I haven't had the best track record with Nigella recipes. I've wanted to love her, how can you not? But I managed to make a few clunkers. And then, after seeing it mentioned on a music message board of all places, I tried the Guinness cake. So went for this. And oh, it was wonderful. Perfect. I was worried it might be too dry or too moist and dense or whatever might go wrong. But it was perfection. You can taste the chocolate and honey. I used part Trader Joe's dark chocolate, part Callebut, and had no trace of bitterness as some of you hade. It is expensive though! The tubes of marzipan were nearly 6 dollars, so I tried the can of Solo almond paste, worried it would be a rough filling and not smooth...but it was perfect. I couldn't draw the stripes on the bees with a skewer, so tried putting the icing in a squeeze bottle and that worked a charm. I just ran it under a bit of hot water to loosen it, and piped quickly. I used a very sharp knife tip to start the almonds in, and didn't have much trouble with that. My bees were HUGE and I used toothpicks to put them up the sides of the cake, in a mass, adorable swarm. Everyone's always loved the taste of my cakes, but I'm not the swirly frosting Wilton 300 tips type (it's better to taste great than to look good). But this was, well it had a great buzz. Sorry!

Pretty but blande

Far too "watery" in flavour..lacks the richness of the ingredients. I'm sorry but a decadent cake that looks like glazed mud should feel sinful, rich and decadent. This was buzz-less haha :)

This is for "Pretty but blande"

Honey if it was far too "watery" in flavour..lacks the richness of the ingredients. Then that's your fault not Ms.Feasts that you don't know how to bake a good cake so next time don't bother making something you're not ready for, so BUZZ YOU!:)

EASY TO MAKE

This was a very easy cake to make. It seemed a bit on the dry side to us, though, so next time I will check it before the bake time. The cake did taste very good, though. Good chocolate flavor:)

This cake turned out really well! It was simple to prepare and turned out lovely! I am not an avid baker and baking in gerneral tends to intimidate me. However this recipe was a success!

Very decadent!

I made this cake for a bridal shower for my niece and it was a great winner! I was pleased with how easy the cake was to make. The honey flavor adds a delicate flavor to the chocolate. Together they are not too sweet, yet sweet enough. The bees were fun and easy to make, as was the frosting. Together, it was a perfect combination that had my guests oohing, aahing, and gushing over! And alas, no leftovers!

Makes a very moist cake that is so cute! Would try using milk chocolate in the icing to the reviewer with thought it was a little bitter. Also the type of honey can make a difference (Used clove honey)

It was so fun to make. It is even better the next day. Tastes like an expensive restaurant dessert. So rich!

Too Bitter

To me this cake seemed really bitter. It needed to be a little sweeter. This may be a hit with people who like bitter dark chocolate. The bee's were fun to make though!

Wonderfully honey-sweetened chocolate cake. Very dense and soft, and has a great consistency. The hot water does make it so moist. The marzipan bees are great for younger eaters.

This cake is powerful. I wanted to make it for a party because the bees are so cute. I did, and at first I didn't like it because it is kinda rich. But as I ate more, I wanted more. It's addictive! (the bees dont' taste all that good)

My coworkers and I loved this cake yesterday. I found it a bit time consuming to make but it was worth the effort. The recipe doesn't mention how to tell if the cake is done. I checked to make sure the a toothpick came out clean and that seemed to work fine.

I made this cake into mini muffins for a cake stall and it was fabulous!! instead of putting a bee on top i made yellow icing and put stripes across the top of the muffins and added eyes (icing again) and wings (almond slivers) Thank you Nigella, queen of cakes!

Rich, gooey, chocolatey, delicious!

I've made this cake twice and both times it was a hit. The honey is really what makes the cake - the subtle honey flavor in all that chocolate is really wonderful. The glaze is ooey gooey and so thick. But this is a VERY rich, quite heavy cake. Nigella never disappoints!

A little too sweet

This cake was incredibly moist and gooey and the glaze was the perfect way to finish it. I found this recipe neither bitter (!) nor dry (I wonder if they forgot the boiling water?!). I can only say that I would maybe try to use bittersweet i.s.o. semisweet chocolate and also lower the amount of sugar in my next attempt. Remember the recipe contains a whole cup of honey already. Best of all is the way it looks with little buzzing bees on top. What could be cuter?

Easy to make & Guest Worthy

I omitted the fancy bees as my husband & I were the only ones to eat the cake. I also substituted 8 oz. of vanilla yogurt for 1/2 cup butter; I used egg whites, too. Because others suggested to cook for 50 minutes, I took the cake out of the oven after 45-50 minutes of cook time. The chocolate cake was delcious, moist, dense, and my husband & I could taste the honey. The honey bee cake will be made again!

Very decadent!

I thought that for a beautiful cake and tasty cake, this recipe was very easy to follow. Also, I reduced the baking time to 50 minutes and the cake was way more moist than it would have been after 1 1/2 hrs. The kids had a blast with the bees and the cake was a hit at our dinner party!
