This dish got a unanimous thumbs down from my family. It looked very sloppy and tasted awful. Not suitable for a holiday meal.

Excellent for Christmas Dinner

I thought this recipe was excellent. My family does not drink so I substituted the cognac with Chicken stock. Excellent dish. It was a hit with everyone.

guests loved it when I served it at thanksgiving. It was easy to make and a great alternative to the traditional icky green bean casserole. It will be come a permanent T-giving dish.

Easy and Elegant

This recipe replaces the ubiquitous green bean casserole. We tried it for the first time on Thanksgiving and it was a big hit. It was good because I have a small oven and a large turkey so a top of the stove recipe was very convenient! I chose not to use the whole package of garlic herb sauce mix so the flavor of the vegetables was able to come through. Because you are zapping the peas and green beans in the microwave, they are al dente to perfection and even the day after were wonderful. I usually have to throw away some leftovers but not this time! We are making them again for Christmas dinner with our Crown Roast of Pork!

Delicious side or main dish

User: KATHI from North Babylon, NY    User Rating:
I'm glad I didn't read the reviews prior to making this dish because I might have skipped it and missed out on a delicious treat. My husband and I really enjoyed this, and we both felt that it would have made an excellent main dish since it was very filling. We did modify the original recipe a bit--we substituted white wine for the cognac and used thick-cut bacon, and we used fresh string beans rather than frozen. I think it is very important to find the right sauce mix, which we had to hunt for a bit. We made the full recipe and had enough leftover for lunch the following day. Next time, I'm thinking of sauteeing some mushrooms to add to it, just for some variety on the color and texture.

You'll be stuck with a lot of leftovers

Just ok

User: Michelle from Euless, TX    User Rating:
it was too much work with little taste. I had to add extra seasoning to spice it up a little more. The presentation was ok, not as thick and creamy as shown on t.v. I will stick with the traditional thanksgiving greenbean casserole next year.

Sickening

The sauce was truly sickening. Please taste it before using it on veggies.

The flavor was very bad

VERY PECULIAR TASTING

User: Anonymous    User Rating:
The vegetables were ruined by the peculiar combination of the (too) salty seasoning packet and the brandy. Universally disliked.

surprisingly mild

User: angela from cotati, CA    User Rating:
surprisingly mild for how I imagined. I used pear juice in place of the cognac, but I'll try it again with brandy next time. Lovely presentation. Could be better with fresh vegetables too.

My family didn't care for it one bit

User: Iris from Akron, OH    User Rating:
No one would eat more than a polite bite or two of this side dish. I left out the cognac (which IS brandy, by the way) as children were eating it -- or at least I planned on them eating it -- they didn't actually put it in their mouth. I'd skip this one, friends.

Pretty good

Much better than the "traditional" casserole. I used brandy instead of congac and white onions as opposed to red. Everybody loved it and I was even asked for the recipe.

BIG Thanksgiving hit

Family loved it. It is a bit different and the cognac gives it a bite, but it's a nice change from the boring green bean casserole my MIL insists on making every year. This recipe went over well with my family.

Delicious and Easy!

I love Sandra's recipes, but this one has a bit too much in it. I think using just mushroom soup with this would be a little better. Probably won't make again.

Just Not Good

User: Janelle from Mountain Home, AR    User Rating:
I am not sure how to politely say that this did not look very appetizing. It also did not taste very good. The salty sauce killed the vegetables.

maybe it was the cognac

Looks better than it tastes

User: Jen from Lawrenceburg, KY    User Rating:
I was really excited to be making this, it just looks like it tastes GREAT! However I couldnt find the correct seasoning packet to use... so I used a knorr white sauce package...that was too lacking in flavor. I fixed for Thanksgiving and had a ton of leftovers because no one liked it... not even me. I may try this again just because the presentation looks so grand, but will use a different kind of sauce.

Hmmmm

I just don't know

User: Carly from Shelton, WA    User Rating:
Now I should start buy saying I didn't try the recipe as it was directed because I read all the reviews and thought they were probably right. So, I made this my own and it was great. Because everyone said it was to salty, I only used half the packet of flavor. Those packets are LOADED with sodium, its crazy. I also used pearl onions instead of sliced red onions, because its more festive for thanksgiving :) I didn't use peas, because my husband is picky..I just bought two packs of the fancy green and white frozem green beans. Also, we don't drink so I just use water instead on cognac. I know I totally did my own thing here.. but it had a beautiful presentation and got rave reviews! I hope this helps

only a few would taste it and none of them finished their serving. I have lots left over. I don't really like it either.

This was awful!!!!

The nice vegetablesa re totally obscured by a hideously salty sauce. You can taste nothing but salt and cognac. It was worse than awful.

A bit convoluted
11/19/2007 at 09:58am
User: Anonymous    User Rating:
I omitted the garlic herb sauce and the dish was actually pretty good. However, the appearance of it was so offputting, no one took more than a "courtesy" portion. They said the taste was good but it didn't look very appetizing. I think I'll tweak a couple more ingredients and give it another whack.

WOW

Too much onion

I Love different veggie recipes. Couldn't find that sauce packet, but a substitute was OK. A little too saucy, so I added more veggies. But definately "disguises" veggies for those who hate the green stuff...

The sauce was inedible

Everyone at my Thanksgiving table could not say anything else but how wonderful the dish was. Not only was it affordable, easy to make,it was fun! I saw the Holiday program when Sandra was making it, the first thing I thought to myself was, no way am I going to be able to make that dish! But to my surprise I DID!!! Another thing I don't usually make recipes from TV but I took the time to get on the web site. I am so thankful because, I'm going to make the same recipe next year! Thanks to Sanda Lee Mrs Vienna Aquilar Victorville, California

It was a hit with my dinner crowd. They are asking for the recipe. It is a rich recipe but was great with prime rib, potatoes and the trimmings.
