Mixed feelings

User: Jessica from Wisconsin Rapids, WI    User Rating:
I have mixed feelings about this one. Although I really like the flavors, the bananas, no matter how firm they were, still got too mushy. I would take others suggestions to use pineapple instead, also. The pineapple holds up better in cooking and you need that texture to help the flavor "pop."

The basic ingredients made this a pretty good breakfast casserole, but based on my comparison with other similar casseroles I've made, I would highly recommend making a few changes to the recipe as follows: *Eliminate buttering both sides of the bread slices (the butter makes the bread very soggy) *Eliminate the banannas (they turn brown once they're cut and cooked and are very mushy - not a great combination) *Use diced ham instead of deli slices - makes it much easier for cutting serving and eating)

NOT TOO BAD!

After seeing all the reviews, I didn't know what to think about this recipe. I decided to try it but I tweeked it alittle. I made two 8 x 8 pans instead of one 9 x 13 and made one with banana and one with pineapple. My husband and daughter prefered the pineapple and I liked the banana. It was fun to experiment with the two flavors.

Crazy but GOOD!

I know there have been some mixed reviews (to say the least) about this recipe. I happen to be one of those people who LOVED it! It's definitely a breakfast or brunch casserole (as Paula said), but it's great. I didn't have any ham or regular potato chips on hand, so I used deli sliced turkey and Original Pringles instead. My whole family enjoyed it, and it was nice to make something with ingredients that I didn't have to go to the store for. I just used what I had, and it still turned out great. My husband thought that the ham would have added extra flavor, but he liked it the way it was. One of my favorite parts of it was the crispy, crunchy top. The cheese, chips, bacon and custard really set up into something wonderfully salty and delicious. It was nice to have the sweet bananas to cut that. I wouldn't change a thing about this recipe. If you're adventurous try it!

Yes, We have no bananas

Overall this casserole works, except for the bananas. After reading the reviews, I went ahead and made it, however I cut everything in half, as I didn't need so much. It wouldn't be a bad dish to serve WITHOUT the bananas. I agree with others that maybe pineapple would be better. Paula missed the mark with this one, I wouldn't make it again.

As Paula would say...YUUM!

A lot of people don't like this recipe, but you have to be open to different flavors. I followed the recipe exactly as she said and it turned out wonderfully! I don't know if buttering each piece of toast was necessary because the casserole was just so moist with the eggs anyways. If you don't want to put bananas, you don't have to...I'm sure it tastes great even without them!

I was leery to try this recipe because the combination sounded just really wierd but it being a "Paula" recipe I was anxious to try it. I took it to work none the less for my birthday treat. I spent almost $15.00 on the ingredients and I could not believe how truly bad it was, I actually gagged. I now know not to try this again. I am one to try anything once, but I was really disappointed in this recipe.

This casserole was a new experience and we enjoyed it but prefer a less sweet taste. Lightly toasting the bread might have helped the consistency. My son-in-law thought the bananas were mushrooms! He had two helpings.

First let me say that I'm a HUGE fan of Paula Deen's cooking. That being said, I wouldn't recommend this recipe unless you absolutely LOVE bananas. If you're just mildly fond of bananas, you will probably be disappointed. I think this breakfast casserole would have been improved by making it savory instead of going for the sweet. My family (who likes just about everything I cook) was not impressed with this one and I ended up tossing about 1/2 of the leftover portions...sorry to say!

I'm giving this a 3 star. I substituted cubed ham for the deli ham because that's what I had on hand. My parents and older brother really liked this (so much so my Mom asked for the recipe). I thought it was just OK, but not something I'd likely make again. I was really surprised because my Dad doesn't like casseroles generally. He asked for seconds!

I'm a huge Paula fan so I hate to say this, but this recipe did not taste good. What made it bad was the bananas. I might try the recipe again and substitute sliced turkey breast for the bananas and also leave out the nutmeg. The suggestion below for pineapple also sounds good!

We tried the recipe for Cheesy ham and banana casserole last night. No one liked the bananas in the casserole and the casserole on a whole was not good. Everyone had to have something else to eat and the dogs ate our dinner. We love to watch Paula on TV and have enjoyed other recipes she has but not this one.

Just a little tweak

User: Shelly from Akron, OH    User Rating:
First time I tried it...not so good. A can of really, really well drained pineapple instead of the bananas did the trick. I also threw in about 1/2 cup of Gruyere in the topping and now I'm in love with this recipe. I think this is one reason why I love Paula's recipes so much - they're easy to adapt to different ingredients/tastes/textures. Keep it going, Paula!!

The cooked bananas leave an unpleasant after taste. Three of us tried the receipe without telling each other what we thought - all with the same result. We resorted to scraping off the bananas which made the top layer edible.

User: Heather from Houston, TX    User Rating:
I saw this casserole yesterday and thought the combo of ingredients sounded so odd that it must be really good. That on top of Paula's enthusiasm made me want to try it a couple of days later. Sadly, it was such a huge disappointment. No one would eat it. I ended up throwing it all out-- and what was on everyone's plate was also thrown out. The textures were wrong. The flavors were wrong. The dish was just wrong. Sorry, Paula, but this dish is not worth the time or money.

Truly a horrifying dish. In defense of Paula, I submit that we all have a few freakazoid taste buds that are very accepting of weird flavor combinations. While different for each of us, I think we all have them. This one wasn't resonating with my freakazoid taste buds, but obviously others had a different experience. I do like that Paula has the courage to just be a crazy cook, sometimes. GO PAULA.

I have to admit I was extremely dissapointed. This has been the only recipe of Paula's that gagged me. It was bland, soggy and the flavord just don't mix well. After 2 bites I threw the entire pan of it away. Even my dog wouldn't touch it. After spending $$$ espically 8.00 for a pound of deli sliced ham it was a big waster of money and time. I will forgive you this time Paula. You still rock!!

This seemed like a whimsical adventure. I thought that the pairing of these ingredients could turn out to be really bad or really good and wanted to try it. Actually, it's neither. It's...well, FOOD ...meaning sustenance. Paula said that the taste would be surprising. What was surprising is how unsurprising it was. After dinner, we gave the remainder to a co-worker who buys canned spaghetti from a vending machine for lunch. He'll love it.

This absolutely did not work as a favor combination for us. Funny thing, Paula mentioning people who liked pineapple on pizza, because that is what I ended up doing in order to salvage dinner, remade the dish using canned pineapple in place of the bananas and upping the cheddar cheese in the topping and ending up with a dish my guys really liked. This was the first time a "Paula" recipe got the thumbs down from my group.

Ok, so this is the first Paula Deen recipe I've made, and I must say I was very dissapointed. I went to the store to get bananas, and cheese, and came out spending $75. Then got home and forgot how many eggs she used so I pulled up the recipe and saw the reviews....Like many others, I thought...hey I'll try it. UGH. My 2 yr old wouldn't touch it. When I made him try a bite, and asked him if he wanted more he replied, "nope, no, uhuh." My fiance said I don't want you to be mad if I throw up, and the first bite I took was ok, so I made a serving, and the more I ate, the more I felt sick. I'm sorry but this was not a good recipe. And after reading all the reviews, I only used 1 banana. Waste of time, money, and calories.

Everyone loved the unusual combination, but the recipe on line has a flaw. When Paula did the recipe on TV she baked for 15 minutes. At least I thought so. Under cooking time the recipe shows 10 minutes, but then the recipe says to bake for 45 minutes. I went with what I saw on TV and baked for 15 minutes. Everyone loved. No wonder so many people are complaining. They are baking for 45 minutes and the bananas are black. LOL Food Network should check the transcript and see the real time for cooking this recipe.

I "tweaked" this recipe as well. When I saw this on TV I wanted to make it RIGHT AWAY so I used what I had on hand. I toasted and used pumpernickle bread, sliced BBQ Turkey, Velveeta cheese, pepperoni instead of baccon, and used fat free half and half and "I can't Believe it's Not Butter" spray. Also, I used baked lays instead of the regular chips. MAKE THIS RECIPE. YUMMMMMMMMMM.

My husband, daughterm and I all tried this recipe. The bananas didn't add anything to the taste that we were excited about. The bottom layer of bread was too soggy. I know I cooked it long enough for it was bubble and golden brown. We have been trying to figure out how to tweak it abit. Like leave out the bananas and bread, and maybe replace the bread with a layer of Hash browns, and also leave out the potatoe chips. It was edible, but I'm trying to figure out what to do with the leftovers, I hate to throw them out. I thought about putting a piece in a fry pan and see if it would cook up that bottom piece of bread alittle better.

This recipe was very easy to make. I made it for a family get together. The bananas threw everybody off. Most everyone tried it, but most didn't like it. The 2 pickiest eaters liked it though which surprised me. Some people tried to pick out the bananas, but they said that didn't work because the banana flavor was throughout the entire casserole. I didn't love it, but I like it.

Not a big hit

User: Rex from Bremerton, WA    User Rating:
Although I baked at 350 for 45 minutes as directed, the bottom slices of bread were soggy and uncooked, and you could not tell until you were ready to serve it. The Bananas were an interresting concept, but I just don't think they made a good combination with the other ingredients. There was no clear directions on how much deli ham to use. The deli sliced ham that I used was not tender enough to cut with a fork, causing guests to use steak knives to cut bite size portions.

I love Paula and most of her recipes are great, but this one just missed the mark. The banana flavor did not work with the other ingredients. I won't make this again.

My mom always asks, "It's good, but should I make it again?" The answer to this recipe is a resounding "YES!" Super-easy and delcious. I can suggest using bananas that are more on the green side. They seemed to hold up much better. You lose a little of the banana flavor, but they don't cook to mush or turn brown.

I love Paula Deen. I read the mixed reviews. One said if you probably like pineapple and ham you might be more inclined to like this. I do, so I thought I'd try it. What a waste of perfectly delicious ingredients! Nothing meshed together. It was so gross. My husband ate a serving but I couldn't take more than a few bites. I kept trying but just had to admit this was disgusting. My husband didn't eat the whole serving as intended, he separated out the ingredients and ate it like that. It just was an awful combination all together. Even though it still sounds good to me, the way it came out was awful. I followed all the directions except did not butter the bread because of some of the review tips.
