Salty sandwich and Gruyere gastrointestinal disaster
12/05/2006 at 04:17pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
This sandwich looked delicious and I couldn't wait to try it. My fiance scarfed it down, but mentioned to substitute the Gruyere cheese for swiss the next time and that it was a "little salty". Two hours later, he complained of stomach pain and was in the bathroom with a "little" gastrointestinal distress! This is a very rich and salty sandwich, not for those accoustomed to regular, american and sometimes bland cooking.

Thank You Madame!

I made this last night for dinner, with one bite my boyfriend said "OMG this is good" we agree its a keeper. I took out the ham on my 4 year olds and told him it was a cheese sandwhich. I also used smoked virgina ham and will make again, easy and turned out great! Thanks!

Last night was a rainy night so we made the Croque Monsieur and home made tomato soup. It was the best, The cheese sauce was rich and salty, which I love along with the ham and mustard all the flavors melded and it all worked excellently. God Bless Ina!

These sandwiches were very easy to make. I didn't make all of them at once. I was glad to see the cheesy sauce is easy to reheat. My husband loved them. I will make these again. Thanks for providing such an easy recipe Ina !!! Now I can save my money and not have to buy them at La Madeline.

C'est tres bon!

Way cheaper than flying to France! This cheesy sandwich will transport directly to the sidewalk cafes of Paris. It's quite easy and quick to prepare too.

I had all ingredients on hand, but cut the recipe in half while still using the pinch of nutmeg. The aroma and taste are sensational!! Be mindful of the broiler time. These brown very quickly.

I have been wanting to make this recipe for a while. I used good gruyere cheese and it was perfect. I made 1/4 of the recipe for two sandwiches. It was outrageously delicous. My husband loved it. I will try not to serve it very often because of the high fat and cholesterol content. But it is to die for. Thank you Ina.

This recipe was to die for. Don't try making it in a toaser oven though as I did. Usually in the summer I cook everthing in the toaser oven, but my cheese wouldn't brown. Easy to solve though, I just popped them in the broiler as recommended for a few minutes. My son described the sandwiches as "very flavorful" I call them rich and sinfully delicious. I quartered the ingredients and only made two sandwiches.

Perfect!

I don't think I'd ever really cooked French food before Ina, or at least I didn't pay attention to food that was French. Whenever I have a friend tell me they don't like or know much about French food, I invite them over for these delicious sandwiches! Because I tend to use a sweet ham, I serve these with a salad made of bitter greens and Ina's signature mustard viniagrette. Yum!

This recipe was very good. I made it one night as a last minute idea, but i didn't have the right cheese so i used cheddar and pepper jack instead i was amazing. If you have any left over cheese sauce i would suggest making some eggs and english muffins and pouring the sauce on top, it's delicious.

I have been dying to try this recipe ever since I watched the show on it. I finally got all the ingredients and forgot white bread. SO, I had to use Santa Cruz sourdough. It was still fabulous. I don't know how it would taste with regular white bread, but with sourdough, it was supurb. My husband, and roommate's son praised me several times over for this one. Thanks so much Ina! You're inspiring.

User: Candace from Tucson, AZ    User Rating:
I don't think the Gruyere is the culprit in this recipe. I think it's the dijon mustard. Frankly, you don't need it. It adds a tang that mimics a salty flavor when combined with the cheese. I say leave out the mustard and you've got a keeper.

This was GREAT. I used French ham instead of VA baked ham, and I accidentally left the crusts on the bread, but it was better! I used potato bread, and my husband raved and raved about this dish. He requests it over and over. But, it is very rich, so this is a once in a while treat! This is the best recipe I have found for Croques! Using the Grueyre cheese is a must.

Why do people give bad reviews without a real reason?
04/07/2008 at 03:29am
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I seriously don't understand people that give bad reviews because they happened to have bought some bad quality cheese. Btw... Gruyere IS a type of swiss cheese. Maybe you meant Emmenthal? Maybe you should simply buy a better quality cheese instead of giving totally irrelevant bad reviews.

Absolutely wonderful ... I, too, used Swiss (no Gruyere at the produce market but it's from the same family). Rather than toasting in the oven, I trimmed the bread and then put it in the toaster (and I only had 5 grain bread). I did cut salt in half -- didn't need any additional. Decadently wonderful!

This recipe makes about four times the sauce that you need. It's very good, but the sauce and dijon mustard make it very rich so you can only eat a bit. Delicous.

Not really worth the trouble and expense

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
The cheese sauce was good (I was dipping bread in it as I waited for the sandwiches to bake), but at the end, it tasted like a ham sandwich. All the cheeses were expensive and there was a ton of grating to do. It's also hard to make for just a few people. I probably won't do this again unless for some reason 10+ people are coming to my house for lunch. I will keep the cheese sauce recipe around though - it could make a tasty warm dip with some more flavoring.

User: Julie from North Las Vegas, NV    User Rating:
I did alter the recipe slightly. I used 4 cups Gruyere and 1 cup Imported swiss. This cut the salty taste quite a bit. I also left out the grated Parmesan. Thats just over-kill. I also used a Sourough Frenchbread, and left the crusts on. This maintained the shaped nicely and added a little more crunch. It was excellent! Prep time was about 15 min. Not 5. Otherwise..fantastic meal.

This is a repeat!

This is very good if you like a nice sharp cheese flavor. Prep time is more than what is listed, I advise to have the cheeses grated, the milk warmed and the bread de-crusted before you start. Very good though, we'll be serving this to guests!

Wonderful dish, I made it with Giada's spicy bean soup and it was just perfect. RAVE reviews. Thanks to some reviews I used half Swiss, half Gruyere and it was great, plus was less expensive to make. I used deli chicken instead of ham. Who cares if parm cheese is not traditional - it TASTES GOOD!

I've tried several recipes for Croque Monsieur before, and this is the best one. The cheese sauce over the top, plus the melted cheese inside and out makes it the best. I made it with a bowl of soup. The name may look intimidating but it is really quick and easy.
