Needed a bit of help

User: Sarah from Ny, NY    User Rating:
This recipe was tasty after a bit of sprucing up. I added some extra veggies that I had in the fridge (red onion, cucumber, red pepper, celery, and parsley). I also substituted rice vinegar instead on cider vinegar, used half canola oil / half sesame oil, added some red pepper flakes, and a pinch of salt and pepper. I put the noodles and nuts on the side and added them before I served the salad so they would not get soggy. The salad turned out yummy. I will definitely make again! Thanks to the other food networkers for the reviews and suggestions!

This is not a new or original receipe. I've been making Broccoli Slaw for years. Got the receipe from a friend. However, It's not necessary to use butter at all -- it just adds calories. In my receipe just add all the ingriedients, add the dressing, mix and wait for the compliments.

Wow! What a great recipe and soooo easy to make. I made this for friends, and had a huge positive response to the tastiness of the dish; and when they found out how easy it was to throw together --- I had them sold! To keep the fresh and light theme going, I paired this recipe with the Santa Fe Wraps. My friends were totally in awe because it wasn't the same old sandwich and salad! Thanks!

I did make double the dressing and used more than the original recipe called for and I also substituted pine nuts for the sunflower seeds. The flavor of this salad was very mild and goes great with a summer meal of burgers on the grill! I thought it was even better the next day and it will be a staple fokr our picnics this summer. (It will also be taken along for Fighting Illini tailgaiting this fall !!!!) Really good !

This salad was incredible! My husband is a very picky eater, and he likes his creamed cabbage. I sprung this one on him at a Sunday dinner. He loved it so much that he ate right out of the bowl with a big spoon, and he doesn't even like almonds! I will definately make this for a picnic this summer!

I served the slaw to a group of 10 "girls" {50-60year olds} last night and they asked for the recipe. The only thing that I did differently was to make it ahead so that the dressing could be absorbed in the slaw and I added the ramen noodles just before I served it so that they would remain crunchy. We girls have gotten together for about 25 years and always enjoy trying and sharing new recipes.

Thank you, thank you. I have tasted some form of this recipe, but this one was wonderful and so easy. Saw it this week, had all the ingredients on hand and made it for dinner this evening; halving the recipe; I added cooked chicken to make it a full meal. I did add a few drops of hot sauce to the dressing. My husband raved and asked me to keep the ingredients on hand. Wonderful.

The first time I made this I followed the directions perfectly. Although very good, it was a little bland. Second time I substituted rice vinegar for the apple cider vinegar. Substituted canola oil with a combination of peanut oil and sesame oil with a splash of chile oil. WOW! Talk about punching this up! NOW it's a family favorite. I call it "Oriental Slaw". DELICIOUS!

We had this for the first time when we had out of town relatives over for lunch. Everyone raved about it and wanted the recipe. The taste is great and the different textures make it interesting. People were surprised to find out it had broccoli in it so this would be good even for people who think they don't like broccoli.

User: Marilyn from Houston, TX    User Rating:
I just made this recipe for the second time. This time I used the bagged shredded cabbage instead of broccoli. I like the cabbage even better. I didn't buy the Ramen noodles this time but I had one leftover Oriental seasoning packet left from the last time so I used it. The salad still tastes great and is so easy. I didn't want to add the Ramen noodles this time because they really weren't crispy in the last salad. I'd love to find out where I can buy the crispy wontons that you find in other Asian salads and add those next time.

Luv'd it!

Since making this recipe for the first time a couple of months ago, I've probably made it a dozen times for family, company and pot lucks; it's always a hit! I did cut down on the butter, and for those friends who cannot handle the MSG in the Ramin seasoning packet, I substituted a little bit of finely chopped onion, garlic and ginger, and a splash of soy sauce and rice vinegar to give it the Asian flavor. And I definitely use extra nuts!

User: Alison from Jasper, GA    User Rating:
This slaw was very good the day I prepared it. However, I thought it would get even better when I ate it the next day. Because the noodles had sat in the dressing all night, they became soggy. I would recommend fixing the slaw except for the noodle/almond mixture and letting it sit over-night and then adding the noodles/almonds right before you serve it.

My friend made this slaw for a cookout. We were a little skeptical about trying at first b/c it looked so different... but after the first bite, you couldn't keep us away from the bowl. This dish is a GREAT recipe and very easy. It has a sweet yet salty taste that is not overpowering. Very light tasting with wonderful textures. We make it without the brocolli and with a little less oil and sugar (to be more healthy for those dieters out there). Over all the nuts and slaw mix are a good source of fiber, good fats (in the oil and nuts). This recipe is worth trying at your next event. It's a great conversation starter too.

This a dish that definitely benefits from sitting overnight. The flavors really intensify and makes the dish so much better. But, after tasting the next day I did feel that it was still lacking something. I added a cup of dried cranberries that had soaked in some hot water to soften. That made such a difference. I can't stop snacking on it - it is addictive. I used vegetable oil and next time will try canola just in case that makes a difference. And I think I will add even more nuts next time. It's really good!

Used olive oil, and way less of it in the dressing. I really loved the flavors and the crunch of the noodles, almonds and sunflower seeds with the broccoli slaw. It does sog out by the next day, but still tastes good.

User: Susan from Houston, TX    User Rating:
I made this recipe this past weekend and it was awful. I think the problem is in the dressing which was woefully lacking in flavor and tang. I also think the butter browned noodles were too strong, AND I only used 3 T. of butter vs. the 3/4 cup listed in the recipe. Next time I will dry roast these. I will use the slaw, noodles and almonds in my version but will use a completley different dressing that has a lot of tang. Perhaps Girard's Raspberry dressing cut with red wine vinegar to reduce so much sweetness.

The dressing in this recipe, as well as the toasted ramen noodles, are the same ingredients I use in a family favorite recipe called Romaine Crunch. Instead of brocolli slaw we use romaine lettuce and a cup of brocolli florets. I normally use toasted pecans instead of sunflower seeds. I love this dressing and usually make a double batch and keep the rest in the refrigerator since we have it pretty often in the warmer months. I'm looking forward to trying this recipe as soon as I find the brocolli slaw.

This is one of the best ways to get men and kids to eat vegetables. I prefer to add the ramen right before I serve in order to maintain the crunch which you can't help but love. Brilliant idea.

I halved the recipe and used the Oriental flavor packet. I used 1/2 the oil to start, and notice the salad was a little dry after marinating. I added 2 tablespoons of Sesame oil and tablespoon of soy sauce - wow, that really perked up the flavor.

Great! The crispness of the brocolli combined with the crunchiness of the dressing make this an exceptional accompaniment to fried fish and chicken, or baked ham. Expecially good with BBQ.

This is an awesome salad. Great alternative to ordinary cole slaw. I did adjust the recipe based on the other reviews...I decreased the butter to 1/2 stick, decreased the canola oil to 1/2 cup, added 3 tsp. toasted sesame oil, increased almonds and sunflower seeds to 1/2 cup each, and added both seasoning packets. It turned out great. I'll definitely be taking it as my dish to a pig roast next weekend!

I used regular coleslaw mix and I didn't cook a thing. I omitted the butter since I didn't saute. I used only 1/4 oil as most reviews said to do and I used extra dressing. Put ramen noodles in right before serving as they will get soggy. I liked this best served as soon as made. My picky teenager even loved this!!!

My daughter has food allergies, so this is a perfect alternative to regular coleslaw. I did have to alter the dressing a little as she can't have the seasoning packet from the ramen noodles, but it was great anyway. I just added garlic in it's place and a little black pepper. The salad itself has a wonderful flavor and it's VERY simple to prepare. I am making this as part of our Easter dinner and plan on adding dried cherries to it for a little added flair. My whole family truly enjoyed it and this will go in my permanent recipe files! Thank you Paula!!!

I made this tonight and really had to doctor it up. I cut back on the oil, but ended making a second batch of dressing with hardly any oil, some vinegar and more brown sugar. The salad was too dry. I also added raisins to sweeten up. I think I'll stick to my tried and true broccoli salad next time. Sorry, Paula.
