I tried this recipe. I love chocolate but this recipe almost made me never want it again. This was the worst cake I have ever tasted.

excellent

This recipe is easy and great. It can be made with splenda and is just as great.

Delicious!

Followed the suggestions of other reviewers and this caked turned out beautifully! This is the most complicated cake recipe I have ever tried (I made it for a friend with a wheat allergy) and I feared disaster, but it tasted amazing. I added some powdered sugar and vanilla to the whipped cream and instead of sprinkling the cake with powdered sugar, I sprinkled cinnamon over each dollop of whipped cream. It was perfect and everyone wanted the recipe!

Extra Long Cooking Time Needed

User: Meg from Chandler, AZ    User Rating:
Made this cake and almost gave up after 35 minutes and it was nearly raw. Had to took for an hour, but it was worth it. Would suggest following previous reviewer who put some granulated sugar on the pan before baking. Think this would help the batter "climb" up the pan and rise quicker. Excellent souffle-like texture. Used large Special Dark bars and it was perfect. Added a little sugar and real vanilla to whipped cream. Amazing cake!!!!!

Flourless Chocolate Cake

Cake did not bake well. Like other reviews, baked for 35 min. center was not done, bottom started to burn and did not release from pan very easy. Cake did not crack until removed from oven. Can you give me any help as to what might have gone wrong?

Taste's good, but...

User: michelle from hackettstown, NJ    User Rating:
This cake cannot be done in 20-25 minutes. At least 40, as another reviewer said. And, since it took so long, the edges were dry, but the center was moist. I saw another receipe that bakes a simliar cake in a water bath, maybe that would make a difference. I did enjoy the cake, but maybe Tyler should revisit the cake to try to improve the cooking time sor something.

Didn't taste flourless at all. Light but rich.

User: Stacie from Redondo Beach, CA    User Rating:
This cake was worth the trouble and lasted well. I did however separate into two smaller cake pans and covered in chocolate ganache. My friends thought the batter seemed so light despite no flour due to the whipped eggwhites. Unlike other flourless cakes that are usually very dense.

Fantastic!

I poured over a ganache of 50% chocolate and 50% whipping cream and left to set in the fridge overnight: perfect! It has a much stronger chocolate flavor than cakes with flour. I also added walnuts, delicious! Make sure you use the best chocolate you can get, because all the flavor comes from it.

Very Chocolatey

User: mel from san francisco, CA    User Rating:
I was very impressed with the way the cake turned out. The only thing was the presentation of the cake after it cooled down, it deflated to half its height when I took it out of the oven. The cake has a very light and fluffy texture. Pair it with a scoop of ice cream...Mmmm!

chocolicious!

User: Seren from cooper city, FL    User Rating:
The end result was absolutely mouth-watering; however i found that the bittersweet chocolate was difficult to melt with the amount of butter in the recipe, and therefore i had to add an additional stick of butter to the chocolate.

The only word to describe this cake is divine. I used semi-sweet chocolate and it was still plenty bitter. MAKE THIS CAKE! You won't be let down.

User: Liz from Columbus, OH    User Rating:
This cake was amazing! Mine baked properly within the alotted time (25 min) and it came out rich and dense and delicious. I made a choclate ganache to go on top and served it with vanilla ice cream. My friend said it was so good he'd have sex with this cake! Needless to say it went over well! It refridgerated well and tasted just as good cold.

This is a decadant dessert. I think I liked it better day two. The chocolate seemed richer. Very delicious. It will impress all my friends and is easy to make.

User: LuAnne from Shiocton, WI    User Rating:
Not really what I expected. The cake was good, but it just tastes different. It is not sweet, very chocolate and light in texture. I guess I was in the mood for a heavy, sweet chocolate cake when I made this. I added vanilla, and baked it longer than directed. Try it, you really can't go wrong with any of Tyler's recipes, they are all good.

Great

This is so good. Very chocolatey. My only complaint is the whipped cream I did not really like it so I used store bought. Other than that it was simple to make and tastes great.

works with Splenda
05/06/2007 at 01:20pm
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I substituted Splenda (granulated, not packet) 1:1 for the sugar for a diabetic-friendly recipe, and the cake turned out well. No sugar-substitute aftertaste. Also used Ghiradelli bittersweet chips to save time on chopping and still had a rich dark chocolate flavor. The cake did not crack though, not sure if that was the Splenda or too much mixing (either at the egg yolk whisking or egg white folding stage).

Yummy! Very rich and chocolatey!

User: Pia from Los Angeles, CA    User Rating:
I tried this recipe twice, first with one stick of butter from this recipe, and the second one with two sticks of butter, as I saw on Tyler's Ultimate. The first one turned out a little dry but it has very good flavor. I would suggest making it with 2 sticks of butter to make it more moist. A dash of vanilla wouldn't hurt too!

Yum-o!

I watched an episode where Tyler Florence cooked a delicious, fall off the bone roast and the perfect accompanying dessert, the flourless chocolate cake. I have had the f.c.c. in a restaurant and have wondered how to replicate it for myself. The way Tyler taught me to make the cake was well informed. My cake turned out beautifully, thanks Tyler.

fantastic but increase cooking time

User: kelly from cincinnati, OH    User Rating:
i had to make this twice, because my dog ate half of the first one (not good). i would not change a thing except for the fact that the first time i baked it for 30 minutes, and that was not long enough. the middle was gooey, and this isn't a molten chocolate cake - it shouldn't have turned out that way. the second time i cooked it 40-42 minutes and it was cooked all the way through. two other things - i did butter my pan and then dusted it with granulated sugar, which was nice. i also used a cheesecake pan (one in which the bottom comes out) and it worked out very well.

Cupcake variation
02/27/2007 at 10:23pm
User: Michelle from cheyenne, WY    User Rating:
I made this recipe into cupcakes for my father-in-law's birthday. He is wheat intollerant and this worked perfectly. The recipe makes 40-44 cupcakes. I lined the pans with cupcake papers (spraying the paper with cooking spray didn't seem to make a difference) they came out easily. Cook for 15-17 minutes depending on your oven. I could only cook 12 at a time. The batter stayed on the counter in a cool bowl and, in the end, all the batches turned out the same. I wouldn't say they lost anything by having the batter lose some of it's air. Overall, I'm very happy with this recipe!

I saw this demonstrated on TV by Tyler and I saw him using 2 sticks of butter. I followed the recipe as written the first time and found that the cake needed to be cooked for twice as long. It was still delightful but crumbly. I will make it again with the 2 sticks of butter and expect an improved version.

This is a great chocolate dessert. I was initially disappointed when I tried it as written in the recipe. I felt that there was no depth to all of that good chocolate used. I tried the recipe a second time, but this time I added a little vanilla and coffee. Wow! What a difference it made to the flavor of the cake--excellent!

I read other reviews and thought this cake would be great. The instructions are wrong, you need to bake this cake 40 mins. The cake came out OK, not nearly fudgy enough. Not worth the $12.00 in chocolate. I won't make it again.

I too had to double the time it took to bake this cake, so it took me more like 40 minutes. Also, I was a bit disappointed with the instructions. It doesn't say if eggs should be at room temperature and if the butter should be at room temperature (although I did make sure that the eggs and butter were at room temp. b/c of previous baking experience) so it just was a bit off on baking time and some details. The cake turned out very good and rich. I don't even think it needs anything alongside! Definitely a chocoholics dream.

I have to admit that I was a little skeptical reading the ingredient list but I was wrong... this was an amazing desert that got rave reviews and requests for seconds! I had to cook the cake longer than the suggested time but kept a close eye out for the "cracking" and it was perfectly done. Thanks for a great recipe!

User: Maria from Ledyard, CT    User Rating:
I was not sure what to expect but it came out great. I cooked it for almost 40 minutes at 350F and it came out perfect. The trick might be to take it out at first signs of the "cracking" effect. I served it along with a scoop of Blackberry Cabernet sorbet instead of the whipped cream. Fancy looking but not stuffy! Will make again. Thanks Tyler.

Ultimate Chocolate Cake - REALLY!!!

User: Victoria from Concord, CA    User Rating:
I loved the texture of this cake, unlike anything I have ever tasted. The flavor of the chocolate is so intense and it is not overly sweet. I served this to guests last weekend and it was a big hit.... we made one small change, instead of serving with whipped cream, we served it was a drizzle of chocolate sauce spiced with a touch of orange extract. It was a great finish after eating home made Lasagne, salad, and toasted garlic bread.
