Excellent potato recipe. My husband isn't a potato fan but after eating this dish he asked that I make it again a week later for guests. (I added some paprika on top which gave it a nice golden brown topping.) Thanks Ina!

We had 29 people over for Christmas dinner and this dish received rave reviews. Easy to prepare, I made the potatoes several hours in advance. The fennel adds a nice flavor that goes perfectly with the cheese. I heated the cream and mixed in the shredded cheese to create a smooth sauce and poured it over the potatoes. This prevents the cream and cheese from forming 'glops' amongst the potatoes.

This recipe was a huge hit at our Christmas dinner. Totally yummy!! All proportions in the recipe turned out right. We used a high-end guyere, which I would recommend, because it really made the dish.

I NEVER MET A RECIPE FROM INA I DIDN'T LIKE, but this one is SUPERB! I did use a lot more Gruyere chese because I didn't think 1/2 lb made 2-1/2 cups of grated cheese. My goodness, I could sit down and eat THE WHOLE THING by myself. I can't wait to serve it to my guests. The fennel gave such a good flavor to this recipe, without tasting like anice. Ina you are the greatest. Thank you.

My husband, who doesn't really like vegetables, loves this recipe. Since we are watching calories and cholesterol I substitute fat free half and half for the cream and part skim mozzerella for the swiss. It still tastes fabulous!

I used mozzarella cheese, and put little squares of butter on top of potatoes before baking, this gave it a great golden brown color. I also ajusted baking temperature to 375 and baked it for about 45 min, it depends how thick your potatoe slices are. Highly recomended, I will make it over and over again.

I too had not cooked with fennel and still am not sure if I would like it on its own. In this gratin it was wonderful. In terms of ingredients, I followed the recipe and think that Gruyere is a must. Half way through the baking time the potatoes were not done and the top was getting brown so I just stirred everything and it turned out great.

I made this for a large crowd. Doubled the recipe and poured into a 6 quart baking dish the day before. Brought to room temp. and baked for 2 hours. It was still very creamy when taken out of the oven but perfect after it set for an hour. A vegetable slicer made all the difference, thank you for sharing that trick!

At the age of 54, I'm learning to cook. My own mother was the opposite of adventurous when it came to cooking, and now with Foodnetwork, I've found something I love. I'd even love to go to culinary school. This Potato-Fennel Gratin is my favorite way to eat potatoes, and it's thanks to Ina Garten, who made it look so easy to do, that I attempted it the first time. Kudos to Ina and her endlessly creative and adventurous cooking spirit for inspiring so many to try new things. You are the best. Jeanette Barrett North Providence, Rhode Island

I made this dish along with Beef and Butternut Squash Stew (Giada), and my husband, a friend, sister and brother-in-law, and myself all give a "thumbs-up!" Very creamy. I'm sure it would have been even better with the right kind of cheese (live in small town) and no one had Gruyere - I had smoked Gouda and used it - not bad!
