This is by far the best potatoe soup I have ever eaten. I would definately make this a couple times a month. the only thing I didn't like was the bacon bits, so I substituted them. I put chopped pieces of bacon in w/ the soup.

made changes (allergic to shrimp). Made as stated, but mixed 1/4 of half and half with 2 TBSP. corn starch to thicken. also added 10 strips of crumbled bacon and 1/2 c. cheese to soup. Came out great. Will definitely make it again.

I can't say enough about this soup. It is soooooooooooooooo good! I made it a couple of nights ago...when it was cold and rainy outside. It was perfect. Although, I did find that the potatoes took a bit longer than 15 minutes to cook. Also, I added a little more milk than the recipe called for...to make it creamier. It really hit the spot. My daughter and fiance loved it!! Thanks for this fabulous recipe. I'll be making this one again and again.

This soup(chowder) is awesome. I too made a few changes to it. I left the peels on the potateoes I love the skins. I used celery, onion, garlic in at first.I threw in a couple of more potatoes so i could pull them out and mash them up for consistency. I also added old bay,but be careful as it has alot of salt so dont add salt till the very end after you have tasted it. Got to have our vegeies si used corn and am going to add half a bag of frozen peas and carrots as well. My family is going to love it. Can't wait to try more of pauls recipes

My husband and I love potato soup and I've been wanting to find an easy and delicious recipe for it...WELL, I found it!!!! I just made the basic potato soup recipe, without the shrimp, because I wanted to try it regular first. It is really EASY, rich, and super yummy! The next day the soup was very thick, so I just added about a 1/2 a cup of milk and it was perfect once again! EXCELLENT SOUP!!!!!!!!!

I watched the show when Paula made this delicious soup and saw the reaction of her sons. I've never had potato soup before this one and I don't need to try another. This recipe was simple to prep and even easier to enjoy!!! I brought a small sample of it to work for my co-workers and they immediately said "I want the recipe!" ; they are both men. VERY GOOD soup! Don't forget to top it with the bacon and cheese, it just sets off!

I have made this recipe at least 100 times since I first discovered it. I had never been successful at cream soups before, but this is very easy. Sometimes I leave the shrimp out and add more potatoes. Some weeks I make a pot full for my daughter's house, one for my inlaw's and one for our own. Everyone just loves it!!! Paula's recipes can't be beat.

I made this tonight for dinner and it was great! I only made two small changes, I only used 1/4c butter instead of 1/2c and I sprinkled the shrimp with about 1 tablespoon of Old Bay Seasoning before throwing in soup, this gave it really good flavor. I would definitely reccommend using the Old Bay as it really seasons the soup well.

A few changes

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I loved this soup, but made a few changes when I made it. It saved a ton of time. I used 3 cans of diced potatoes instead of peeling and dicing potatoes myself. Instead of shrimp, I used 3 pouches of lump crab meat. You can find them in the canned tuna section of the grocery store. I also added 1/8 cup of sherry at the very end. I will continue to make this soup for a long long time.

I love Paula Deen. However...I did change the ingredients just a little to skim off a few calories. I did not add any half-and-half, I used the 4 cups of whole milk and I did not add any cheese (although I'm sure it would have been great.) And just for personal taste I put in mushrooms instead of onions. My family loved it...my 15 month old begged for more! Perfect after a day of raking the fall leaves.

Winter has finally set in and I am catching a cold. I wanted a warm bowl of soup for dinner, but also wanted to make sure my boyfriend wouldn't go to bed hungry. This soup solved the problem! I got my warm bowl of soup to knock off the winter chill and kick this cold in the butt and we both got full stomachs. Now I am going to send him off to clean the kitchen while I kick back on the couch and watch some food network! :) Thanks Paula.

I thought this looked like a yummy recipe so I tried it one evening. It took me forever to prepare all of the ingredients, from peeling & cooking the shrimp, chopping the onion & carrots, peeling and cutting the potatoes and frying the bacon (this was optional but definitely needed. Overall, it was good. he3 cosistency was perfect for a potato soup but the shrimp seemed to get lost and would have tasted the same without it. It definitely needs some more spice, tobasco seemed to help. I probably won't make it again b/c it took so long to prepare. Be sure to use a 4 qt. pan like it says or it won't all fit.

Fantastic every time. I've tried this a couple of ways - without shrimp (good ole tater soup), with peeled/deveined/cleaned shrimp added directly to pot (adds flavor to broth), with red potatoes (takes longer to get potatoes soft but yummy), with celery, a can of baby clams & diced hard boiled egg. Just plain good chowder!!

Its hard to find just a good potato soup. This one is declisous with out the shrimp. But with the shrimp it is to die for. The soup is so rich and thick you have to be careful when reheating or just keeping warm. I have made it several times and never found anyone that didn't have seconds or more.

I made this recipe and somebody actually told me it was the best potato soup they ever had! The only problem I had was that the milk tended to stick to the bottom of the pan, even with constant stirring, but this did not affect the taste of the soup. The potatoes also took a while to peel and prepare but it was well worth the effort. SO DELICIOUS

User: Kathleen from Norridgewock, ME    User Rating:
I have made this recipe at least eight times and always with rave reviews from my family and friends. I have shortened a few steps to make it come together even quicker. I parboil my potatoes about 2 minutes and drain because I think they cook down better. Also I buy pre-cooked extra large jumbo shrimp(we like at least two pounds of shrimp) at our local supermarket and all you need to do is thaw them for about a half an hour in very cold ice water. Peel the tails off cut them in half and add them at the end of cooking your soup and you are good to go. We live in New England and I always make either a seafood or fish chowdah' and this is definately a keeper. Thank you Paula ~ I enjoy your shows and all of the recipes I have made from watching you.

I am a big fan of Paula and have never cooked anything from her that I didn't like. I did alter this a bit....I used chicken broth instead of the cubes and added milk as well as the half and half. I steamed the shrimp with a little cajun seasoning. It is a delicious soup! It does need more fluid than the receipe calls for...I used 1 1/2 cans of chicken broth. When almost done I added chopped green onions to add color and more flavor...ummmmmm good!

I decreased the amount of onions and used heavy cream along with the milk. It wasnt thickening up the way I expected so I cheated and added a bit of potato flakes. It turned out nice and creamy. I dont usually eat potato soup, but I cleaned my bowl with this recipe. We skipped the shrimp this time, but next I'm going to try it with ham. Very good, easy recipe.

I made this today while it was snowing outside. This is the best potato soup I have ever had. My husband is extremely picky and even he loved it. I didn't put shrimp in it and I used 4 cups of half and half and 1 cup milk. It was nice and thick and oh so creamy. Paula you sure know how us southern folks like hearty meals.

I was disappointed in this dish. It was just no very tasty. Finally after I added some bacon to the soup and butter and plenty of salt and pepper it began to taste good. The shrimp didn't add a thing as far as taste.

I have tried to make this soup twice. The first time I burnt the milk so bad the pan had to be thrown out. Oh the stench! The second time I cooked it on lower heat and the potato took FOREVER to cook all the way through. Then it ended up tasting like a cream ladden mashed potato dish. Why? I want potato soup!!!

When I saw Paula's potatoe soup it looked like the same one my grandma made. I tryed Paula's version. It was phenomenal. It may not be the same recipe but it was more than close enough for me. Thank you Paula for your wonderful cooking and for bringing a little bit of her back to me.

Delicious but a little difficult

User: Kira from Tacoma, WA    User Rating:
The first pot I made burned terribly. You have to really keep the heat low on this one because of the milk, and you have to cook it much much longer than specified, unless you want to dice your potatoes into 1/4-inch chunks. Mine were smaller than 1-inch chunks and still took maybe an hour to cook, at which point I added the half & half and shrimp, stirred, and realized that quite a bit of the potatoes were still hard. Just be gentle with it and it will be ok. DO serve it with the bacon and cheese garnish. Everyone in the family loved it from 10 yrs old to hungry daddy. You might make a double batch, it saves in the fridge pretty well. I'll definitely make this again. Thanks Paula!

This is absolutely delicious! - I don't like shrimp so I made it with frozen corn - and the shredded cheese and crumbled bacon for garnish was such a nice touch/flavor addition I don't think we'll have it w/out them. I'm ditching my "baked potato soup" recipe that we used to love because this is better! I highly recommend it. Thanks Paula!

This soup was absoulutely perfect. It is a real stick-to-your-ribs type of recipe, so you don't even have to eat anything else with it. Be sure to cube the potoatoes small enough...maybe like the size of a die. Using the cheddar and bacon bits as garnish is all it needs. Now, make a homemade loaf of bread, and you go yourself a meal!

I don't make a lot of soups. I love them, but husband is not a big fan of soup unless it is thick, chunky, not tomato-based, and loaded with meat, a die-hard meat and potatoes man. Well, this fits the bill perfectly. The first time I made it, I didn't have shrimp but added some chunks of smoked chicken breasts I had and used lots of shredded cheddar and crumbled bacon on top. This time, I do have the shrimp and will be using that. On the first attempt, it did seem like I could never get it salt and peppered enough and had to keep adding more. This time I will add more salt, pepper and some hot pepper, which is how we like everything. Other than being a little bland (to our tastes), which is very easily cured, this soup really satisfies!
