I followed the the recipie to letters But added more salt and sugar, i used a little sugar to bring the sweetness of the apples more. My husband and i liked it, i will make it again but about long but its not a recpie you will want to make very often, the meal have a a little sweet creamy light taste to it so if you like many seasoning in food this is definatly not something for you. Its a special meal and either you like it or you hate it.

Living in Chandler (Phoenix), AZ, I am a big fan of slow cooker dishes, especially during the summer. This is a good dish for a small crowd and I would definitely make it again. Using Granny Smith apples makes it not too sweet. I might add a little garlic to the mix next time; it goes well with a salad and bread.

Great Recipe.. just a little fix

This chicken rocks! I used red apples and left the skins on so that the apples wouldn't fall apart. I also used bone-in SKINLESS chicken thighs. While it was cooking I left the tops of the thighs meaty side up and slightly above the liquid, this allowed the flavor to intensify on the chicken. I served it with Jasmine rice, which was the perfect compliment to the light flavors of the chicken and apples. My whole family loved this meal!!!

Wonderful busy mom/wife dish

I love my slow cooker and this recipe reminds my why. The only different things I did was I used chicken breast and I didn't have rosemary so I may have altered the taste a bit. I also added sage and thyme because I just can't cook with celery without adding these great spices. I served this with brown rice and my entire family LOVED it! It smelled like holiday-time in my house!

My boyfriend and i just moved in together over Thanksgiving. We both have busy schedules but he does so much for me that I make a huge effort to have a home cooked meal for him most nights during the week. I purchased a slow cooker to accomplish this goal. I make big meals on the weekend that can be eaten throughout the week. This recipe was so delicious. Of course I added some of my own personal touches, like tons of garlic. I tried to get him to help by peeling the apples but he has never peeled anything before. That was funny. Some things us girls have to do ourselves if we want it done right. This was a perfect recipe and very yummy.

A slight variation
02/08/2008 at 09:39pm
User: marquita from sherwood, OR    User Rating:
After reading the reviews I was a little hesitant about making this dish. I didn't want to dislike it because it sounded so delicious. So I put my thinking cap on and came up with this variation...I seasoned the chicken w salt/pepper (to my liking) prior to putting them in the s.cooker. Instead of using 1 cup of Chicken Broth...I used Apple Juice, and instead of using 1/2 cup of Cream of Celery...I used Cream of Chicken. I reduced the rosemary to a tablespoon so that it didn't overpower the chicken. Now as I was eating this meal I appreciated how soft the flavors were. Everyone says this recipe is bland and needs more spices. NO...You have to realize that this isn't supposed to be a heavily flavored dish. It's supposed to be light and delicate.

**Revised Version - A HIT!!

User: Pamela from Draper, UT    User Rating:
Ok, after reading all the reviews and reading the ingredients list I decided to make a few modifications to this recipe & it turned out FABULOUS! My family devoured it! I used 2 large granny smith apples peeled & quartered. (They tend to not get mushy) 5 boneless/skinless chicken breasts Added the following ingredients: 2 Sweet Potatoes/yams cut into large cubes 4 stalks celery cut into large pieces 4-5 cloves minced or chopped garlic 1 T. Fresh thyme chopped 1 T. Fresh Sage chopped Instead of using the chicken broth & cream of celery soup, I used 1 c. white wine instead. Cook on HIGH for 4 - 4 1/2 hours. Scoop out juice into a saucepan, heat to boiling on stove & add 1/8 t. - 1/4 t. cinnamon. Thicken with cornstarch & water mixture (approx. 1 T. cornstarch to 1/2 c. hot water). Serve with chicken & vegetable/fruit mixture. I am telling you, my family devoured it and wanted more after we were done (I cooked 5 chicken breasts for a family of 4 and it wasn't enough!

Nothing special

User: Erin from Indianapolis, IN    User Rating:
This recipe seems to be missing a lot. So little flavor. After reading similar reviews, I added more of pretty much everything (herb-wise) for more flavor, and it didn't help. The apples and onions were inedible, they were so mushy. If we made this again, I would change pretty much everything. A miss.

Tasteless

User: LISA from St. Clairsville, OH    User Rating:
This smelled so good while it cooked. What a shame because it was actually tasteless. The chicken just tasted like chicken. NO flavor. I guess if you enjoy the taste of unseasoned plain chicken this would be good, but not for me. The apples turned to mush but the sauce and apples and onions weren't bad over the rice. My husband actually enjoyed it. He will tell me if a new recipe is worth making again. My kids wouldn't touch the chicken and they love chicken. I guess it all depends on how much you like bland food.

Yummy with a Pork Roast
01/14/2008 at 04:38pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I used this as a base recipe for a slow cooker pork roast. I added some potatoes, but everything else was the same. I cooked it on the long end (~8 hours on low) because I had more meat than called for in this recipe (had to have leftovers for pulled pork sandwiches). The meat was so tender and flavorful. The rosemary actually stuck with the meat and could still be tasted through the bbq sauce of the pulled pork dish. I will definitely make this again.

Good but not Wow

User: V from Richmond, CA    User Rating:
The apples really save this dish. The chicken comes out kinda tasteless (not a bad taste, just like it needs something), so when you take a bite of chicken with a bite of apple on the same fork it tastes very yummy. Chicken barely done at 8 hours on low, so kept it on low for another 30 minutes just to be sure.

Great Dish!

In fact, I've added it to my food blog (with a pic)...here's the link: http://sugarandspice-celeste.blogspot.com/2008/01/slow-cooker-chicken-with-rosemary.html The rosemary added a nice flavor and made the entire house smell very inviting. The chicken fell right off of the bone. We made some yummy sandwiches with the leftover chicken...topped with shredded mozarella cheese.

User: LAUREN from Boston, MA    User Rating:
I took 2 bone-in chicken breasts with the skin on them and placed them in the bottom of the crock pot. i seasoned them, added 1 cup of chicken broth, a buillon cube, bay leaves, rosemary, onion, celery, carrots, and potatoes. I seasoned the rest of the mixture, keeping a heavier hand on the salt especially because over time it disappears. I added two Granny Smith apples and one red apple 30 minutes before the end and it came out savory and perfect. Skip the cream of celery - 1 cup of liquid is more than enough for any crock pot recipe.

I really enjoy this meal for three reasons: it's healthy, it's EASY, and it's really tasty. I am not much of a cook but I have no problem with this recipe! I prefer to eat it as a soup instead of over rice, as I am steering away from overloading on carbs. I also choose to use boneless, skinless chicken breast and I feel it is still very tasty!

Sorta Boring...

User: Christina from Waterford, MI    User Rating:
This recipe was just okay, I don't know what happened to the apples, they disappeared. The sauce didn't seem to take on any of the apple flavors. I added a cup of white wine too for extra flavor. At the end, I added a little all spice and that seemed to help with the flavor a little but I think it may have done better with one or two more apples.

Too many onions!

I was careful to read other reviewers' comments and use their flavor suggestions even before making this dish myself, and it still turned out really bland. I ended up throwing it away because even with spice and flavoring additions, I was unable to doctor the chicken into making it palatable. The chicken was tender, but that was really the only positive thing about this dish.

after reading the other reviews, i doubled the soup, thinking that would help. first, i agree with the others, it was a glarpy, unattractive mess. the apples were not tasty because the chicken just didn't impart enough flavor on them; the liquid was soupy. we felt that the chicken was overcooked while the onions and apples were just barely done. i've made a similar recipe with browned pork ribs which is delicious but this one just didn't work.

Reading other posts I decided to make a few changes. I added garlic, white wine & grill seasoning for chicken. I had wanted to add a bay leaf too but forgot. The taste was very good w/ the changes. I will make again & try the bay leaf. I would use chicken w/ the skin on & remove before serving. Cooked 2 split breasts on hi for 2 hrs then lo for 1 & it was prefect.

This recipe was a hit with both my 14-month-old AND my husband. The soft chicken is so easy to pull off the bones for a toddler to eat, and my son apparently found the sweet taste appealing. My husband also liked the flavor and thought the chicken was delicious served over rice. I liked the combination of flavors, especially the rosemary. It didn't bother me that the apples mostly melted away into the sauce. Yum.

Great dinner for small family get together. Put food in crock pot while watching football on tv. Used skinless, boneless chicken breast and brown rice cooked in chicken broth. For a side I had small green beans and shallots sauted in olive oil and butter. Dinner was wonderful with an apple crostada for dessert with vanilla no-fat yogurt. Yum

My wife and I enjoyed this recipe with one note of recommendation. Get a sweet and firm variety of apple. The apple we used was dubbed by the vendor at the local farmer's market a "stewing apple." I don't remember the name but there was little flavor and a very coarse texture. The entree would have been great with a sweeter apple.

This recipe was so easy and tasted so good. I did not have a slow cooker, but my Nesco oven worked fine. Started the recipe on the roast setting 300 dergree for one hour. Then decreased the temp down to 250 for an additional 1hr and 20 min. I also added the whole can of Cream of celery soup. I only had one apple so I just added 1/4cup apple juice and 1 Apple, for an added flavor. I also used coarse salt and coarse ground black pepper making sure to salt and pepper both sides of the chicken. The smell from using the fresh Rosemary was wonderful. Thanks Robin

After reading the reviews I adjusted the recipe a bit and the results were GREAT!! Cut chicken broth to 1/2 cup, doubled salt and pepper amounts, and used 3 T. FRESH chopped rosemary. I also used cream of chicken with herb soup instead of cream of celery, and cut apples in quarters. Cooked on low for 6 hours. SUPER AND VERY EASY!

My husband liked this more than I did. I think I'll use Granny Smith or another heartier apple next time, or reduce cooking time so the apples don't turn into applesauce (even though I left the apples in quarter). I used boneless skinless chicken breasts and Italian seasoning because I didn't have rosemary, but it needed something else for more flavor. I also added some cornstarch mixed in chicken broth to thicken it up at the end. It did get better as it sat in the fridge for leftovers though.

As you'd expect from slow cooker chicken, the chicken was nice and tender and juicy, but that's about it. The onions and apples were relatively flavorless by the end of several hours of cooking, so the dish essentially is poached, slightly sweet, slightly oniony chicken. Very vanilla.

This was a wonderful recipe as far as ease and flavor. The only thing I might change is to use more chicken and mostly white meat. I think also to take the skin off before you cook would help as well. The apples were a delicious flavor with the rosemary. I think granny smiths cut somewhat thick would work well. This is a great meal for taking to someone's house or a nice dinner for your family that you can throw together quickly and let the cooker do the work.

I have been looking for a recipe for slow cooking chicken pieces for some time. Finally, I happened to catch this show and tried the recipe. I read the reviews first and took some of the advice. This was a VERY tasty way to cook individual chicken breasts, which is all I had at the time. I used cream of onion soup and added a bit of lemon zest and the flavor was out of this world. My teenage daughter's comment- "Next time make more chicken, there wasn't enough" Next time I may use legs and breasts, and I'll leave the apples in quarters. Cooking this on low for 6 hours just turns the apple slices to mush. Thanks for the wonderful recipe Robin!

I liked the idea of the chicken with apples and onions and the ease of the slow cooker. The only thing I really didn't like was that the meat came away from the bones, and the chicken bones can be quite small - I had to really look through before serving it to my kids. The flavor was good, I think I'd use more apples and salt and pepper, maybe experiment with different cream soups too.

I was very pleased with the way the chicken turned out. It was very tender and practically falling off the bones. The flavor of the sauce was okay, but a little bland. I will try the Granny Smith apples next time and cut them in bigger pieces. My husband gave this a higher rating that I did, so I averaged the scores and ended up with a four. So far I have found all of Robin's dishes (I've made four) to be rather bland and lacking in taste.
