Too much trouble for not enough flavor

These cookies were ok, but they were too much trouble for how unspectacular they were. Cutting them out was a pain, the tuna can technique cut the dough great on the tops and bottoms but I had to cut all the sides out with knife. They eye holes were a pain to cut out and getting the candy in there was sticky and messy. I thought the cooking time was off, the first batch turned out way too crunch and I put them in less the next time. The icing had great flavor but the consistency was too runny.

The cookies came out hard, and with not much flavor. The icing was good, but was hard to spread evenly, so they didn't look anything like the picture. Which would be ok if they tasted good, but they didn't. I ended up throwing them away.

I followed this recipe exactly as written and it did not turn out anything like the picture. The cookie dough was too soft to ice and the icing just never got to the right consistency.
