red pepper) we've found a recipe that we make at least a couple times a month. Don't forget to make sure you're getting ground turkey breast, otherwise, ground turkey's fat content is just the same as though you used ground beef!

After watching Rachel's show for the first time and seeing this episode, I decided to try it, as I have a lot of ground turkey in my freezer (which I live out of!). I'm usually not a bacon fan, but that really jazzed up the blandness of the turkey. My husband and 16 year old daughter were skeptical at first, but they really loved it by the time the meal was over! Especially Megan, who is very fussy. She chowed down the leftovers when she got home from work that night, also! My husband doesn't particularly care for casseroles, but he said he'd like it again. I didn't have frozen peas on hand, but I used a handful of mixed frozen vegetables and that added some extra color & texture.

Though definitely more than 30 minutes when you include prep time, this meal was delicious! Given that you use turkey meat, there's no fat to drain, the colors were great, and it even worked well substituting a little milk for the sour cream (my husband can't eat sour cream). Best served with a Guinness!

Though a regular watcher of the show, this was the first time I tried a recipe, and I was disappointed both with the flavor and the amount of time and effort required. Like other reviewers, it took over an hour and some of the veggies were underdone. My husband had several servings, though I'm not sure if that was because he really liked it or because he was starving by the time it was finished. I'm a big fan of Shepherd's Pie, but sadly, not this version.

This was a great dinner to cook when Mom and Dad stop over just before dinner time. It has tons of vegetables and all the ingredients were what I commonly have on hand. Dad ate 3 helpings, so I give it an A+. I found the taste, warm and wonderful. I might add a little corn next time, just to give it one more vegetable. A good basic dish for a cold, winter day.

I love 30 minute meals because its not overdone with complicated ingredients. They are indredients that I can find anywhere. I don't cook that much but this show gives me hope because the recipes are easy, and it makes me look like a good cook. I tried the Shephard's Pie and my husband loved it. He thought I was taking secret cooking classes or something. He thought I spent hours on it, when of course it was only "30 minutes". Thank You Rachel Ray.

Not 30 minutes but yummy

User: Tina from St. Simons Island, GA    User Rating:
This took me about an hour, but that was while being distracted by my 2yo and 4yo. So without distraction, maybe 45 minutes. Of course, the kids didn't eat it, but I didn't expect them to. They won't eat anything mixed together in a casserole unfortunately. I used turkey sausage instead of turkey breast, and it was really good. While the directions were clear, there were a lot of steps, and with the distraction of the kids, I made a few mistakes (like forgot to put in the flour before the chicken broth). But I punted, and it turned out fine. My potato quantity wasn't quite the same as called for in the recipe, so when I added the tempered egg, my potatoes were too liquidy. I shouldn't have dumped it all in, but like I said I was in a hurry and distracted. So, be careful when you add the egg that you only add enough to have the right consistency. Baking up the potatoes under the broiler helped resolve the problem mostly, but it would have been better a bit thicker. Overall, this was really good. Great flavor. Better than I expected using turkey. The sour cream added a nice flavor too. But 4 stars because of the complexity and +30 minutes.

I was expecting this to be great. It really was nasty! Spices overwhelmed it and i didnt even use all the recommended amounts. Turkey just didnt do it. I didnt mind how long it took (1 hour) but it should have been worth it. I gave it to my husband and was embarresed. GROSS! One spoonful and we went to the fridge for leftovers.
