This recipe is easy and yummy although the cooking time takes much less than 25 mins - test at 18 mins. I didn't do the peanut butter icing but substituted a vanilla cream cheese instead.

Great Concept, ok recipe

I just made the cupcakes last night and they came out alright. I think that because of the peanut butter frosting, the cake needed to be a bit more moist. I was surprised how thick the batter was. Next time I will probably add a little bit more liquid to the batter so they come out more moist. Since the batter is so thick you have to be really careful not to over cook them. My cupcakes only took 18 min to cook versus the 20-25 recommended.

These cupcakes are incredible!!!!!

These cupcakes are sooooo great. They turned out delicious, just like Reeses Peanut Butter cups!!! Mine were so moist, but they crumbled a bit-they need to be more dense. Does anyone have advice to correct this? Did I overmix? Less sour cream? I will make these again and again. I was able to make 20 cupcakes, with the perfect amount of frosting! Make these!

Deliciously Decadent Cupcakes

I've been wanting to make these cupcakes for quite some time, and I'm so glad I finally did. The combination of flavors is amazing, and the cupcake itself is moist, as long as you don't overbake it as some raters did, and it's not too sweet, like most of Ina's recipes. It's true that the recipe yields more like 24 cupcakes than 12-15. I substituted chunky peanut butter for the frosting because I did not have creamy, and it's still a spectacular frosting and so easy!

TOTALLY ROCKS!!!

I made these last night and blech! I ended up tossing the cupcakes! The batter tasted delicious was almost frosting-like, but after they were baked, they were bitter and had almost no sweetness to them. It was almost like there was no sugar in them at all. The icing was amazing though.

Amazing!

I made these cupcakes last night for my nephew's birthday and they were fantastic! Especially the peanut butter icing. They were super simple to make and so much better than a boxed cake! If your cupcakes turned out dry, you baked them too long.

OH MY GOODNESS !!!! :-) I ended up having to make another batch for my neighbors and other family members. They are double deeee..licious!!!

I made these tonight and expected them to turn out dry the way other people rated them. They came out perfect! I didn't give 5 stars because the chocolate mix could have been a little sweeter, but overall these are great!

When I was making this recipe and tasted the batter, I could not believe how light and delicious it was. However, when I baked the cupcakes, they came out dry and slightly bland, not sweet enough. So, I thought I had done something incorrectly I made the cupcakes a week later...same result. I found them very crumbly and dry. The icing was amazing. I've made it several times and used it on other desserts and treats as frosting...fabulous.

The peanut butter icing is out of this world! However, I was disappointed with the chocolate cake recipe. You would be better off using a box cake. The last time I made these I used the chocolate cake recipe from the back of a Hershey's cocoa box - this is a much better chocolate cake recipe. Whenever I make this I'm always asked for the peanut butter icing recipe. Love the icing!!!

I am a HUGE Ina fan. Every single recipe I've ever made of hers has been a success. I don't know what happened with these cupcakes, though. Maybe someone can help- they just didn't rise. Is it the lack of baking powder in the recipe?? I didn't even get around to making the icing (which looks delicious) because I had to throw out my whole flat batch. Any ideas??

PERFECTLY AMAZING!!!!!!

User: Megan from Dayton, OR    User Rating:
I knew I would love these when I watched Ina make them. Instead of making cupcakes I poured the batter into a 9x13 pan, and baked until the cake tester had small crumbs on it. I made the cake and pb frosting exactly like the recipe stated and both turned out perfect!!!! And yes, the frosting recipe does make enough for a 9x13 pan, in fact it was maybe a touch to pb rich for me--I might cut it back a little next time. But I definately found my new favorite chocolate cake!!!!!

These cupcakes are so delicious and the icing is so rich. Peanut butter and chocolate really is the perfect combo. The sour cream makes the cake super moist. If you follow her directions properly, there is no way that these cupcakes will be dry and mealy as some other reviews suggest. Thanks Ina!

I love Ina and have made several of her recipes with great results, but (and it pains me to say this) I had to throw these cupcakes out because no one would eat them! The only reason I am giving it two stars is because the frosting was incredible. Otherwise, the cupcake was surprisingly dry and basically tasted like a bite of crumbly cocoa powder. I am so bummed out because I thought these looked great! I will just have to search for a better chocolate cupcake recipe to put this delicious frosting on.

These cupcakes and icing are out of this world. I did deviate a little bit from the cupcake recipe by adding semisweet choolate chips. Other then that I made it spot on and it was incredible. I made them for my boyfriend's birthday supper which I rounded out with a nice baked ziti, and salad. He was very impressed with these and he doesn't even like sweets. Ina, I don't know if you read thee reviews or not but I think your recipes are wonderful and very appealing. you have definately helped boost my culinary skills and I beleive you ARE the Julia Child of this generation. User: JENNIFER from Cary, NC    User Rating:
The cupcakes are terribly dry, crumbly, and as another reviewer put it -- mealy. The flavor itself is cocoa-rich and not too sweet, but the texture of the cake is truly awful -- a dry sponge. The frosting is very good, tho, so I'm twisting the cupcake tops off to eat them with the icing and tossing the bottoms.

User: Elizabeth from New York, NY    User Rating:
While the cupcakes were quite good, the peanut butter icing stole the show. Everyone asked for the recipe! Even using so much cocoa powder, I didn't think the chocolate flavor was really strong. The cupcakes were still delicious (much better than boxed!), but I was expecting a little more of a strong chocolate flavor. I might experiment in the future for a richer flavor. I also might ignore the chopped peanuts on top. While they looked nice, I didn't especially care for the added texture, especially since the icing was so incredibly smooth and creamy. I'll definitely be making this icing again often!

these are SO GOOD! love the combination of p.b. and chocolate! they are so moist and the icing is to die for!! made some changes- personal preferance and lack of supplies. didn't have x-large eggs, so used 2 whole large eggs and 1 egg white. liked someone's idea to use choc. syrup instead of coffee but #1 ing. listed is high fructose corn syrup, so used sugar free hot fudge ice cream topping instead. didn't have heavy cream so used lowfat milk for the icing. it made 24 cupcakes as previously stated and only took 15 min to bake- watch carefully and don't over-bake!

I loved the icing, and so did my girlfriend. But the cupcakes themselves were on the dry and unsatisfactory side. Another reviewer previously made a comment about liking a 'bigger crumb' which I read prior to making the recipe, I and thought it was an odd comment. But now that I've made the recipe I agree. The cupcakes just kind of crumble away to nothing. Overall BIG stars for the icing, no stars for the cupcakes.

Perfect for kids and adults. The classic combo of chocolate and peanut butter come together happily with this recipe. The cupcakes are extremely chocolatey and moist. I didn't have time to make both the cake recipe and the icing, so I used this peanut butter icing with a Duncan Hines dark chocolate mix. YUMMY - High Altitude conversion

User: P from Superior, CO    User Rating:
I halved this recipe and my son and I devoured these. We live in the Metro Denver Area (mile high!) so I made the following adjustments: for half a recipe: 1 cup flour, same number of Tablespoons of coffee (2). Baked in convection oven at 350 degrees for 18 minutes. My cupcakes weren't as big as Ina's (didn't have the same ice cream scoop). I got 12. Half a recipe of the icing was perfect for this number. Yes, this is a more dense cupcake, but it wasn't dry. Wonderful rich chocolate flavor--better than a mix. I like that she doesn't go overboard on the sugar. Other than my high altitude conversion, I wouldn't change a thing. Wonderful and satisfying!

I finally made these cupcakes last night and I liked them but I didn?t exactly get rave reviews. I was told by everyone that ?they didn?t feel the frosting.? Even though this wasn?t my recipe, I took great offence. One of my friends said they thought the icing was pure peanut butter. I think I did add a little too much cream, and the frosting was a little runny. I was also told that the cake part was not sweet enough. It was hard work and a labor of love but I hate when friends don?t rave as much as I like! I will make the ?cake? part again but I will try a different frosting. I also think instead of half and half sugars I will make it with all white sugar. Thanks anyway Ina, most of your stuff is really good! I also have to add, the cake part was moist and light, to get that result, you need to just mix it?not over mix it!

Rich chocolate flavor but not too sweet. Make sure NOT to use all natural peanut butter for the frosting--it does not get nearly as fluffy as regular peanut butter. The frosting is absolutely amazing! I used a devil's food chocolate cake mix and the combo was divine. The icing was enough for a 9" 2 layer cake. The prep time was cut down to 10 minutes!! I'm not going to bother making any other frosting again. Next time I will try adding peanut butter cup crumbles to the top.

These were great! Did some in paper cups and had some batter left over so also used a few silcone baking cups. Don't use the silicone - the cupcakes would not come out and we had to eat them with a spoon! But the cake and frosting were yummy just the same! Be careful not to overfill, they do rise up qutie a bit and will overflow.

The cupcake texture is perfect, the icing is light & fluffy, but I think it needs more sugar. It tastes a little too bitter from the cocoa powder, but maybe that's because I used Hershey's. Ina--it would be great if you could tell us in your recipes what brand you use. I think it could have made the difference.

Although I did not make the cupcakes, I did use the icing recipe and it was phenomenal. I used it to top cupcakes made with brownie mix (Paula Deen's idea) and they were very rich and moist! but the icing was by far the best part!

These cupcakes taste fabulous, I blame it all on the icing. This is by far the best peanut butter icing I have ever had or made; however, the cupcakes were quite crumbly and a bit dry. I am going to make them again and hopefully it was a slight error on my part. They tasted great, not to sweet (the cupcake), but just a bit to dry.

I really loved both the cupcakes and the frosting, especially the frosting. I love Ina's coconut cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and I was expecting the same cupcake to frosting ratio as that recipe. However, with the peanut butter frosting, I didn't think there was as much as with the cream cheese frostiing. Since I LOVED the peanut butter frosting, I'm going to 1 and a 1/2 the frosting next time so that I have more.

After reading the reviews, I decided to change the recipe a little so I would not make the same mistakes.....I substituted both sugars from 2/3 cup to 1 cup each....the buttermilk I substituted from 1 cup to 1 1/4 cups and I decreased the cocoa powder to 3/4. They turned out really good....the only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because I did change the recipe. Try them - you will like them.

This a very easy recipe to follow and the results are amazing. The coffee really does bring out the taste of chocolate and the peanut butter frosting is light and provides a terrific complement to the moist chocolate cupcakes. I did opt to use chopped peanuts and the chrunchy texture is a nice finish to the smooth frosting and moist cupcakes. I made them for my husband's birthday yesterday and he e-mailed me this morning to say he can't wait to have another one. I will definitely make this recipe again.

I've made quite a few of Barefoot Contessa's desserts and have never been disappointed. I made this today for my son's birthday and it was a hit! But instead of making the cake into cupcakes he asked for a sheet cake, so I baked it in a 9X13 baking dish for 35 minutes and it came out perfect. The cake has a delicious chocolate flavor, I think the coffee really does bring out the chocolate flavor, and it's very moist. The peanut butter icing tops it perfectly. It is sophisticated enough for adults, yet makes you feel like a kid when you taste it! Great recipe! Thank you Ms. Garten.

User: Kim from Sebring, FL    User Rating:
After following the recipe exactly, I found that the texture of these cupcakes was a bit to "mealy". I prefer a more dense crumb. These were more like a boxed cupcake mix. Ina's recipes are usually so good - I was upset to find that this one did not live up to her normal standards.

This is a terrific basic recipe for chocolate cupcakes: flavorful, light, with a very nice texture. The icing was another story. I think Larry Hayden's (former pastry chef at Union Square Cafe and Barefoot Contessa)chocolate buttercream, or Ina's butter/creamcheese frosting, would be better choices.

The cupcakes were very good-clearly better than a mix because of the intense chocolate flavor (the coffee bumps it up). My family really liked them but since chocolate/peanut butter is my main food group I think I may have expected too much. The cake was dense and the frosting fluffy-maybe the frosting would've been better in the center and frosted w/ chocolate frosting.

I made these cupcakes, along with Ina's flower cupcakes, for a birthday party this past weekend. They were wonderful! I did not make the peanut butter frosting for them; using instead Ina's cream cheese/butter frosting. It worked really well with both kinds of cupcakes. I followed the recipe as it was written and it made 24 cupcakes. They were moist, deliciously fudgy, without being too much, and everyone loved them! Most people at the party ate 2 cupcakes. 1 person even ate 4! The batter is thicker than "normal" cake batter, which made it so easy to put into the cupcake paper lined muffin tins. Using the ice cream scoop for portioning worked great. All the cupcakes were the same size. I am someone who prefers to make things from scratch and appreciates a good "homemade" recipe, rather than a dressed up boxed mix. I have had great success with all of Ina's recipes that I have tried. These chocolate cupcakes, as well as the flower cupcakes (which are like a yellow cake) are my new go-to recipes for cakes/cupcakes. We are expecting company again next weekend, and I will be making the chocolate cupcakes again, this time with the peanut butter frosting. Can't hardly wait to try them! Chocolate and peanut butter are my fave flavor combo! Keep up the good work, Ina!

These cupcakes are wonderful..and the Icing is FANTASTIC!!!!!! The recipe actually makes 18-19 cupcakes (not the 13-14 the recipe states). Also, I added the dry ingredients all at the same time, then the wet ingredients (like Ina did on the TV show). It worked great. As easy as the recipe is, you will never be tempted to open another box-cake again. Great reviews from the family!
