My husband even loved this and he sells meat for a living. He is really picky about BBQ sauce too and he loved it. The brine is definitely worth it. Several days later I took the left overs to my mom and she called me to ask how I got it so moist.

Delicious recipe but make sure you don't use Heinz ketchup - too corn syrupy sweet. My cousin wanted me to use organic ketchup which tasted much better.

Very delicious, key is to let the chicken stay in the brine for a long period of time, I did for a whole day and let the sauce refigerate for a day too.

Excellent! I baked the chicken in the oven and only use about 1/3 of the sauce. To the sauce I added apricot preserves (all I had) , about 1/2 cup. I refrigerated the rest of the bbq sauce and planning on using it next time around.

Best chicken (for moistness)!!!
05/29/2008 at 01:03pm
User: Ryan from Ballston Lake, NY    User Rating:
The chicken turns out great, nice and juicy. We can never get the skin crispy thought, it just turns out like nasty rubber. The bbq sauce is very tasty, but it takes way too much time and turned out really thick for us. We find it easier just to buy a gourmet bbq sauce such as Kansas City Cowtown. We like to use the recipe on thighs and recommend either getting boneless or removing the skin so you do not end up wasting your bbq sauce on something that you're not going to eat.

User: Jon from Salt Lake City, UT    User Rating:
This chicken is so easy to make and it's so delicious! It's very much worth the time to let the chicken sit in the brine for a couple of hours. The result is incredibly moist a flavorful chicken. And the sauce is perfection! Great recipe!!!

User: SANDI from vernon, CT    User Rating:
This isa nn easy recipe, and great for company as no one has to stand over the grill for an hour! BUT, nowhere in the directions does it tell you whether you leave the thyme bundle wrapped with bacon in the whole time you cook it or you just saute it in the beginning. ALSO, instead of kitchen twine to wrap the bundle you can use waxed (no flavor) dental floss.

The name of this recipe is right...ultimate BBQ chicken. The brining makes the chicken incredibly moist without being salty. The sauce is very sweet (even with the addition of a few shakes of hot pepper sauce) but the flavor and consistency work great on the chicken. This is definitely a keeper.

I love making homemade BBQ sauce and this one did not disappoint. It has nice smokey flavor from the bacon and I used the smoked paprika. Very nice consistency. The chicken turned out great as the brine imparted a really good flavor into the meat. I grilled on my Weber using the indirect method as I only cooked the breasts. I cooked them slowly and they were delicious and juicy.

This recipe is fantastic. The brine certainly added moisture to the chicken. I love chicken served cold, especially BBQ chicken. The recipe calls for more sauce than you need, or I needed. I ended up making up another batch of leg quarters the following week.

User: heide from Joliet, IL    User Rating:
Never realized how easy the BBQ sauce was to make. It's alittle on the sweet side but works for my family. Take the time to brine, even if it's only 45 minutes. The chicken was nice & moist. I used bone-in breast instead. I even had enough leftover chicken to make a Southwest Chicken Salad for lunch.

I was reluctant to try this because he seems to use a lot of ingredients, plus his affiliation with applebee's makes me wonder. anyway, the chicken was awesome. we let it sit in the brine for 3 hours, and it was perfect. the bbq sauce is a lot of ingredients but is not tough to make, and its definitely a great sauce.

I stumbled upon this recipe and knew it would be delicious. I learned about brining the chicken from Tyler's episode for fried chicken. It really makes the difference. The sauce is beyond delicious. I'm making it again this weekend for our Fourth of July party.

User: Kimberly from Mountain View, WY    User Rating:
I hadn't ever made bbq chicken before - I always leave that kind of thing to my husband. But I decided to try this, and it is so easy and so good. I'm not even sure it should be classified as medium difficulty - maybe easy-medium. Some reviewers have said it's not worth the effort & to stay with bottled sauce, but this sauce is so much better than bottled with the fresh flavors, and it's not hard or time-consuming to make. The brine makes the chicken so juicy. Follow the recipe exactly, and you will have perfectly cooked chicken. The sauce is outstanding - my husband even asked me if I had any left over so that we could use it for pork tomorrow night. This one's a keeper!

I loved this chicken. I used breasts, thighs, and legs. Made the sauce, did the brine, grilled it, baked it, just the best BBQ chicken I've ever had. One minor adjustment I made was to broil for a couple minutes at the very last to get it crispier. So it's a bit of work, most things worthwhile are. I will make this again and again. Thanks Tyler!

We cooked the chix a little longer on the grill, but it was still sooo juicy! I would maybe raise the oven temp a bit to actually carmelize the sauce onto the chicken.

User: Kristina from Oakton, VA    User Rating:
I had never ventured to make barbecue sauce from scratch - - and had dabbled with brines and buttermilk marinades only just a bit. After watching Tyler make these recipes I knew I'd have to try. And it was COMPLETELY worth it. The chicken was succulent, melted off the bone and had that delicious charred barbecue flavor we all crave in the summer. I'm in love with Tyler now because even his coleslaw was exquisite and he uses BACON. Not a lot. Just a very keen recognition that the flavors it enhaces make the dishes superlative instead of ok. He's my hero. The other great part is that my daughter was able to make the sauces (she's 6). She put all the ingredients together and was able to take credit for creating an amazing coleslaw and a barbecue sauce to die for. I'm so glad I saw that show! We'll never have chicken any other way.

This is really the best barbequed chicken I've ever eaten! I like to make it in a Dutch oven over a campfire. Just follow the recipe as written, until the step where the bird goes into the oven. Instead, just place the chicken pieces in a deep aluminum cake pan, then place the cake pan on a rack in the bottom of a deep size 14 Dutch oven and bake with hot coals on top and bottom for 30- 40 minutes. Enjoy!

I've made this BBQ chicken several times and like it a lot. But the BBQ sauce is the best BBQ sauce I've ever had. I'll never buy BBQ sauce again since nothing can compare to this. BUT..... As serveral others have noted here, the recipe is so far off from what Tyler does on the show that I'm left to re-watch the show every time I make it. And then I must guess at how much of each ingredient to use since the web recipe amounts differ so much from the show. Glad I have the show recorded but c'mon Food Network, please fix the recipe on the web!!!

The sauce for this chicken is just amazing. I followed the directions as written, although realistically on an average day I am not going to have the time to follow all the steps to prepare the chicken. Next time I'm going to skip the brining process and just try baking the chicken for about 30 minutes, covered with foil, then remove the foil, top with the sauce and bake for another 20-25 minutes. This way it is a year round dish. Just the sauce alone is so good!

The chicken was tender, juicy and delicious, and the sauce was out of this world. After having made the chicken, however, I saw the episode on TV, and the TV recipe does, indeed, differ greatly from the printed recipe. For those concerned, however, HAVE NO FEAR - the printed recipe produced a BBQ chicken and sauce that are better than any I've ever had. Why mess with perfection?

User: David from Keller, TX    User Rating:
I loved the recipe, however, I watched the show, and did alter the printed recipe to what I saw on the show. For the brine, 2 handsfull salt and a half bag/box of brown sugar. For the Sauce, 1/2 package of bacon chopped, 1 large onion and 4 cloves of garlic. These were the things Tyler actually did on the show. It was a wonderful recipe, the left over chicken was also great! The barbeque sauce was also great, and unlike a couple of reviewers, is not to be missed. I have never had bottled sauce that tasted like this.

I didn't see the show so I don't know how the recipe online was different than the one on the air, so I had to guess on the modifications...I added a lot more salt and brown sugar to the brine. I also added more bacon when preparing the sauce. The end result was incredibly juicy and delicious - I would highly recommend making this sauce versus using bottled if you are going to take the time to brine the chicken.

This was very good bbq chicken due to the brining, which was very simple. However the bbq sauce was really not any better than some of the good bottled sauces you can find at your local supermarket, and definitely a lot more trouble than popping open a bottle. I would definitely skip making the sauce from scratch if I was going to make this again. I think that I will use this brine recipe everytime I grill or bake chicken from now on, though. It was a great result for very little trouble.
