I made this twice for the holidays and everyone loved it. The second time I added pecans to it and it tasted even better. I had a hard time keeping it together as balls, so the second time I made it into a casserole and it also turned out good.

This is a great dish. I always made candied sweet potato for Thanksgiving, never more, it will always be this sweet potatp ball dish from now on. It also is wonderful with ham. The whole family enjoyed at Christmas.

We have made these sweet potato balls the last few years and absolutely loved them. Two suggestions - let the potatoes cool before making the balls, they seem to hold together better. Make sure you use the whole nutmeg instead of ground nutmeg. The first few times I made these I couldn't find whole nutmeg but this year I managed to get the nutmeg and the fresh taste of the nutmeg made these superior tasting. Everyone loved them. If you reheat leftovers, the marshmallow dissolves. It still taste great, you just don't have the gooey marshmallow.

My husband loves sweet potatoes and after seeing Paula make this recipe on her show, I decided it would be a nice treat. They turned out to be amazing. They weren't too sweet, just dang tasty! The mix of texture makes this a very unique recipe that I will be making again and again. Y'all need to try it! Thank you Paula!

Great spin on a holiday staple

These are great for the holidays! I would suggest using the mini marshmellows to make smaller balls. The large ones are a bit too rich. Use a bit of food coloring to die the coconut red or green for the holidays. Super cute!

loved it (but modified it!)

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
Per other reviews about being too sweet, I used 1/3 cup sugar instead of 2/3, and rolled in chopped pecans instead of coconut. I also used half a large marshmallow and had no trouble with explosions. (!) Everyone absolutely loved this with our Thanksgiving dinner, and the shape held up very well in the fridge for microwaving later -- much less messy than storing a half-full casserole of traditional potatoes. Will DEFINITELY make this again!

really creative take on the traditional holiday dish
11/29/2007 at 07:07pm
User: Mary from San Jose, CA    User Rating:
I thought this recipe had good bones. I just made some modifications. Mine didn't blow up and didn't fall apart. My suggestion is to bake the sweet potatoes hours before you need them and let them cool completely to room temperature before peeling and using them. Poke the potatoes with a fork a few times. Bake the potatoes on the oven rack and put some foil or a pan underneath to catch the syrup that will drip down. Use the big long thin sweet potatoes, they are sweeter than the fat round ones. I agree with the reviewers who said the recipe is too sweet. I suggest you omit most of the brown sugar (I didn't use any sugar for my last batch including the sweet potato and the coconut mixture and they tasted really good). I didn't have any orange juice for one batch so I used Triple Sec and that was pretty tasty. I think you could substitute any flavorful liquor or juice. I added powdered ginger to one batch along with the cinnamon. The family liked the texture of macerated coconut from the health food grocer more than the sweetened coconut from the baking section of the regular grocer. This recipe is so simple that there is a lot you can do with it. Omit the coconut and use toasted nuts or try dried fruits (bake on silpat or parchment in that case). Don't mix anything into the potatoes and put the spices on the outside before rolling in coconut. Use your imagination to suit your family's tastes.

Sweet Disappointment...
11/23/2007 at 04:03pm
User: David from Haverhill, MA    User Rating:
This recipe tastes excellent, but it is not worth the trouble to go through the process of balling the sweet potato around the marshmallow and coating the balls with the coconut/sugar mixture. Just imagine forming loose, wet, mashed potatoes into a ball with your hands. It doesn't go well. Paula had trouble doing it on the show (which was very well downplayed by her majesty of southern cooking by the way but still noticeable) and you will have trouble doing it at home. My recommendation is to put the sweet potato mixture in a square 8 or 9" dish, cover with regular or preferably mini marshmallows, then cover with the coconut mixture. The coconut will still roast up nicely, and you will get the same scoop of gooey deliciousness from a dish with a spoon that you would get from a cookie sheet in a ball.

Great taste, everyone love them!!

My sister-in-law made this dish this year and everyone loved it, including my fiance who usually doesn't like sweet potatoes. It is a creative twist on an old favorite and I love the marshmallow center, you can hardly go wrong with that. I will include this in my future thanksgiving meals.

My 12 year old son helped me make these!
11/22/2007 at 05:48pm
User: JANIE from Pataskala, OH    User Rating:
I tried the sweet potato balls recipe before reading the reviews. I never really cared for sweet potatoes growing up, mostly because ours always came from a can and had no taste. I love real sweet potatoes so I thought I would give this recipe a shot. One problem though, nobody in my family likes coconut. No problem, I chopped up pecans and mixed them with the cinnamon and sugar mixture and then rolled the balls in it. My 12 year old son could not wait to help me with this dish! I formed the balls around the marshmallow and he rolled them in the pecan mixture. I think it helped tone down the sweetness of the potatoes. I also layered the bottom of my baking sheet with the pecan mixture so the potatoes got a really great gooey crunch on the bottoms. I wish I had read the reviews before I made these though, a muffin pan would have kept these little balls of joy together more. It really did not matter to my family-they were still delicious!! My 12 year son who helped me make these even ate one-and he NEVER eats his veggies!! Bravo Paula

Don't use canned sweet potato for this recipe!
11/21/2007 at 02:28pm
User: Lauren from New York, NY    User Rating:
I tried using canned sweet potato (since another reviewer posted that she did that), but it came out way too liquidy to form balls with it. I sort of had just messy piles on my cookie sheet that flattened out a bit while baking. It all tasted delicious, but looked nothing like the picture! ;-p Also, I used half the amount of sugar called for and thought it was plenty sweet. This is a very tasty side even if it ends up all served in a big bowl! ;-)

I first tried this recipe 2 years ago and it was a huge hit! It's easy, special, sweet and delicious. I've made it every year since and it's become one of my signature dishes for Thanksgiving. I love the slight orangy flavor along with the coconut - absolutely perfect. The only down side is that I worry about "exploding" the marshmallow so they never get quite as hot as maybe they could be.

Yummy and oh so good!!!

I was not a fan of sweet potatoes growing up. Once I made these, my family LOVED them! Finding the marshmallow in the middle is the best part of all - like a "Veggie Snowball"! I cut the marshamallow in half and make them a little smaller since I need to get the rest of the Thankgiving goodies on my plate, too! Momma never made sweet 'taters this yummy!!!

Sweet Potato Balls
11/18/2007 at 04:42pm
User: DEBORAH from FLINT, MI    User Rating:
These sweet potato balls are wonderful. However, I thought the balls were too large. Since I had so many other side dishes and several people to feed, I wanted more smaller balls. I made my balls only about 1 1/2 inches and used mini marshmallows instead of the large marshmallows (the marshmallows do expand). I also had a dilemma since a few of my guests did not like coconut. So, I divided the sugar and cinnamon mixture in 1/2 into 2 bowls and put 1/2 (one cup) of the coconut in one of the cinnamon & sugar bowls. In the other cinnamon & sugar bowl I added 1 cup of finely chopped pecans. I rolled 1/2 of the balls in the coconut mixture and the other 1/2 of the balls into the pecan mixture. I yielded about 12-15 balls and adjusted my cooking time to 12-15 minutes. Both the coconut and the pecan sweet potato balls were delicious (although I really did like the pecan balls a bit better). If anyone else tries this, let me know what you think. Thank you Paula Deen for yet another great recipe!

Super simple recipe, gooey and fun for the kids to help squish the sweet potatoes. One tip, I use large sized foil cupcake wrappers for a much neater appearance and they're easier to transfer from oven to serving platter and then to plates. Wow! These are so wonderful! I made them for our Thanksgiving dinner. I am making them again for our Christmas dinner. When I took my first bite, I was blown away with the flavor. It was like eating dessert in the middle of your meal. One other idea though. I have family members who don't like coconut. Can you imagine that?? Anyway, for them I rolled some of mine in choppped pecans instead of the coconut. They loved them just as well. Give me the coconut thought..YUM!!! But I will say, if you don't want your sweet potatoes too sweet, then try them rolled in the pecans.

My whole family loved them and requested I make thses every Thanksgiving.

I made this for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. They all thought it was very original and, unlike some of the other reviewers, didn't think it was too sweet. A really neat idea, I will be making these again. I may do half of them with pecans instead of coconut next time just for variety.

User: Felicia from Port Angeles, WA    User Rating:
Yes...these were messy to make, but if you made them with the right attitude they were a hoot! (just like Paula)! After reading the other reviews I used my kitchen sheers to cut about 1/3 off the marshmallow end just to make them a TAD smaller. Ya just have to get your hands in the mashed potatos and have at it! Ya mold them in a blob.. and make sure you cover all the marshmallow. Then..just roll them in the coconut mixture. I gave them an extra pat to stick all the goodies on well. Everyone liked them, but I felt the OJ kind of over powered the flavor of the Sweet potato, so I'll leave it out next time. I only had two *pop* and leak out marshmallow filling, but I made sure the balls touched each other to help hold them together. I baked them in a round white quiche dish, and served them in it also. It was a pretty presentation.

I really enjoyed making this recipe. I know our daughter will love to help when she gets older. The only issue was the orange was a little over powering. I only used a .25 of the peel it called for and no orange juice and all I tasted was orange. I also used pecans instead of coconut. Wonderful dish w/o the orange

I made these last year for Thanksgiving. Everyone who tried them loved them. Some people just want nothing to do with sweet potatoes, but when they tried them the really liked them. You do have to keep a careful watch on them, because if they bake too much, they will explode. One of mine exploded, but I got them out of the oven before any more did. I don't even like sweet potatoes much, but these were great, and I thought they were easy to make.

Kids love these!

My kids loved these for Thanksgiving! You need to bake the sweetpotatoes well and cool them so they hold their shape. Also, I used 3 minature marshmellows which didn't explode and were smaller, omitted sugar to the coconut, and tried chopped pecans for those who didn't like coconut. They look very pretty on the plate.

Great with a few modifications

We do rolled in chopped pecans not coconut and it was great. I read the reviews first and saw where some said it was too sweet and fell appart so I cut the sugar and added an egg to help it stay together. I probably cooked longer than because I wanted my pecans to be crunchy, many of my marshmellows burst out. But they were better. I think next time I will make a hole in the top for the marshmellow to come out and coat them. It adds to the crusty top.

This recipe is scrumptous! After trying the original recipe, I modified it by adding Chopped pecans to the coconut mixture. Absolutely delicious.

My husband has made these twice and put a little spin on the recipe. First we used less sugar on the out side- the granulated sugar can be a little gritty. When he made them for Christmas last year we tried them in the fryer, they held their shape better and cooked in a flash- delicious both ways. Great alternantive to traditional candied yams.

We always have a sweet potato casserole for Thanksgiving and I decided to cook this for my family on Thanksgiving because I wanted a special way to serve a traditional dish. My mother-in-law was watching as I began to roll the sweet potatos around the marshmallows and she started telling the entire family about how she remembered a long time ago friends had made these sweet potato balls. This led to great conversation and stories that lasted the entire day. The sweet potato balls were outstanding. The "surprise" in the middle really stuck out and everyone at the family table wanted the recipe. I gladly shared it with them. I think we have a new family tradition!
