Fabulous...but I did change it a little

User: Lauren from Rockford, MI    User Rating:
This was SOOOO tasty and beautiful. I did change it a tad bit. I added sauteed mushrooms and I used Spicy Italian pork sausage instead of Turkey. I did have a little trouble getting it out of the spring form as it stuck to the side a bit. Next time I will use parchment paper and butter that in the pan to insure it comes out flawless. Other than that it was perfect and even the picky eaters ate it up! :D

Unique!

I liked this recipe and so did my friends and family. They all asked me for copies of the recipe. The only thing i would change is the chunks of monserella cheese,I next time i make it i will grate up half of it and keep the other half chopped up. It was a unique and deliocious pasta dish!

So Delicious!

I made this tonight for a dinner party and it was incredible! I prepared it up until the step of rolling out the puff pastry the night before and put it in the refrigerator. Then I rolled out the puff pastry right before guests were arriving and filled it. The puff pastry was the most difficult part, which wasn't too bad. It was so yummy! I substituted ground turkey instead of turkey sausage and added a lot more pepper flakes to add some kick. The pie makes for great presentation - cutting it was definitely messy but it was just too good to care! I will definitely make this again!

Not a good idea to use puff pastry
04/09/2008 at 07:26pm
User: Alina from Greenlawn, NY    User Rating:
I thought that the filling was tasty.I think that it can be great just served over pasta. The puff pastry did not add anything to it, except extra calories and expense of buying it. Everything was ready in 50 min. Also, I had a lot of trouble fitting everything it. i would cut the amount of filling in half. I will not be making this again.

This dish is fantastic- beautiful presentation and delicious! I've substituted mushrooms for eggplant as well as making it with eggplant and both ways were great. I used half the amount of mozzarella because I thought it was a little too much and it was still great and cheesy enough. I also like the spicy italian turkey sausage to give it a little extra kick.

I saw the show and could not wait for an occasion to try it out... The occasion presented itself whem my son brough a friend for dinner after a snowboarding trip. Only seing their faces from the moment I brought the dish to the table until they finished and voluteered to take some home, was a treat. Thanks, Giada! I guess this is the main reason why we like cooking.

This one was a bit of work but the end result was tasty. The only downside was that at 50 minutes of baking, the crust already looked well done. So on the advice of my husband, I took it out of the oven. Well the top was done and the filling was cooked (cheese melted) but the sides and bottom of the crust were still soggy. Do they ever crisp up even if you leave it in longer? I'd appreciate any advice on the baking time versus an overcooked top and undercooked sides!

So different yet so good

Wow Giada, thumbs up on this one. My family and I loved this recipe. Having never cooked with eggplant or ever really eating it before this was a great introduction. I made this for a Christmas celebration dinner and actually did all the steps before adding the cheese the night before the dinner. I put it in the fridge and the next day added the cheeses and put the mixture in the dough. It turned out so tasty. I also forgot to thaw the dough and had to use the microwave (which I know they recommend not to) and it still worked perfectly. I did use spicy Italian sausage (not turkey sausage)and I really felt that was a wise choice. It definitely gave the dish the little kick it needed. It may sound like a complex dish but it really isn't and is well worth it in the end.

This is my boyfriend's favorite recipe! He asks for it all of the time. I omit the eggplant because neither of us care for it and add more sausage. I also use hot sausage removed from the casings. It adds a bit of a kick to the dish. I've also tried using filo dough instead of the puff pastry and it works really well, especially on the bottom layer.

Time consuming, but worth it

I had eggplant fresh from the farmer's market and needed something to make, so tried this based on reviews. I made my own marinara too (Tyler Florence's recipe- search for Food 911 + Marinara - great & easy, but added time). Skipped the red pepper as my 3 year old doesn't like "spicy". She requested that I make it again tomorrow. Seemed done after little over 60 minutes baking. Don't skimp on "let it sit" - gets runny when you cut. All in all - Turned out GREAT. Hubby said it was one of my best dinners ever. A lot of time, but really worth it. Will try with zucchini too someday.

I can't give this a full five stars b/c I didn't make the actual recipe. I have a picky eater in the household who doesn't like eggplant. So I substituted it with 1/2 lb of very lean beef and 1/2 red onion pretty much making this a spaghetti pie. Also, I did not use "fresh" cheese as my only options were KRAFT products. The presentation of this pie was awesome!! It was flavorful and what little leftovers we had the next day were just as good as the day before. I do hope to make the eggplant version perhaps for a work pot-luck!

This baked angel hair is GREAT! Everyone in my family loves it. It takes a while to prepare but when you see the outcome of this beautiful pie you will want to take a picture of it and make it for special occasions or holidays. The flavors comliment each other. You want to wait a while before you cut this so it settles and cools. makes the slices firm so the angel hair does not fall out of the pastry shell everywere. I give this recipe a 2 thumbs up for taste and the way it looks!

Made this the first time my wife and she liked it, but thought the eggplant flavor was a little strong for her liking. I've made it since using different combinations of mushrooms & zucchinni as substitute for about 1/2 of the called-for amount of eggplant, and found that we both liked the flavors they added to this already-flavorful dish.

I made this for both myself (and husband) and for a friend who just had a baby and has a 7 and 3 year old....everyone LOVES it!!! My only tip is that I ended up not being able to fit all of the pasta into the pan (and I really mounded it in there) so I would either use 1/2-3/4 lb. of pasta or, you could do what I did and freeze the pasta mixture that didn't fit to eat on its own another time. I'll definitely be making this one again...it's worth the effort!

Wonderful for company! Just put it in the oven and forget about it! I used a 9-inch springform with no problems (unlike other reviewers) ... you need to pack it down and it fits perfectly. I substituted zucchini for the eggplant. I agree that you could also skip the pastry, but it's much more "impressive" when you use it. If it's just my family, I would make it without pastry and maybe sprinkle some breadcrumbs with cheese on top for some crunch. You might also want to break the pasta up before you cook it ... it's a bit hard to mix when you have the long strands before you put it into the pie shell.

This recipe was kinda time consuming what with cooking the eggplant and garlic in 2 batches, which I think I will skip next time. I couldn't seem to get the pastry to cover the bottom of the spring form pan and come up high enough that I felt secure when opened that the whole pie mixture wouldn't go oozing out, so I just baked the mixture with the pastry on the top in a large casserole dish Came out beautifully after 50 minutes of cooking!! The whole family loved the taste and texture. I used Classico Mushroom spaghetti sauce instead of the marinara and it was yummy!! Will definitely make again.

I made this for a dinner party & it really impressed a group of picky eaters. I couldn't find spicy turkey sausage (which I would prefer), so I used ground turkey instead; & just seasoned it to taste like sausage with some red pepper, garlic, and fennel seeds. I also used wheat angel hair & cut the mozzarella cheese amount in 1/2. The end result was delicous & the presentation was beautiful! Everyone loved it & asked me for the recipe. Next time, I will make it without the puff pastry (like some other reviewers did) as this adds tons of extra calories that I think should be reserved for special occasions when you really want to impress your guests!

My family really enjoyed this dish (even my father who doesn't like eggplant that much). It makes a pretty presentation. Would be a good dish to serve at a dinner party since you put it in the oven and forget about it until done.

A great dish to make. We subsituted mushrooms for eggplant and Barilla+ pasta. Very cheesey and the sausage was awesome. The leftovers were great, though it didn't reheat to well in the Microwave. Though that is overlookable. It is just a great pasta dish. Good for the whole family.

This recipe is excellent! I loved it and will make it again, probably using a variety of vegetables to change things up. I used spicy sausage, which was a great addition. I would probably use a little less cheese, as I have some moderate cheesers in the household.

I made the filling a day ahead and the day after I put the filling in a pie plate (only 1/2 of the filling) and used a pie crust over it - I don't have a springfoam pan. It was good but I think making the filling a day ahead and letting it meld together made it that much better. I will make again (after I buy a SF pan).

I had my family over for dinner recently and prepared this recipe. It was such a big hit that I would definitely make this again and again. The only thing that I changed was I used a 10 inch springform pan instead of a 9 inch. It worked perfect. Thanks Giada!

I found this recipe easy to prepare, however, next time i will substitute large mushrooms for the eggplant, as the eggplant was too slimy for our preference. also, our local grocery store did not have pastry sheets, so i had to substitute kroger brand roll-out 9" pie crusts. i rolled them out to make them thinner and bigger, and they worked just fine! all in all, after we picked out the eggplant, it was delicious!!!

User: Jennifer from Brookfield, CT    User Rating:
I saw Giada make this and was totally in awe and had to make it for a twist on regular angel hair pasta, what a great choice! I changed a few ingredients and used sweet sausage and added mushrooms to the eggplant and WOW! The puff pastry pasta pie was such a great twist on regular pasta and was a huge hit in my house. The only con was there was a few steps involved, but if you love it cook who cares! ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

I had to use sweet italian pork sausage instead of the turkey. The pie came out great, everyone loved it but I thought a more mild sausage like turkey would have been less overpowering. would make it again for a crowd. It feeds a lot..

This is a wonderful dish. I do, however, recommend following the directions and bake for the entire hour and a half. You may need to cover the top to save the pastry from buring. The tastes are just fantastic!!

This recipe takes some time to prepare, bake, and then rest so be prepared! The end result, however, is beautiful as well as delicious! There was so much filling that the pie was about an inch over the rim of the springform pan. I just put a baking sheet under it to catch the little bit of spillover that occurred. You could just make some individual pies instead of overstuffing it, though. I think that next time I will make this in a 9x13 in. pan which won't be as pretty as the other but will be easier to deal with for the family.

This was a delicious dish and fun to make. Although, I adjusted the recipe to my husband's and my personal taste. I replaced the eggplant with broccoli and mushrooms, slightly steaming the broccoli before adding it to the mixture. I also used a hot Italian sausage rather than turkey sausage. In addition to being very tasty, it also looks very pretty served on a platter. I can't wait to serve it to company.

I was looking for an eggplant recipe that my 3 teenage kids would like and this was it. I don't think it even needed the pastry but my husband liked it. It took longer than 30 mins for me to make because I forgot to thaw the pastry. I never tried turkey sausage before but it was very good in this recipe.

A couple of things though. Be careful of your choice of springform pans; there is no way that my 9" pan would hold this whole thing - I barely got it all in the 10". I also used 4 cups of sauce - maybe I needed more because I used Giada"s homeade instead of store bought. Regardless, once it's done it's really really good. I have no idea how this behemoth warms over, but I can't wait to find out.

When I saw Giada making this on TV, my mouth was watering watching it. This dish tastes just as good as it looked on TV. I used regular eggplant and it came out great. It does take some work but it was so delicious and looked so beautiful. My husband went crazy for it and we had to stop ourselves from eating more than one piece. I will be serving this again and again and can't wait to make it for the next potluck I have to go to.

Delicious Combination of Flavors

User: Laura from Calabasas, CA    User Rating:
This recipe went together easily with everything going just exactly as the recipe indicated. The final product, the pasta pie, is an impressive looking dish to serve. However, the real joy is in the taste. There is a real depth of flavors. The eggplant adopts the other flavors, but a hint of eggplant taste remains; the wine that the Italian sausage is cooked in adds a layer of flavor, as does the garlic. Blend in the marinara sauce, pasta and add in the tasty crust, and...WOW. This dish is a WINNER. My family LOVED it.

This recipe was easy to make and very satisfying. The cheesy inside was a nice compliment to the buttery, crispy crust. I had to covered up the top crust with foil after about 45 minutes of baking because it was browning too quickly. I also reduced the temperature to about 325.
