I made this cake last night and made a few changes, in the caramel i only put sugar, water & vanilla and poured it over the peaches in the pan -I added yellow corn meal instead of grits and added a tsp of cinnamon and a tsp of vanilla into the batter it was great.

Serendipitously, I ended up with a great cake. At he last moment I had to improvise and the result was great. First of all, I used Quaker Instant Grits and I did not encounter the "grittiness". I also used half the amount of called for grits. The vanilla is a nice touch. I used non-stick spray on the pan and on the parchment paper and had no problems. I also used whole Allspice and this added flavor. I prefer to start by mixing the sugar and butter, then adding the eggs one at a time, and then the sour cream and vanilla. I also combine and sift the dry ingredients (other than the sugar) and then add this mixture into the combined wet ingredients. The baking time was 45 minutes. The wetness of the cake may vary according to the number and size of eggs you use. If they are jumbo eggs, one might do. Like I said, it is a great recipe but needs tinkering with. That's the fun part!

Not Good!

The recipe wasn't too difficult however, it turned out just NASTY! The grits make it taste wierd and the caramel with the peaches made the peaches taste rotten almost. While, I have found many many great recipes on this website and on the network, I will not try this recipe again.

Pretty, but pass

Grits made the cake horrible. I think my oven cooked the cake too quick and made the caramel have a burnt taste.

grits?????

The flavor of this cake is awesome, if you can get past the crunchy uncooked grits! Who eats raw grits in cake??? not me!! If, I attempt this cake again it will be gritless or maybe try cooking the grits first.

Just say NO to the Grits!

I made this dessert for Labor Day last weekend. If I was to make this again I would skip adding the grits and just add a little more flour. To me the grits took away from the dessert as a whole. I also decided to take the skins off the peaches. Other than than not liking the grits the recipe turned out great!

Forget the Grits!

This recipe looks delicious but...though the cake tasted good the hardness of the grits was very unpleasant. I will not make this again.

Wonderful summer dessert!

I don't understand all the negative reviews. I've made this three times now and each time its gotten rave reviews. It's come out of the pan perfectly each time, leaving the peach skins on makes it a cinch to make up quickly - and mine were perfectly able to be cut with a fork. It's meant to be a not so sweet, slightly crunchy, rustic summer dessert. The only change I made was a little vanilla to the cake batter.

Again with the grits. . .

I prefer a softer texture for cake. Next time I will leave out the grits and just add a bit more flour. The cake turned out beautifully, and the peach and caramel flavor was delightful.

More baking time

This cake was fun to make. I baked it for 45 minutes, waited 20 minutes, it unmolded beautifully, the caramel melted onto the peaches, but the whole middle section was UNBAKED! Even though my toothpick came out clean (figure that one out!), it would have needed at least 20 more minutes of baking. It was as pictured, the taste of the peaches and cake were heavenly -- I also would peel the peaches, unattractive "hanging peelings" not good. I will try it again.

Great Grits

This cake is amazing! I've made it several times and every time it was completely devoured by my guests. I love the way the texture of the grits plays off the juicy peaches. The last time I made it, I was out of grits so I substituted white cornemal to great success. It had a finer texture, which is a perfect substitution for anyone who doesn't have the breeding to appreciate grits!

so bad dogs & squirrels won't eat it

I was TOTALLY embarrassed with this cake - which I made twice. I know how to bake; I gave 1 to my guy to give his Mom BEFORE I ate any of the other one. The grits make a disgusting texture; 43 minutes was not enough- it fell apart when trying to invert; had to put it back & back an add'l 20 min. Her dog & my squirrels won't even eat it!!! Delete this recipe-it's definitely not up to your standards!!

Just peachy!

Fortunately I read the reviews before I made this dessert, and I took to heart the words about the grits being too crunchy. I used just 1/8 cup of the grits and used cornmeal for the rest. This dessert was as tasty as it was beautiful! I served it with an amaretto whipped cream for those who wished to be really decadent. I will make it again and again, and would definitely recommend it to others!

Not again.........

I will not use this recipe again. The cake lacked flavor, the carmel stuck to the parchment and the over all outcome was not he best. However, it did look just like the picture.

I liked the peach/caramel layer lots and the cake was good but I will probably either try cornmeal or ground almonds in place of the grits next time. I found the grits just a little too crunchy; It was much easier than I expected and looked as pretty as the one in the picture.

Bakes up as advertised

I had fun putting this together, and the peaches are so delicious right now. The grits were a little "gritty," and the skin-on peaches made it hard to cut with your fork. I like the almond meal idea. It IS delicious for breakfast the next morning!

Very Good, I added 1tsp of vanilla and 1/2 tsp of almond oil. Will try adding ground amond meal. Texture is like a polenta pound cake. Very light and refreshing for the summer.
