Easy & Delicious

While I would not consider this a "jambalaya" recipe, I will say that it is excellent. It was very easy to put together, and made the whole house smell fantastic. I highly recommend this to any busy family.

Good, but one thing...

User: K from Lansing, MI    User Rating:
The only thing I would change about this recipe is to add 1 cup of uncooked rice about half hour before serving. Without adding the rice it makes this dish more of a thin gumbo than a thick jambalaya. Other than that it is a very good and easy recipe.

Good, but spicy

User: Monica from San Diego, CA    User Rating:
Quite good, but a bit spicy for me. Perhaps I'd try it again, with either a less spicy sausage or lighten up on the hot sauce. I did enjoy trying the jambalaya as it's always good to taste something new.

I served this to guests and they raved! I am here to tell you that children will eat anything Robin MIller cooks on tv even the spicy stuff. When they find out that it is a fifteen minute meal, they are ready to set the table.

I was a bit skeptical about this recipe, because of the Creole seasoning, but it was so easy. I followed the recipe to the letter, except I used Italian diced tomatoes, regular chicken broth, and kielbosa sausage. It was sooooo good!!! I was really surprised, and it was sooo easy. I loved it!!

Fabulous and Easy!

There are many variations of Jambalaya and Robin's version is one of the better ones. I am surprised that a few folks thought that her recipe was bland. The sausage must be spicy for Jambalaya to be tasty.

This is a great dish! A little soupy, so a few tablespoons of tomato paste at the end helps thicken it up a bit. My husband loved it - and I loved how easy it was!

User: Nichole from Tallahassee, FL    User Rating:
This is such an easy recipe to prepare, and it came out tasting so good. Both my husband and I loved it! Good flavor, and spicy (but not too much so). I did make a few modifications though. 1.) I didn't use shrimp, but 1lb (instead of 1/2) of andouille sausage. 2.) Instead of low sodium chicken broth I used a coffee mug full of boiled water + one chicken bouillon cube. 3.) When there was about an hour left, I added 2 cups of uncooked rice so it would end up being good and thick. I did the 7 hours on low method, fyi. I will definitely be making this again!

This is the first review I've done - I really enjoy the concept behind Robin's meals - I've made a few so far. This jambalaya was awesome. It was way better than I thought it would be. It was a little spicy - in a good way - and had great flavor. This will be part of my permanent rotation!

Disappointing

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I made this based on positive reviews also. Chicken was dry (I second another user who suggested leaving chicken whole), taste was bland, and overall the dish was just unimpressive. Sure, it was easy to prepare, but I would rather put a little more effort into something tasty that my kids might eat. Perhaps with different/more seasonings, dark chicken meat, and the rice to thicken it, it would have been more palatable...I dunno, okra too?

Bland... yuck!
10/30/2006 at 03:42pm
User: Caroline from Chicago, IL    User Rating:
Absolutely awful. Very watery... like a very bland soup. No way near the thickness or taste of real jambalaya. Extremely disappointed. Will never make this again. (I can't believe that some people actually ate this dish!) Not to waste what was already made, I added lots of Creole and seafood seasoning to create some flavor. Lots of salt and pepper added too.

My family loved it!

this was very good. I served it at a party and all 10 liked it very much. I added the rice to the pot before serving at the same time as the shrimp. Next time I would add 1 lb. of the sausage and a little more hot sauce since we like spicier food.

User: JASON from Little Rock, AR    User Rating:
I absolutely loved this dish. So easy, yet so delicious. I did not think that it was at all too spicey. I think some people may have used a whole can of peppers instead of just using two peppers like the recipe calls for. One modification of my own was to remove the brisket, then strain all the solids from the broth. I put the solids into a food processor and added about half of the remaining broth then pureed it for a wonderful sauce.

Passed on the crock pot
09/12/2006 at 05:37pm
User: Allison from Columbia, SC    User Rating:
I really like the taste of this recipe but after reading the reviews, realized it may have been because I passed on the crock pot. I sauteed my veggies and chicken prior to putting it together. I'm allergic to shrimp, so I used a whole keilbasa and 2 or 3 chicken breasts so it was pretty thick with meat. Then I cooked the whole thing in a dutch oven on the stove for a couple of hours. Still easy. And the whole family loved it.

changed it a little
09/09/2007 at 10:42pm
User: mary anne from mentor, OH    User Rating:
Absolutely excellent!! After reading at least 150 reviews, I prepared for: 1) NOT SPICY ENOUGH: I substituted Spicy v-8 for all liquid. Dissolved 2 cubes beef boullion in it. Also doubled amount of fresh garlic. 2) TOO MUCH LIQUID: I cooked a box of Zatairan's dirty rice for 25 min. on stove. Added it to the jambalaya, turned to high for 45 mins. My fam thought this was incredible. I'll make it again soon.

I made this recipe last night and it turned out very well. I did what other suggested and added the rice to the slowcooker 30 minutes before serving, because it was soupy. It worked well. However, i followed the recipe and it was not spicy. Eventhough others said it was TOO spicy, but it did not have any kick to it. So next time I will add more heat to it and more salt.

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I did use a hot portuguese sausage instead of andouille. I also followed the advice of other posters & added uncooked rice about 1/2hr before cooking time was up. I cooked on HIGH, it only took about 2 1/2 hrs! I did not add celery but did add 1/2 red pepper. I diced all veggies instead of chopping, after reading some people thought the veggies weren't cooked enough. Will definitely make this again!

Great, but needs a little altering

User: Rachel from Columbia, MO    User Rating:
This is one of my husband's and my fav recipes, but it needs a little altering. First off, it only took 5 hours on low to cook. Put the veggies in the last 2 hours of the cooking, so they still have flavor and texture. Delicious and spicy flavor and easy to make. Made it for a freezer club, and it worked really well.

I found this recipe to e rather good. Although I would not consider it the traditional jambalaya I would say that it is a very good dish. I did make a few adjustments like adding the rice to the dish 30 minutes before serving. I didnt try the tomatoe paste for thickness but 2 cups of rice soaked up the juices which made it non-soupy as other reviewers complained about. Great dish however and I am looking forward to making it again.

Read all the reviews and had my tastebuds set on a wonderful dish. What a disappointment. The smell while cooking was so awful I was asked to remove the slow cooker to the garage. The entire thing ended up in the trash. This is not jambalaya. There is no substitute for sauteing the vegetables as opposed to throwing everything into a pot and expecting something good to come of it. I can't believe a recipe could be this bad. What a waste of money!

I'm from south Louisiana, and this recipe isn't like jambalaya I grew up with, but the meal is superb. A really good blend of creole flavors and the chicken is very tender. This recipe is so easy and so delicious -- and it actually tastes better the next day! This is seriously some of the best jambalaya I've ever had. At the end of the cooking time, I ended up stirring the cooked rice into the jamalabya mixture to thicken it up -- it works beautifully, and the rice absorbs the wonderful flavors of the jambalaya. Even though it makes quite a bit, it won't last long. Also, try topping it with a little bit of shredded cheese, or sprinkle with a couple extra drops of hot sauce. Yum yum!

If you don't have time for the slow cooker , this meal still turns out great in a large pan. Kids loved it.A bit too hot for Kirbey. I used Louisianna hot sauce instead of cajun flavouring.

Yuck

This recipe is one bland, big soupy tomato mess! It has no flavor or spice at all... very disapointing!

Terrible -- Bland and Runny

First of all it's not jamabalaya since the rice isn't cooked with the meat and vegatables. That's the whole point of jambalaya. This version is thin and runny and very much underseasoned. I'd never make it again.

A hit for a cold winter night

I made this dish yesterday and served it to company last night. With 20 degree temps, this hot flavorful meal was a hit with all. I added more hot sauce to mine. Will serve the leftovers like a soup!

Really good!

This was pretty easy to make. I did all the prep work the night before so that helped. It made the house smell awsome all day. I did not use the same sausage as recommended but it was just as good. I also listened to everyone else and added the rice and let cook @ 30 min. My husband LOVED it! Even offered to take for leftovers!

Very Easy & Yummy

I made this with a few omissions. I used kielbasa sausage instead of adouille and eliminated the hot sauce. My children don't like spicy food. It was wonderful! Extra special with the addition of shrimp. I like the leftovers the next day over rice.

I was pretty disappointed when I made this recipe. I had read the reviews and it sounded like it would be great. I felt the sauce was way too thin and the chicken was tough and not tender at all.

just terrible

Very Good...Added Dirty Rice...Even Better!

My family really enjoyed this recipe...but I did add Zaterans Dirty rice to the slow cooker and I think that made a big difference. The only mistake I made was that I added it in the begining rather than waiting until I added the shrimp (so the rice was pretty mushy). Next time it will be perfect!

I made this for my husbands birthday and it was a huge hit! We honeymooned in New Orleans just before Katrina and found an excellent restaurant named Pearls near Hotel Monaco. They had the BEST jambalaya and I honestly didn't think I could compete. But this recipe comes pretty close. The secret I added was serve the jambalaya over rice and sprinkle sugar on top before digging in!

after reading earlier reviews, I added 2 teaspoons of cornstarch to 1/4 cup of chicken stock along with fresh raw shrimp about 1/2 hour before serving and this helped to thicken it. I was still not happy with the texture of the sausage in the finished product although the taste was good and it was easy to make.

Robin, I records Robin everyday that I enjoy her spirit that she projects out to her audience for quick and easy meals when you are juggling a hestic schedule working full-time, going to school, emergency pickup or last minute to pickup either my nieces, nephews, greatnephews, that meals has to be ready because their parents might have to work late and the kids needs to eat, get homework done or have to stay overnight. Cooking in the slow cooker has easy a lot of stress of getting the meal on the table in a timely manner.

Slow Cooker Jambalaya

User: Peter from New Richmond, WI    User Rating:
This didn't seem to cut the mustar as far as tasty Jambalaya goes. It was too salty - they mean it when the recipe calls for reduced-sodium chicen broth. Also, the recipe didn't create a rich sauce, but rather it was more watery slop. I'd stick to the traditional cooking of Jambalaya if I were you; it's really not that hard to make.

easy and delicious

It was easy and tasty, couldn't get the andouille at my supermarket, so I used chorizo instead, other than that, really good

Not bad

I only changed two things when I made this recipe: used chorizo and left out the shrimp. I think the chorizo made it too greasy, so I would like to try the recipe again. I agree with other comments saying the jambalaya wasn't thick enough. Maybe draining the tomatoes would help and adding the rice in the crockpot. Overall it was an okay recipe. There are many different things a person could do with the recipe, so I'm willing to make it again but with a few adjustments.

but I'll NEVER add uncooked rice to this recipe again, as was suggested below. 2 Cups of uncooked rice needs at least 4-5 cups of liquid in order to cook right. Just adding the rice alone aborbed all the liquid, and what I ended up with was half mush, half partially cooked rice. Next time I'm just going to serve it OVER white rice instead of trying to do it the lazy way. And it's more satisfying with sliced sausage than with diced. :)

Excellent dish!

I made this for the first time about a month ago and everyone loved it! Normally I have plenty of leftovers but they ate it like crazy and there were none. I'm making it again tonight and they're all excited. It's very tasty and not terribly time consuming. It's the only Jambalaya recipe that I actually enjoy making.

This recipe was alright. We enjoyed it but were not doing flips. The flavors are good and I followed another reviewer's advice and added the rice 30 minutes before the timer went off, which thickened the whole pot. We'll try it again, maybe increasing the sausage and decreasing the shrimp next time.

Oh, Yum!
