I was looking for a simple, easy meal for dinner and found this one from Pauls. She said it was a favorite of Bobby's and now it is a favorite of my familys as well. It makes a ton so in the future I may half the recipe unless I am planning on freezing half. It is flavorful and delicious. I can't imagine a better meal on a cold evening.

Our family love's this recipe! Sometimes I used Italian flavored diced tomatoes or Mecixan style in addition to the crushed toms. Once the beef is browned, I add the tomatoes, then the macaroni and enough liquid to cover pasta and simmer until pasta is done (stir occasionally so it doesn't stick to the pan). That way I keep everything in one pan. I personally don't like doing dishes.

Bland

The recipe says it takes eight minutes, but there really is a great deal of prep time involved. It was extremely bland, and I would never bother with it again. I'm surprised, because Paula Deen is usually so reliable.

this was a good and very easy to make dish, however, i changed a few things. i cut the amount of beef almost in half and put alittle more pasta in. because of what other people wrote, i also put in extra spices and mixed the cheese into the dish. it was delicious, cheap, and easy. definitely worth while. next time i would either put more cheese in, or keep it out all together.

User: Terry from Houston, TX    User Rating:
After seeing the episode where Paula's sons made this recipe, I decided to give this a shot because it looked really good on the show. I omitted the bell peppers because I find them bitter but followed the rest pretty much the way it was written. Oh yeah, I almost forgot that I had read a review or two saying that it was kind of bland so I decided to use crushed tomatoes w/italian herbs to give it a little more zing. Overall I was happy with it but I thought the basil had a bit too much presence and I'll cut back on it next time. But my 1 and 5 year old daughters ate it up so I'll definitely be making it again.

Easy and good.

After reading some of the other reviews I made a couple of changes. I added a pinch of red pepper flakes,a tablespoon of sugar, a small can of tomato sauce and put some of the cheddar cheese in the casserole, not just on top. It turned out really good.

Bland - not enough tomato flavor
04/17/2008 at 12:43pm

Not enough tomato taste with just the canned crushed tomatoes in the recipe. I used Progresso crushed tomatoes in puree. I should have added a little tomato paste with it. I love Chili mac but this one didn't satisfy my family's tastebuds.

How can you go wrong with anything topped with cheese!?
04/13/2008 at 06:35pm
User: Jeannie from Laytonsville, MD    User Rating:
Tried this for the first time as a Sunday dinner casserole and my whole family liked it (all adults). Appreciated others reviews and took the advice to add cheese into the whole dish not just on top. Also did my own variation and added some fresh mushrooms while I was was cooking the onions, etc. Also, since some said it was bland (I didn't think so) I added a shot of hot sauce and it gave it a nice kick. Next time I would add more tomatoes/sauce than it called for. We thought it needed more.

User: Tryann from Bristow, VA    User Rating:
My husband and sons love this meal! I enjoyed it as well! I found the recipe to be bland with just the seasonings it called for, so I added a pack of McCormicks Zesty Spaghetti Seasoning to the mix. The spaghetti seasoning did not give the recipe a sphaghetti taste, it just enhanced the flavor. I also added a little sugar to balance out the crushed tomato. I will definitely make this again!

too dry- especially the next day
03/25/2008 at 07:46pm
User: Amanda from Lewisville, TX    User Rating:
I swear, it never looks the same as it does on the tv. I watched them make this and thought it would be good. It was ok and I really mean just ok. Way, way too dry. I even doubled the sauce and it was still too dry. I think there is too much meat in it too, but that's probably just me... not a huge, huge fan of beef, but I do like it in pasta, just not THAT much. I suggest to make the goulash instead of this one.

bland

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I gave it two stars because the aroma through out the house made you ready to eat dinner and I'm a big Paula fan. To eat it on the other hand was not as nice. It lacked flavor, and reminded me of box hamburger helper, this will not be a repeat meal. Whoever suggested to serve it at a shelter had a good idea in mind.

Comfort Meat

User: Pam from Burnsville, MN    User Rating:
This reminded me of a goulash my Mom used to make, but the cheese added something a little extra. I did put in a large can of tomatoe sauce and 2 cans of diced tomatoes with basil, oregano & garlic already in and that gave it a little extra seasoning. It still could use a little more sauce in my opinion, but it was still good and I will probably do a little more tweaking to get it just the way I like it.

I seasoned the meat with taco seasoning mix and it adds a lot more flavor. I also put cream cheese into pasta to add more flavor. It makes a lot - like most casseroles do - so get ready for left overs.

Unfortunately, my husband and I found this recipe lacking. Although easy to prepare, we found the flavors never melded together. The spices' flavors seemed to sit upon the casserole rather than creating a blend with the tomatoes, cheese, and meat.

Thank goodness for these reviews!

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
This is a great recipe, but I agree with my fellow reviewers that it definitely needs some modifications. First, I would brown the meat and then add it to the onion/pepper/garlic mixture. Second, it definitely needs more spices than the recipe calls for. I added a little bit of taco seasoning, red chili powder, and about 1/4 packet of ranch salad dressing mix, as well as Tabasco. (I like it HOT!) As everyone else here has said, it definitely needs more tomatoes, although my husband and I didn't mind the amount in the recipe. It's actually a very tasty dish. It makes ALOT, and tastes fantastic the next day. Happy cooking! :)

Made a half portion for dinner tonight. I used Trader Joe's organic tomato sauce since I didn't have time to pick up crushed tomatoes. For a creamier, cheesier consistency, I heated one can of Campbell's cheddar cheese soup mixed with 1/3 can of milk and 1/2 of the shredded cheddar cheese. I then mixed the cheese sauce to the beef and tomato mixture and cooked macaroni. Topped with the other 1/2 of shredded cheese. Simply delicious!

This was a very simple, quick, and long-lasting recipe. It makes a full 9x13 dish filled to the brim. I'm a college student, so I look for ways to stretch my money, and food, so this recipe was perfect. The ingredients aren't expensive, and I did not have the onion so I did not include it, yet it was still great. I recommend this to mothers, students, singles living alone. It's a great recipe all around.

User: Nicole from Edgewater Park, NJ    User Rating:
Let me start by saying that I am such a big fan of Paula's and I usually love her recipes, but this one was very disappointing. I followed the recipe exactly and it was the most bland dish I've ever tasted. I don't know why it was called macaroni and cheese when there wasn't much cheese in the recipe. At least not enough for such a big serving. I wouldn't recommend this dish to anyone.

I add mushrooms because Ilove them, and I use a cheddar mozzerella cheese mix instead of just the cheddar. I also sprinkle a little sugar in it to sweeten and take some of the acidity out. I've made this into a chili melt thing as well as a taco bake! It's a winner everytime!!

User: sherron from metairie, LA    User Rating:
This recipe was pretty good. I had expected it to taste somewhat Italian; however, it had more of a Mexican flavor to my taste. I did make several changes: I only used half a box of elbow macaroni and in place of the canned crushed tomatoes I used 1 l4oz. can of petite diced tomatoes and 2 small cans of Hunts tomato sauce. Both my husband and I enjoyed it, although he said he would prefer more sauce with it. Next time, I may double the amount of sauce.

After reading all the "bland" comments, I added a bayleaf, Paula's House seasoning, and Montreal steak seasoning, and about 1 tbsp. sugar. I then simmered the sauce for about an hour. I mixed half the cheese in it, then put the rest on top. It was over the top. Good recipe when given a few perks!

Where I live in Vietnam not all the recommended ingredients are available so I made a few substitutions. This reheated in the oven very nicely the next day and was a hit with children and adults alike.

Made this in a 6 quart dutch oven on a sailboat where I didn't have use of the oven, and it was excellent. Cooked the elbows al dente and set them aside to cool. Used nearly 4 lbs of ground beef that had to either be cooked or tossed overboard. Added extra American Cheese to the recipe. Let everything cook-up together in the covered dutchie on a low flame and the crew loved it.

This tasted very good, and was fairly easy to make. Serve a salad with it and you have a complete meal. I covered the dish with tin foil for the first 15 minutes and I think that keeps the pasta that is not quite covered from drying out.

This was so good, it will immediately move up to one of our family favorites, the ones you keep making over and over because you know they'll be loved and eaten! I tweaked mine a little because of time, using the frozen seasoned ground beef crumbles, all bottled spices and crushed garlic in a jar. I used a little less spices than called for and I thought it was the perfect blend of spice for us and our preteen daughters. I also halfed the recipe and have at least another dinner left! Thanks again Paula for a great and easy recipe!

I was amazed that it tasted so great. I added corn and carrots and it was a great way for my kids to eat their veggies. Will definitely make again!

I always make the recipe the original way before I start tinkering with it but I wish I had read the reviews on this dish first as well. The way the recipe is written is good but it could be a lot better if you follow some of the suggestions. I will add tomato sauce and definitely mix the cheese throughout next time.

A 9x13 pan?

User: Susan from Webster, NY    User Rating:
You only have to read the list of ingredients to know it won't fit in a 9x13 pan. I filled the biggest baking dish I had plus an 8x8. This dish was very bland and tasted like a dozen other recipes just like it. It's not that it's bad, but it's not even worth keeping a copy of. I mean, who hasn't thrown together some macaroni, hamburger and tomatoes for a quick meal?

User: Sue from Rochester, NY    User Rating:
You just have to read the ingredients in the recipe to know it's not all going to fit in a 9x13 pan. I had so much of this stuff left over I was able to use my largest pan plus an 8x8. Which was kind of a shame because it's not that good. Very blan. Needs more than 3 cups of the diced tomatoes and a lot more flavoring. It's so much like other recipes I've tried, or even made up on my own that it's just not worth saving a paper copy.

User: Rhonda from Arlington, TX    User Rating:
I loved how easy this receipe looked as put together by Paula's sons. It was really great. I added a few special things like rosemary, thyme. I was out of crushed red tomatoes, so had used stewed tomatoes. Since the stewed tomatoes made the tomatoe base somewhat sweeter, I added lemon juice and sour cream at the end. Although Extra Sharp Cheddar cheese is my favorite. I used Sharp Cheddar Cheese and it balanced out the dish very well. What an easy great idea. I love to experiment with different dishes and add my own flare. We really enjoyed this beefy dish.

My boyfriend and I loved it. Thanx Paula!

I like the recipe, but shame on Jamie for dumping hot beef fat down the sink! For someone who has been cooking for almost two decades, it was shocking to see him use such poor, eco-unfriendly cooking practices. It plugs up sewers and raises my rates! Since a cooking show should also teach best practices, someone needs to take him aside and show him the proper way to dispose of grease.

I have made this casserole twice. I followed some of the ideas of people before me. I used diced tomatoes and tomato sauce. I stirred half the cheese into the macaroni mixture. Yesterday, I took it to a potluck at my husband's club. People asked to take platefuls home with them. I also got asked for the recipe. It makes a lot so I bought a throwaway aluminum baking pan to hold it all. I would recommend this recipe. It tastes excellent on the second and third day, as well. Enjoy!
